Summer 2017 Classes & Events Class Info & Policies Registration: You can register for classes at the shop, over the telephone (507-645- 1330), or at northfieldyarn.com/classes. Seating is limited, and we will not be able to accept registrations once a class has filled. Photos & Samples: You can see pictures of the items we ll make in class at northfieldyarn.com/classes. Samples of most items will also be on display in the shop. Supplies: When supplies are not included with a class, you can pick up a supply list when you register. We offer a 10% discount on class supplies purchased at Northfield Yarn. If you plan to purchase supplies on the day of class, please arrive early so you have time to make your selections before class begins. Changes & Cancelations: Some things come up that require changes to the schedule after it has been published. We will strive to keep online information as up-to-date as possible, but the most reliable way to get current information is to call the shop. If we have to cancel a class, we will let you know as soon as possible and refund any payment in full. If you cannot attend a class, you can get your money back in full if you give us seven days notice or if we are able to fill your spot from a waiting list. Don t See What You Were Hoping For? If you would like a private lesson on a topic not included in our class schedule, just contact the shop and we will be happy to set one up for you. Private lessons cost $25/hour for an individual (rates are adjusted for larger groups). We also welcome suggestions for classes to include in future guides. 1
Class Experience Levels Matching classes with your experience level: All introductory classes are intended for beginners with no prior experience. Other class descriptions indicate prerequisite skills, if any. Where terms such as Beginner or Intermediate are used, they follow the definitions below: Skill Levels for Knitting Beginner Easy Intermediate Experienced Projects for first-time knitters using basic knit and purl stitches. Minimal shaping. Projects using basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. Projects with a variety of stitches, such as basic cables and lace, simple intarsia, double-pointed needles, and knitting in the round. Mid-level shaping and finishing. Projects using advanced techniques and stitches, such as short rows, fair isle, more intricate intarsia, cables, lace patterns, and numerous color changes. Skill Levels for Crochet Beginner Easy Intermediate Experienced Projects for first-time crocheters using basic stitches. Minimal shaping. Projects using yarn with basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. Projects using a variety of techniques, such as basic lace patterns or color patterns, mid-level shaping and finishing. Projects with intricate stitch patterns, techniques and dimension, such as non-repeating patterns, multi-color techniques, fine threads, small hooks, detailed shaping and refined finishing. 2
Introductory Classes Unless otherwise noted, the following classes require no previous experience and include all tools and supplies. Intro to Crochet... $20 Instructor: Jody Ouradnik May Option: Sunday, May 21 from 2-3:30pm July Option: Saturday, July 15 from 2:30-4pm Learn a new skill or freshen up an old one! This class is intended for beginners with little or no experience with crochet, as well as knitters who would like to master some crochet skills to apply to knitting projects. Over the course of the 90-minute class, we will cover the basics of chaining, creating single crochet stitches, and working in rows. Fast Track Knit... $15* Instructor: Cynthia Gilbertson Saturday, July 8 from 12:30-2pm This 90-minute class is intended for beginners who have never knit before. It covers three skills in one session: casting on, the knit stitch, and binding off. These skills will get you started with the rewarding hobby of knitting. *$12 if taken together with Fast Track Purl. Fast Track Purl... $15* Instructor: Cynthia Gilbertson Saturday, July 15 from 12:30-2pm This 90-minute class is intended for beginners who know the knit stitch and want to expand their skills to the purl stitch and the possibilities that come from combining knit and purl stitches together. Bring a pair of US 7 or US 8 needles. Yarn will be provided. *$12 if taken together with Fast Track Knit. 3
Pin Loom Class Pin Loom Introduction: Mug Rug... $30 Instructor: Meg Stump Saturday, May 27, 1 4 pm This is an introductory pin loom weaving class. No previous weaving experience is needed! Learn to weave on a 2" pin loom and the 4" Zoom Loom. At the end of class, you will have made one or two mug rugs (coasters) embellished with a handwoven flower and bee to take home. Participants will learn to weave on a pin loom, construct a Loom Bloom flower and make a three-dimensional bee as well as gain an overview of the many uses for pin loom weaving. Weaving materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their choice of worsted weight or lighter yarn to weave if they choose. Christmas in July Avoid the time crunch this fall and get ready for Christmas with these fun project classes taught during the month of July! Knitted Christmas Stocking... $45 Instructor: Jean Christensen Saturdays, July 8, 22 & 29 from 2:30 4 pm Design your own Christmas stocking pattern and knit up an heirloom! Learn to chart a name and choose pattern motifs using multiple colors. This is a class for experienced knitters who are comfortable working stranded colorwork with two colors. Skill Level = Experienced Chim Chim-in-ney Hat... $30 Instructor: Cori Eichelberger Thursdays, July 13, 20 & 27 from 7 8 pm Make a hat for a child in the family or make one for every family member. This is a fairly simple colorwork hat that can be a nice introduction to carrying and managing floats and making an i-cord. The 2-week class will allow you to learn how to construct the hat, as well as give you a time-line for getting it complete before the Christmas rush. Won t everyone look great on their Christmas cards when they re wearing matching hats? (Materials needed are worsted yarn in 2 colors with a bit of scraps for the string of Christmas light). Skill Level = Intermediate 4
Christmas Gnome... $20 Instructor: Jody Ouradnik Saturdays, July 22 & 29th, 1 2pm Invite a diminutive magical spirit to join you at your holiday table! These little crocheted Christmas Gnomes work up so fast you ll want to create a whole family of them as gifts or holiday décor. The two-session class is for beginning crocheters who are already comfortable making chains and single crochet stitches. You ll learn how to increase, decrease, and work single crochet in the round to make these figures. Skill Level = Easy (Participants should be comfortable making chains and single crochet stitches. This is not a class for someone brand-new to crochet. If you have not crocheted before, please take the Intro to Crochet class before taking the Christmas Gnome class). Santa Hat... $20 Instructor: TBA Sundays, July 9 & 16 from 1-2pm In this two-session class you will learn to make a simple stocking cap with a fuzzy white brim, just like Santa s. Suitable for advanced beginner knitters who know how to knit and purl. You will learn how to work in the round and how to read a simple pattern. The pattern includes sizes for children and adults, so you can make hats for the whole family! Skill Level = Easy Regular Clinic Hours: Saturday 10 - noon 5
