ç è Contrasts & Contradictions When you are reading and a character says or does something that is opposite (contradicts) what he/she has been doing all along, or a character responds in a way you would not expect, stop and ask Why is the Character DOing That? The answer to this question can help you make a prediction or an inference about the PLOT or the CONFLICT of the story. A character has a change in attitude or behavior. A character is different from the beginning of the story than at the end. * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Contrasts & Contradictions..*

Again & Again When you are reading and you notice a word, phrase, object, or situation happening over and over, stop and ask Why DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING AGAIN & AGAIN? The answer to this question can tell you about a THEME or CONFLICT or it might foreshadow what will happen later in the story. A situation occurs repeatedly. A character repeats the same word, phrase, or action. * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Again & Again Moments..*

? Tough Question When you are reading and a character asks himself/ herself or another character a very difficult question, stop and ask What DOES THIS Make me wonder about? The questions you generate can tell you about a CONFLICT or it might foreshadow what will happen later in the story.. This is not a simple question but a deep question about life or a struggle. The question does not have to come from the main character only. * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Tough Questions..*

! Aha Moment When you are reading and suddenly a character realizes, understands, or finally figures something out, stop and ask HOW MIGHT THIS CHANGE THINGS? If the character figured out a problem, you probably just figured out the CONFLICT. If the character understood a life lesson, you probably just learned a THEME. Suddenly Then I knew It came to me I realized * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Aha Moments.*

Memory Moment When you are reading and the author interrupts the action to share a memory or a flashback, stop and ask Why MIGHT THIS Memory be important? The answers to this question can tell you about a THEME or a CONFLICT or it might foreshadow what will happen later in the story. Thinking back... I remember... A character tells an old story from their past * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Memory Moments..*

J Words of the Wiser When you are reading and a character (who may be older and wiser) shares serious advice with another character, stop and ask What is the life lesson & how might it affect the character? Whatever the lesson is, you ve probably just discovered a THEME of the story.. Look for a character sharing advice Keep in mind that sometimes the wiser character isn t always the older one! * These are just some clues you may find in your reading to help you recognize Words of the Wiser..*
