Assembly instructions for swivel mechanical joints Bondstrand fiberglass pipe series Scope These instructions describe the proper procedures for the installation of Bondstrand Swivel mechanical joints. Swivel mechanical joint Introduction This guide provides recommendations for the installation of Bondstrand piping systems using the Swivel mechanical joint. Many of the skills, techniques and principles of steel pipe installation also apply to Glassfiber Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) piping. In general Bondstrand GRE piping weighs much less than steel and is more flexible, but it must be handled more carefully than uncoated and unlined carbon steel pipe. In addition GRE pipe often needs protection against abrasion at points of support. To accommodate the characteristics of GRE piping; the following installation recommendations should be followed. You are encouraged to contact NOV Fiber Glass Systems or your NOV Fiber Glass Systems representative for more help on specific problems or questions. Check the presence and quality of the joint material (O-rings) and equipment (photo 1). The tooling and joint material listed below are, as a minimum, required to make a Swivel joint. All items are available from NOV Fiber Glass Systems. Installation equipment like cranes are to be determined by installation contractor. Tooling 1. Lubricant 6. Torque wrench 2. Joint assembly Bring the pipes into position. The alignment of the pipes is important. Clean the grooves and sealing surface of the male and female pipe end, using a clean dry rag. Clean the O-rings with water or a clean rag. Check O-rings for damages and correct size. 2
Distribute the O-ring evenly in the groove by slipping a screwdriver under it and sliding the screwdriver around the joint. Be careful not to damage the O-ring. A sound O-ring is the key to a watertight joint. Lubricate the outside of the male end, and the inside of the female end. Motor oil or Teflon based lubricant can be used. Put the band clamps with the lugs into position, make sure there is some protection (e.g. rubber sheet) between the band clamp and the pipe surface. Apply the pullers to the lugs. 3
Pull the joint until no gap between both parts is left. Mount the split rings (half flange rings) to both ends of the joint. Make sure the adjacent pairs of split rings are rotated (approximately 60 degrees) relative to each other. Place the bolts and hand tighten all nuts. Bolt threads must be clean and lubricated to attain proper torque. Use lubricated washers under nuts to protect ring back face. Tighten all nuts following the sequence shown under tightening sequence. Before tightening, make sure the orientation of the connected fitting is correct. Do not succeed the torque increments given in Recommended bolt torques. After the bolts have been tightened to recommended torque, recheck the torque on each bolt in the same sequence, since previously tightened bolts may have relaxed. 4
