Page 5 Minutes of Monthly Meeting June 6, 2011 President Virginia McGrane called the meeting to order. Forty-four members were present at the June meeting along with visitors, Billy Stilley and Janice Cates. Brochures and registration forms for the Fall Retreat set for October 20 th through October 23 rd were given out. Nine persons had signed up for the Gayle Wallace Class at the beginning of the June monthly meeting. Based on a financial concern, Sarah McCormick made the motion to cancel the classes. Billie Thomas seconded the motion. After much discussion a vote was called. The result was as follows: 24 votes against cancelling the classes, 4 votes for cancelling the classes, and 13 neutral votes. The classes will take place. Virginia told guild members that on Friday, Gayle will present a trunk show. A boxed supper will be served for $6.00 per person. Virginia thanked those members who sold raffle tickets for the Brandon Raffle Quilt at the MQA June Gathering. Since the funds from the sale of raffle tickets is a large part to the guild s means to raise money for classes and retreats, It was pointed out that the guild needs to work harder on sales of raffle tickets. Lucy Large, treasurer, presented the following financial report: Beginning Balance $4,958.64 Expenses Nita Stone - 64.15 for plant Cindy Barnett - 22.52 for printing & postage Sarah McCormick - 131.28 for website Deposit dues quilt challenge + 110.00 Month End Balance $4,850.69 Virginia stated that she had talked to the Salvation Army and asked what the needs were of the resent tornado victims of Smithville, Mississippi. She reported to the guild that anything considered a necessity was needed, including paper towels, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, etc. Ann Fox contacted a quilter in Tupelo who told of a boy in Smithville with needs. Nita Stone has gotten in touch with a church in Smithvile which reports that they lost everything and are in need of quilts for their baby s area. Also the pastor reported that there is a need for any size quilt since everybody in Smithville has just about lost everything. Nita and Betty Magee plan to take donated quilts to the church in Smithville as soon as they have received enough to carry with them. Someone has left a quilt at the library after the quilt showing. Virginia McGrane is keeping the quilt safe until the owner comes forward to claim it. Virginia reminded the guild that the President s challenge is due Friday, July 15 th. Gayle Wallace will judge the quilts entered Friday night and will present the awards Saturday, July 16 th. Virginia reminded the guild of the Greater Jackson Quilt Show. It was reported that not many quilts have been submitted. Virginia encouraged members to submit quilts for the show. Joan Alliston informed the guild of a new display of quilts made by ladies over the age of seventy. The next exhibit of quilts will be Christmas quilts followed by nine patch quilts in January. Prior to the meeting Virginia had placed four aqua tags under four chairs. When she announced to look under your seat, aqua tags were discovered by Debbie Williams, Cindy Barnett and Gayle Matlage who were awarded prizes. Billie Thompson gave a report on the MQA June Gathering. She stated that over 150 quilters attended the event. The membership of MQA is now over 400. Billie announced that the June Gathering for 2012 will be the first weekend in June, 2012. Billie also reminded the guild members of the MQA National teacher, Deb Karasik teaching Quilts with an Attitude. She will be teaching three classes one in Starkville, one in Jackson, and one in Hattiesburg. Each class will be limited to 20 quilters. After taking a survey from members present at the June meeting, Debbie Wilson announced that the June Sit-N-Sew would be cancelled. Marilyn Rose presented a program on quilt challenges. She showed some of her many challenge quilts. Her theme for quilt challenges was What If. Seven persons showed UFO quilts followed by thirteen persons showing show and tell projects. Door prizes were won by Ruth Pullen and Billie Thompson. Betty Sutton won the fat quarter drawing. She chose turquoise and yellow for July s fat quarters. There being no further business, the meeting was closed. Respectfully submitted, Cindy Barnett
