Due to constant product improvements, the actual product appearance might differ from the shown images. Product images are for illustrative purposes only. Do not switch the device on immediately after it has been exposed to changes in temperature. Protect the device against damage by leaving it switched off until it has reached room temperature. Keep this manual for future reference. 4. What is Arduino Arduino is an open-source prototyping platform based in easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs light-on sensor, a finger on a button or a Twitter message and turn it into an output activating of a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so, you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino software IDE (based on Processing). Surf to www.arduino.cc and www.arduino.org for more information. Pin Layout The ESP8266-based serial WiFi shield has two LEDs. The red LED is for the power supply. The blue LED is a multi-functional LED with following functions: blinking 4 times continuously: data communication blinking 1 time every 0.5 s: configuration modes blinking 1 time every 1 s: connecting router in STA mode steady on: AP/STA working mode 7. Connection This shield allows you to operate an ESP8266 controller board through Arduino IDE, without any wire connection. Just plug this shield into the Arduino UNO/Mega board, upload the WiFi configuration code to start a WiFi host or hotpoint, and use the TCP/UDP Debugging software to monitor your data transmission. First, the hardware connection is very simple and does not need any wire connection. Just connect the shield to the board. V. 01 09/05/2017 3 Velleman nv

Then, connect the board to your computer and run the Arduino IDE. Also, install the ESP8266 package to your Arduino IDE. With the release of the Arduino 1.6.4, adding third party boards to the Arduino IDE is easily achieved through the board manager. If you are running an older version of the Arduino (1.6.3 or earlier), we recommend upgrading now. Download the latest version of Arduino from www.arduino.cc. Point the Arduino IDE board manager to a custom URL. Open Arduino, go to File > Preferences, and paste the following URL into the text box: http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json. Click OK to confirm. Next, go to Tools > Boards > Boards Manager and look for the esp8266. Click on that entry and install. V. 01 09/05/2017 4 Velleman nv

The board definitions and tools for the ESP8266 include a whole set of gcc, g++ and other reasonably large, compiled binaries so it may take a few minutes to download and install. After installing the ESP8266, run the included example to test. Now, choose the wifi test code. The example allows the wifi shield to connect to your local wifi. Change your local wifi name and password in the example code. V. 01 09/05/2017 5 Velleman nv

When uploading the code to the Arduino board, the connection between the Arduino RX/TX pin and the shield RX/TX pin must be off. This means you will need to turn off the switch (blue button on the shield) while uploading, and switch on again when uploading is finished. Now, check your local router and look for the unknown wifi shield. Your connection is successful. 8. Burning Software to the ESP8266 We need a flasher tool, preferably the NodeMCU flasher: https://gthub.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher Connect the hardware using a USB-TTL converter: 5V ======== 5V Gnd ======== Gnd RX ======== RX TX ======== TX V. 01 09/05/2017 6 Velleman nv

Next, run the NodeMCU flasher. Click the Config tab and select your software. V. 01 09/05/2017 7 Velleman nv

Go back to the Operation tab and click the Flash button. Press the KEY button. Next hold the RST button pressed for a few seconds. V. 01 09/05/2017 8 Velleman nv

The progress bar will start running. The firmware is installed successfully. Connect the shield to the Arduino UNO and connect to the computer. Run the Arduino IDE and install the ESP8266 package. Choose your notebook s wifi (default is DoitWiFi). V. 01 09/05/2017 9 Velleman nv

Open your browser and enter the IP address 192.168.4.1. Modify the wifi access point into your custom name. Save the configuration. After a few seconds, the shield will reboot and refresh the list of your notebook. V. 01 09/05/2017 10 Velleman nv

Connect your wifi. The notebook will receive the data from the shield through Arduino with a TCP debugger (TSCPUDPDbg recommended). Run the TCP/UDG debugger, click CreateConnn. V. 01 09/05/2017 11 Velleman nv

Enter the IP address 192.168.4.1 and port 9000, and click Create. Now, run the Arduino IDE. V. 01 09/05/2017 12 Velleman nv

Enter the following code: The message will be sent to your notebook. Now, run to the TCP/UDG debugger to see whether the notebook has received the data. Select the 192.168.4.1 connection and click Connect. You will see the message is received. V. 01 09/05/2017 13 Velleman nv

Velleman Service and Quality Warranty Since its foundation in 1972, Velleman acquired extensive experience in the electronics world and currently distributes its products in over 85 countries. All our products fulfil strict quality requirements and legal stipulations in the EU. In order to ensure the quality, our products regularly go through an extra quality check, both by an internal quality department and by specialized external organisations. If, all precautionary measures notwithstanding, problems should occur, please make appeal to our warranty (see guarantee conditions). General Warranty Conditions Concerning Consumer Products (for EU): All consumer products are subject to a 24-month warranty on production flaws and defective material as from the original date of purchase. Velleman can decide to replace an article with an equivalent article, or to refund the retail value totally or partially when the complaint is valid and a free repair or replacement of the article is impossible, or if the expenses are out of proportion. You will be delivered a replacing article or a refund at the value of 100% of the purchase price in case of a flaw occurred in the first year after the date of purchase and delivery, or a replacing article at 50% of the purchase price or a refund at the value of 50% of the retail value in case of a flaw occurred in the second year after the date of purchase and delivery. Not covered by warranty: - all direct or indirect damage caused after delivery to the article (e.g. by oxidation, shocks, falls, dust, dirt, humidity...), and by the article, as well as its contents (e.g. data loss), compensation for loss of profits; - consumable goods, parts or accessories that are subject to an aging process during normal use, such as batteries (rechargeable, non-rechargeable, built-in or replaceable), lamps, rubber parts, drive belts... (unlimited list); - flaws resulting from fire, water damage, lightning, accident, natural disaster, etc. ; - flaws caused deliberately, negligently or resulting from improper handling, negligent maintenance, abusive use or use contrary to the manufacturer s instructions; - damage caused by a commercial, professional or collective use of the article (the warranty validity will be reduced to six (6) months when the article is used professionally); - damage resulting from an inappropriate packing and shipping of the article; - all damage caused by modification, repair or alteration performed by a third party without written permission by Velleman. Articles to be repaired must be delivered to your Velleman dealer, solidly packed (preferably in the original packaging), and be completed with the original receipt of purchase and a clear flaw description. Hint: In order to save on cost and time, please reread the manual and check if the flaw is caused by obvious causes prior to presenting the article for repair. Note that returning a non-defective article can also involve handling costs. Repairs occurring after warranty expiration are subject to shipping costs. The above conditions are without prejudice to all commercial warranties. The above enumeration is subject to modification according to the article (see article s manual).
