Students will recognize tools needed for installation and their uses 1

TOOLS NEEDED C B D A G E MATERIALS NEEDED A. Hammer E. Caulk Gun B. Tape Measure F. Screw Gun C. Level G. Chalk Line D. Utility Knife H. Hammer Tacker (not pictured) F A B D C A. Caulking C. Roofing Nails B. Wood Shims D. 16d Galvanized Nails E. 3½" screws (not pictured) 2

A B A. Rough opening for a window B. Rough opening for a door Windows and doors are normally sized ½" 1" smaller than the opening in the framing to allow for leveling and squaring adjustments and for insulation around the unit. If the window or door has a larger gap than this during the test fit, either the opening must be made smaller with lumber or a different window/door unit must be used. When framing for a door you will generally add 2" to the width of your door, and make your rough opening that size. For instance, if you are using a 36" door your rough opening will be 38". Windows, on the other hand, are sized differently. A 48" window will require a 48" rough opening, but the actual measurement of the window is 47½". 3

FLASHING AROUND DOOR OPENINGS AND INSTALLING AN EXTERIOR DOOR It is important to create a drainage plane that will direct any water to the outside of the siding, flashing, and/or housewrap. A general rule to accomplish this is to always start at the bottom. 1. Install foam Confirm that the 1" rigid foam has been installed prior to installing exterior doors. 2. Remove Packing Make sure to remove any wood strips under the threshold and remove temporary fasteners that hold the door shut prior to placing the unit into the rough opening. 3. Test fit the door to make sure it fits in the opening and will open and close. Confirm that the door jamb is the proper width to accommodate the 1" rigid foam. 4. Caulk Apply a single bead of silicone caulk around the top and sides of the opening, and a double bead on top of the floor where the door threshold will sit. 5. Set Door Place the door in the opening trying not to smear the caulk. Set the door tight to the hinge side, and make sure the door is square by checking alignment of the lockset holes and by checking the gap between the door and frame for evenness. Shim behind the hinges and attach with screws through one of the hinge holes. 6. Shim Add wood shims where needed around the perimeter of the door. 7. Fasten Door Using 2½" screws fasten the door to the framing, making sure to shim where necessary and pushing the door tight to the sheathing. 8. Check Operation Open and close the door to ensure proper alignment 9. Install metal flashing above door You should now install a piece of metal flashing above the door, adhering it to the rigid foam with the Dow Weathermate tape. 4

STEPS TO INSTALLING A WINDOW UNIT 1. Check the window sill to insure that it is level and has no bumps or dips. Check the rough opening for square by measuring the opening diagonally. 2. Install the rigid sill pan Install WEATHERMATE Sill Pan along sill of rough opening Left and right piece of sill pan must have a 2 minimum overlap 3. Fasten and flash sill pan Nail or staple sill pan once on each half at the X Seal overlap seam with 4 WEATHERMATE Straight Flashing 4. Flash window opening Apply 4 WEATHERMATE Straight Flashing at the sides of the window opening 5. Test fit the window by setting it in the opening to make sure it fits. Ensure that you have the window oriented correctly. (Weep holes are at the bottom and lock is on the inside.) 5

6. Apply sealant / install window Apply sealant to backside of window flange if required by window manufacturer Tip: 3/8 bead must cover the flange nailing holes Install window according to manufacturer s recommendations Tip: Center the window in the rough opening to simplify foam sealing of interior perimeter 7. Check the operation of the window by raising and lowering the window sashes, and ensure the sash locks work freely. If the window is a slider, make sure the reveal matches when the window is almost closed. 8. Apply window flashing Apply 4 WEATHERMATE Straight Flashing over the side window flanges Apply 4 WEATHERMATE Straight Flashing over the top window flange and the drip cap (if applicable), extending past the side flashings 9. Tape head flashing Apply WEATHERMATE Construction Tape over the top edge of the straight flashing 6

MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS 1. Keep up the Finish Maintaining the paint or stain finish is one of the most important items for keeping the doors and windows looking good and working well. 2. Keep Locksets Tight If doorknobs become loose, simply tighten the two screws holding them in place. This is a common maintenance problem. 3. Adjust Door Threshold Check the door threshold for screw heads. If applicable, raise or lower the threshold using these screws for seasonal adjustment. 4. Adjust Storm Doors Adjust storm door closure per instructions on the closer so door will shut firmly without slamming. Adjust locks to hold door closed. Storm doors will not last if allowed to hang open and blow in the wind. 5. Moisture Issues Under normal conditions, the windows may have a small amount of moisture on the glass near the bottom of the sash. If this moisture is excessive, check to make sure the humidity level in your home is not too high. Make sure to open curtains and blinds during the day to allow drying time. Feel around windows for noticeable air leaks. If there is moisture between the glass, call to check warranty on the window. 7
