BINDING CUTTING BASE This tool is designed to fit on a Porter Cable Model 310 and 3701 trim router, this combination will provide you with an easy way to accurately cut a binding rabbet on you instrument. Once the height is set the depth of the cut can be adjusted quickly. The two ball bearings on the handle keep the base snug to the sides of the instrument while the rub plate keeps the cutting bit perpendicular to the top or bottom. The rub plate is machined to a slight angle to accommodate curved top and bottom of the instrument. 1. ALWAYS wear safety glasses or a face shield. 2. DO NOT wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, or jewelry. Wear protective cover on hair and prevent contact with moving tool. These items can get caught in tool during operation and pull operator into moving part. 3. KEEP children away. 4. KEEP visitors at a safe distance. 5. WEAR a dust mask all times. 6. ALWAYS turn off motor before making any adjustments. S A F T E Y W A R N I N G 7. NEVER leave running tool unattended. 8. ALWAYS make sure all screws are tight and any hardware is removed from or near tool before starting. 9. SECURE all work pieces before starting. 10. ALWAYS keep cutters bit sharp. 11. ALWAYS keep work area clean. 12. DO NOT operate tool if under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 1

S E T U P 1 2 3 4 Remove the screws and plastic base from the Router Model 7301 Model 310 Loosen the four Allen head screws with the 9/64 Allen wrench provided Remove the two Allen screws with the 7/64 Allen wrench provided Remove handle from Base 2

S E T U P ( C o n t i n u e d ) 5 6 7 8 Place a 1/4 inch round dowel into the router collet Remove Rub plate from base Model 310 Model 7301 Mount the Rub plate back onto the base and loosely tighten the Allen screws Place Base on router and line up the three or four screw holes 3

S E T U P ( C o n t i n u e d ) 9 10 11 12 Model 310 Remove the 1/4 inch dowel pin and Rub plate, re-insert all the screws and tighten. Mount screw onto base and tighten. Make sure that the 1/4 inch dowel is seated as far forward as possible. At this point insert the 1/4 inch down-cutting router bit and tighten collet. Also make sure the bit does not stick out more than 1/8 of an inch. Model 3701 Place the Rub plate back onto the base, re-insert the Allen screws and tighten 4

S E T U P ( C o n t i n u e d ) 13 The adjustment knob is one of the key features of this tool, each turn of the knob will move the whole handle 1/32 of an inch exposing more of the router bit. The handle is designed to fit a little loose on the internal dovetail, this is to keep a smooth handle movement. After the adjustment has been made the locking thumb screw will lock the handle in place and onto the internal dovetail keep the handle and base ridged. 3/32 Slide the Handle forward until it hits the Rub plate and tighten the four Allen screws. The Router is now ready for use O P E R A T I O N Locking thumb screw Adjustment Knob There is approximately 3/32 of an inch ledge that the whole router rests on. This is to minimize any rise in height due to the curvature of the top or bottom of the instrument. The shoe that surrounds the router bit is designed to keep the bit form gouging the wood if the router gets bumped during a fresh cut. The maximum width and depth the bit can stick out is 3/8 of an inch. It is also recommended that you use a 1/4 inch spiral down cutting router bit, this will give you a clean cut. Care should be taken not to tip router forward during placement onto the guitar body, always keep both bearings on side of the guitar. 5

O P E R A T I O N ( C o n t i n u e d ) 90 90 When moving the router over the entire instrument, make sure that the handle moves perpendicular to the sides maintaining light even pressure to the handle so that both bearings always touch the surface at all times. It is also important that the instrument is clamped securely to your work bench while routing out the wood for the bindings. You will be able to know when the cutting is complete by simply listening to the router bit, there is a difference in cutting sound and just running sound. Always use both hands when routing. It is also recommended to move the router from bout to waist as show this will avoid tear out. Care should be taken when routing in the waist area, always take small cuts, move from one side to the other until the entire waist has been cut. 6

O P E R A T I O N ( C o n t i n u e d ) To place the router onto the guitar hold the router at an angle as shown, place the lower bearing on the side, lower the router until the rub plate touches the top, then rotate toward guitar until the top bearing touches. Always make sure both bearings are touching the guitar. At this point reposition hand that is holding onto the router. To take the router off the guitar just reverse the procedure. M A I N T A N A N C E There is very little maintenance required, the only requirement is to frequently blow out the area near the router bit with a air supply. Periodically check the rub plate and the shoe, should the wear be too extensive replace. L u t h i e r T O O L Company The Art of Building a Better Instrument One hand should be holding the binding base handle as shown, the other hand should hold the router base and at the same time rest on the guitar, this will also give control of the router tipping inward. Do not hold router at the top. Then move the router as indicated previously from bout to waist in a smooth motion always keeping both bearings on the side of the guitar and hold the handle perpendicular to the side. 7
