ABOUT SSB 1. What is Strawberry Smart Bench (SSB)? SSB is a next generation of street furniture, powered by solar energy, that offers new, modern utilities of public interest, like power and connectivity on public spaces for people. It is a smart solar social hub, created to meet the needs of the 21st century mobile generation by providing energy, connectivity and relevant local information on the go. 2. What does SSB do? SSB provides people with following functions: Portable devices charging via built in cables, usb ports and wireless pads. People can charge their phones, tablets, cameras and different types of wearable devices (such as smart watches, Google Glasses, etc.) 24/7 using only clean energy directly from the sun Environmental sensing - Using environmental sensors, it collects data such as CO2 level, noise level, humidity, pressure and temperature and sends it to the cloud platform. People can get these information via Strawberry mobile app, while borough official can reach it via Strawberry dashboard that is available 24/7. WiFi - People can use free WiFi in a near proximity of each SSB. Relevant local information with accompanying free smartphone app 3. How much does it cost to use SSB? All of SSB s features and services are 100% free! People can use the Wi-Fi, charge their portable devices, check environmental data at no charge. 4.Does SSB require any connection to the ground (hardwiring)? SSB is completely autonomous from the grid, 100% solar powered, and does not require additional source of energy, therefore it does not have to be connected to the ground. 5. Can SSB work during night and cloudy weather? SSB is designed to store power in highly efficient batteries, allowing it to work at night and when it s raining or snowing. 6. Does it require connections to the Wi-Fi network? No, SSB does not require additional connection to WiFi network. SSB NETWORK 1. What is SSB network? We provide city-wide network of SSBs at no expense to cities or citizens, but through already proven sponsorship model (eg. branded cycle hire scheme in the cities, like Santander Bikes in London). We install infrastructure, and provide 24/7 maintenance, while renting simple branding space to sponsors (brands) on the annual basis to cover the costs of the infrastructure and maintenance. This model stand out from similar ones for its social character; high attention, engagement and retention of users both in the outdoor and digital world, as well as sensor network data Our smart street furniture makes greater community feeling in public spaces, as users are motivated to socialize and spend more time outdoors. Fact that you have something in common makes people more open and more comfortable to start meeting new people. Our modern street furniture adds a smart face
to any public space, showing city orientation toward smart and green goals. Our mission is to make a network of smart benches in a city, so citizens can have direct use of this data. They would be able to see where are the healthiest conditions for training outside, while the city officials could set actions and policies based on this data to improve the quality of urban living for citizens. Beside interconnected SSBs into network, there are two more aspects of this project - mobile app for end-users and cloud based dashboard for Borough officials and Sponsor. The purpose of mobile app is to enable people to find the nearest SSB around them and to notify them about percentage of their battery level. Also there is potential in measuring great potential of users impact on the environment and to interact with Strawberry device and its modules. On the other hand, cloud-based dashboard has dual purpose - monitoring the usage of SSBs and maintenance of all connected SSBs by Strawberry energy; access to collected data from sensors for borough. Also, beside general information on each profile of SSB benches included in SSB network project, there is an active DONATE button that leads to official CRUK web site and page with instructions for donating money. 2. How is SSB network funded? SSB generates its own revenue through sponsorships and partnerships from private sector, ensuring that SSB will come at no cost to users or taxpayers and will be well maintained. In return for provided sponsorship, sponsor is granted with right to brand SSB, and according to rules defined in contract between Strawberry energy and borough. 3. Does SSB network cost anything to borough? No, SSB network comes completely free to boroughs. 4. Does SSB imply any additional costs in the future for borough? No. Any additional costs that might arise in the future are and will be covered by SSB or sponsor. 5: Who owns and maintains SSB network after installation? SSB network is completely maintained and owned by Strawberry energy, and sponsor is granted with a licence to brand it for a certain amount of time, set out contract between Strawberry energy and Sponsor. Sponsor is not an owner of SSB network, but can use it for its own promotional activities during that period. 6. Who can be a sponsor of SSB network? Sponsor of SSB network is chosen in accordance with terms and conditions set out in contract between Strawberry energy and borough. 7. Will there be test period / pilot? Five SSBs will be installed on each participating borough as part of a pilot project for a trial period of one month. This test period will be used to showcase all benefits and functions of the SSB, to collect feedback from borough officials and borough residents, as well as data about usage of SSB, in order to improve network performances, and make it more convenient for people. After the trial project we would deploy more benches (approx 20) with the new design tailored to the pilot review. 8. What happens after the end of the agreement between Strawberry energy and borough? Strawberry energy will remove all the SSBs from locations at no cost to boroughs. Other option would include purchase of all installed SSBs by borough.
TEAM AND MISSION 1. Who is the team behind SSB? Strawberry energy is developing solar powered urban furniture for smart and sustainable cities. For the last five years they have been developing smart city solutions that improve the built environment, enhance people s experience in public spaces and make for more sustainable, safer and thriving places. Strawberry energy is present in eight countries across Europe and in the US. Their solar urban devices are deployed in 8 countries across Europe (16 cities so far) and have reached more than 500,000 users. What is Strawberry energy motivation for bringing SSB network in public spaces? Strawberry energy exists with a purpose to enhance the smartness of public spaces across the world, by changing obsolete street furniture. That way they strive to improve urban living and make cities smarter, greener and more convenient for 21st century generation. We observe our cities, its structures and facilities in terms of progressive reusing, remixing and adding values. Urban technologies will certainly remodel our benches into places for sitting and socializing, but also places with hyper-local environmental information collected via sensors, free-battery charging point, place to catch free WiFi and many more. We saw opportunity in retrofitting existing infrastructure. That is why we have created Strawberry Smart Bench. PRIVACY, SECURITY AND SAFETY 1. Can someone hack user's phone while charging at SSB? Our chargers are like wall chargers, in that they give only power. The USB cables on Strawberry smart products include wires for power only and cannot carry data. 2. What kind of data is collected? As the network it will collect and provide environmental data on the hyper local level. In its everyday operation, SSB will generate data from its usage, solar energy production and consumption and from environmental sensors. 3. Can collected data can be re-used? General public will have access to real time data collected from sensors through free mobile app, while city officials will have access to the more advanced free cloud dashboard where they will be able to access more detailed data with graphs and basic analytics.
4. Can SSB be moved or stolen by anyone? No. SSB is bolted to the ground (like ordinary bench) therefore can not be stolen. Also, having in mind that the benches are going to be outside all the time, and open to vandalism, they are created to be difficult to steal and vandalise, while at the same time beautifully human-centric designed. 5. What is your experience with vandalism so far? So far, we had minor problems just with ripping the charging cables. STRAWBERRY SSB SUPPORT 1. Is there someone a borough can contact if they notice SSB stopped working, or it s damaged, or any similar problem that occurs? Strawberry energy will designate a project manager that will be responsible for coordinating the whole SSB network project, who will always be available for any questions, complaints or suggestions during the term of the project.
