Graphic Designs Heritage Graphic Design - The art of conveying messages. Applied Art. W.A. Dwiggins (1880 1956) book designer that coined the term graphic design. Graphic sensibility fused with planning and organizing.

Early Examples Lascaux Cave Paintings.

Benjamin Franklin s political cartoon, 1754.

Graphic Design Categories The intent of design in to persuade, indentify, or inform. Food packaging rely on persuasion, identity, and information to sell to customers. A well thought out design is more likely to be purchased than the latter. Designer must bring graphic sensibility to final solution.

Corporate Design. Corporations use large, internal design departments, also hire independents, and devote large sums of money to graphic design projects. Goal = Brand their message into the minds of consumers.

Environmental Design. Creating a 3D experience for the visitor. Museum exhibits, trade shows, and convention booths.

Motion Design. Involves adding sound, motion, and time sequencing to pictures and words. Filmmaking, animation, and visual effects tell a story or articulate a concept.

Interaction Design. Designers use computers to create user experiences through Internet browsers and touch-screen devices. Prototouch is the first touch screen that recognizes pressure.

Type Design. Type designers create new letterforms and fonts to develop a complete typeface family. Letters, numbers, ligature (where two letters are joined), and punctuation.

Publication Design. Magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and other periodicals all fall within the umbrella of publication design. News, business, travel, retail, entertainment, and fashion.

Book Design. Book Publishers give the final, edited text to designers for layout. Designers must understand the content when making decisions about the font, headers, and other design elements. Style = Subject matter

Book Jacket Design. The success of a book may be dependent of the cover design. The cover relays a great deal of nonverbal information about the content. Designer must attract the buyers attention.

Signage Design. The main goal of signage is to help people find their way. Understanding of typography is essential. Must understand building plans, floor plans, construction, & exit procedures.

Brand & Identity Design. A company s success relies on a unique brand and logo. Burnt into the mind of the audience. Logo s differentiates one company from another. Create a comfort zone for the public by presenting a familiar and recognizable face.

Package Design. Must function three dimensionally and utilize texture as well as text and images. Government regulations, focus groups, and consumer feedback play integral roles in developing designs.

Information Design. Presentation of information and data is art as well as science. Data must be understandable and easy to use in a way that is effective, efficient, and attractive. Signs, computer interfaces, forms, maps, ect.

Collateral Design. Promotion that supports an identity service, or event. Brochures, mailers, catalogs, announcements, etc. Copywriting (composing words), photography, and illustrations (stylized drawings/painting).

Advertising Design. Designers fuse understandings of visual identity with campaign marketing strategies. Integrate type and image to strengthen advertising concepts. Strong marketing background helps.

This Years Focus Gaining an understanding of the elements of art & principals of design. Using Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop to create unique works of digital art. Using technologies such as digital cameras, scanners, printers, etc.
