a modern engineering graduate requires Foundations: understanding of fundamental science and engineering of permanent value; Breadth: familiarity with many important areas, including for our students Depth: ability to deal with specialists, or become one if necessary; Leadership: judgment and appreciation of the "bigger picture;" Design: experience with creative, synthetic, integrative activities; Curiosity: desire and ability to keep learning throughout life; Communications skills: ability to express ideas persuasively, in written and oral form; Social skills: ability to interact with others, in professional and social settings; Global view: appreciation of diversity in the world and in intellectual areas; Personal strength: ability to cope with life's various difficulties.
Among the factors that provide compelling Reasons for reexamination are the growing complexity and interdisciplinary foundations of engineered systems, the rapid emergence of new technologies, the blurring of boundaries among technical disciplines, globalization as a principal driving force for change, accompanied by increasing global competition, the convergence of biology and engineering, declining financial support for state colleges and universities and corresponding emphasis on limiting baccalaureate-level programs to four years, and prospective students interests that go well beyond perceived boundaries associated with engineering disciplines traditional roles.
Shortcomings of existing education models Over-emphasis on analysis Little hands-on experience Disconnected from real-world problems Uninteresting labs Little or no exposure to latest technologies Little focus on communication skills 28 October 2009 IIT Rajasthan 6
Initial Conditions Strengths: o Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics o Know how to survive under pressure o Good grasp of problem-solving skills o Excellent potential Weaknesses: o Poor language skills o Limited knowledge of society and technology o Little focus on original thinking and creativity 28 October 2009 IIT Rajasthan 7
Final conditions We want our students to have: Qualities of compassion and consideration A habit of excellence Ability to understand the global picture Multi-dimensional thinking skills: Systems approach Good interpersonal skills Good understanding of societal needs (national and international) and sensitivity to environment Ability to provide practical solutions 28 October 2009 IIT Rajasthan 8

Indian Institutes of Technology, one of the premier brands in technical education world-wide, and the best in India IIT Rajasthan is a newly established institution and we have an opportunity at this time to bring in best practices from across the world as we set up this new institute. Our attempt will be to set up new and innovative models of education We would also like to promote creativity and entrepreneurship as part of education. To start with, a 4-year B.Tech. programme is offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Currently operating from IIT Kanpur campus. Two batches of students already admitted
