Instruction S1 Manual (EMC, LVD)

S1 The S1 is the result of over 30 years experience in stage sound technology. The design brief was simple, build the best vocal mic in the world! How do you achieve that? Well, you need to have a sound quality that is equal to the finest studio microphones; we know how to do that! That s great, but for live use the microphone must not suffer from feedback, handling or plosive noise. It must also have a tailored response that takes into consideration the proximity effect. What else? It must be able to take the knocks and bumps of the road! The S1 does it all, and in my opinion, is the best-looking vocal mic around! I am so confident in this microphone that I am backing it with a full 5-year guarantee. While using the S1 is quite simple, and there are not many things you need to learn, please take the trouble to read this manual, there are some basic tips that will ensure you get the very best performance from your microphone. Peter Freedman Rode Microphones Sydney Australia

Usage Guidelines While some of you will be seasoned audio pros, I still recommend everyone read the following before you start! The S1 is a Phantom powered microphone. It will not work unless you have a 48V phantom supply. This will either come from the mixing console, PA head or you can purchase a separate supply. You will need a good quality low loss microphone cable. Spend the money on a good one; it will pay off in the long run. Keep it as short as practical for your stage set up. When using stage monitors, set them up as per Figure 1. This will direct the sound to your ears and towards the least responsive part of the S1 s pick up pattern. While P.A set up is well beyond this manual, if you want to get the best sound possible with the least problems, I can recommend a book by the Oz Audio legend, Duncan Fry. His book is called Live Sound Mixing. Fig. 1 A quick no feedback tip, never put your hands over the ball head. It may look cool, but it changes the pick-up area of the mic, and can cause feedback (see Figure 2)! Don t point the front of mic at the speakers either! While the S1 has been designed to be taken on the road, it is a precision device and should be treated accordingly. Remember, condenser microphones do not like moisture. Fig. 2 I would recommend wiping it down after use, and keep the absorbent crystals that are supplied with your S1, in the zip pouch with the mic. They absorb moisture and can be used many times by simply drying them out in the oven. When the crystals have turned pink, its time to dry them out again.

Usage Guidelines con t The ball head of the S1 is an engineering marvel. Made up of five separate mesh screens the outer is heat-treated steel, which has been bead-blasted and nickel-plated. Internally we have stainless steel meshes as well as a final nylon mesh. These filters are design to remove vocal plosives, while not affecting the frequency response. The mesh head can be unscrewed and washed in soap and water. Please fully dry the head before re assembly and be sure to take care with the mic once the head has been removed. We hope the information we have provided helps you get the best from your microphone.
