Greetings, I have had so much fun with our guild this past month. First, there was Sit and Sew and then Community Service Night. If you have not attended one of these events please make an effort to attend the next one. Both are fun and fantastic opportunities to get to know your fellow members better. This will be my last note as President of our guild. This last year has been great and I have truly enjoyed my time serving our guild. I was quite nervous when I began my term. But I did not need to be. Our board and this guild are truly the best there is. We have all worked together to grow our guild and fulfill our mission this past year. I am proud of everything we have done. If we were not moving I would happily serve another year. I wish there was enough time to thank everyone individually. Please allow me to express my sincerest gratitude to all of you. You have helped me to grow as a quilter and more importantly a person. I truly appreciate each and every one of you. We hope to return to Texas to retire in a few years. I look forward to when our paths will cross again. Until then may your days be filled with fabric and your bobbin always full. Cheers, Kathleen President's Note 1

Sew What s New? Submitted by Barbara Burr What does a beautiful red, white, and blue Quilt of Valor, a magical wooden seam roller, and Russian potato vodka have in common? All were topics of discussion when Waco invaded the Friendship Quilt Guild of Brenham, Texas. Quilters love to share their craft, so when the Brenham guild invited our president Kathleen Thompson and president-elect Karen Curlee to speak at their meeting, it was a great excuse for a Road Trip! Kathleen brought her husband, Mark. Lisa Williams, Joyce Jones, and Barbara Burr tagged along with Karen. Opening the program was a surprise gift of the Quilt of Valor for Mark, who- -by the way--is a doctor and the Commander of the Medical Center at Ft. Hood. This one, however, caught the Colonel by complete surprise and he actually blushed as a very proud wife stood quietly by. Kathleen went on to teach all of us many tricks about bindings and demonstrated a fascinating array of quilting tools for sale, including that handy wooden seam roller, of which she completely sold out! Karen followed up with an entire suitcase full of tools, many straight from Harbor Freight, that you would never dream of using with quilts, but which actually work quite well and really come in handy. From the snake light coiled around her neck to the value of skateboarder s tape, her hints and suitcase of secrets were helpful to all. Oh, and about that vodka? Well, just mix it with distilled water and use it as natural starch. With our tummies, full of hot coffee and a variety of home-made cookies, we said our farewells to new friends and headed north to hearth and home. We all know that quilters are a very special breed of people, always welcoming and friendly, loving to learn, and eager to share their knowledge. Aren t we lucky to be among them? 4

TAQG RALLY DAY 2017 July 8, 2017, you have a unique opportunity to attend a free day of quilt related fun. That is the date of Rally Day 2017. We hope that you have attended a Rally Day in the past, but if you have not let me share with you what will happen at Rally Day 2017. This year's event will be held at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church, 1233 North Beltline Rd, Mesquite, Texas. The doors will open at 9:00 AM. The first thing you have to do is show your current guild membership card. As long as your guild is a TAQG member you get in free! If you are not a member of a TAQG guild you will be charged $5.00 at the door. Everyone will receive a door prize ticket. Just for attending you may win one of 100 door prizes. The first door prize to be given away is a Baby Lock Anna sewing machine. It is valued at $399 and has been donated by Plano Sewing Center. You can see more information about the door prizes and their donors at www.taqg.org. Homespun Quilters <> Membership News Clara Jean Matustik We had 41 members at the May community service meeting. THE BUZZ ABOUT BEES CINDY BRUCE 723-7754, cbruce49@yahoo.com The Homespun Quilters Guild sponsors many quilting bees to which members can belong. There are bees that meet at night as well as bees that meet during the day. Some bees may be highly organized where there is always some kind of group effort going on, and there are very hang-loose bees whose members simply enjoy getting together to sew, talk and maybe eat! Some bees meet in public places while others meet in member s homes. Bees may have limited membership because of space. If you are interested in joining a bee or forming a new Bee, please let me know and I will work with you. The $233 and $210 income for the 2018 Raffle Quilt needs to be moved to the 2017 Raffle Quilt. Board members will review further at home and call Joanne with other changes. We will be discussing better ways to distinguish between our different Challenges to prevent future confusions. The Budget Meeting will be on May 22 nd at 6:30 in the Fellowship Hall. Incoming and outgoing Officers and Chairs need to attend. Programs: Evelyn May Guild is Community Service night o Bring machines, irons, rotary cutters, etc. o We will have Show & Tell, but not Door Prizes or Library or Bee. The Cut Ups have been rescheduled for November. o There will be some handouts from Hobbs at this meeting while supplies last. The 2018 Programs are booked. o Newly added is The Thread Jazz for Quilting & Embellishing Lecture (1-1 ½ hours) and Needle & Thread Know How by Sulky which will include a Guild Fundraiser Package, a Door Prize Drawing Package, and Assorted Information Packets. Evelyn will check their flexibility if a date change is needed. Joanne is sending the non-refundable $200 deposit. The $249 balance is due 90 days before the event scheduled for September 17, 2018. o There are only 2 Workshops scheduled for 2018. The responsibility of printing the Bookmarks needs to be added to the VP / Programs. o Karen C. has the printer s information. Raffle Quilt 2017: Judy took the quilt to Brenham and Marble Falls. Patty Field is taking it to Austin for 2 days this coming weekend. Judy has scheduled it for Waxahachie, TAQG, and the HOT Fair. o Judy will enter it in the Clifton Quilt Show. 8

Judy would like to thank Kathleen for streamlining our business meetings at Guild. After attending other Guilds in the process of selling tickets, she appreciates how smoothly ours runs. Raffle Quilt 2018: Cindy Bruce and Judy Mathews made the houses. Chris Bryant assembled them in columns. Debbie Dewey is working on the applique which will hopefully be finished by mid-june. The assembly can then be completed by Karen Jeffrey. Linda Buckner will do the quilting. The finishing touches will be done by Rose Schroeder and Melva Magee. The 12 ½ Challenge Blocks will be flowers. Any method can be used. o Examples will be brought to Guild, and some patterns may be in the Newsletter. Submit any suggestions to Cindy Bruce. o Angela Ragan, owner of Tomorrow s Quilts, will bring fat quarters to the Guild meeting that are to be used in the flower blocks. Cash only. We may start calling this Challenge the Church Challenge Blocks to separate it from the Guild Challenge. Quilt Show 2018: Karen W. says Bill and Nancy Pugh will be scheduling a Show meeting. Bee Keeper: Cindy There were 19 people attending the recent meeting concerning Bees and their possible involvement in making the 2019 Raffle Quilt. Currently there are no volunteers. 2 people want to join a Bee. o Cindy will bring forms to Guild. Karen C. suggested a 2019 Theme of A Quilt 4 All Seasons. Perhaps making 4 small quilts would not seem as intimidating as making a large one. And it could include people from various Bees or those who are not in a Bee. Refer all ideas and suggestions to Cindy Bruce, including fabrics, budget, other themes, etc. The Board would also like to devise a plan to coordinate the Raffle Quilt Drawing in the same year as the Show s Theme. That may mean not making a quilt one year. Submit any suggestions and ideas to the Board. TAQG: Judy Karen C. did the power point that goes to the TAQG containing pictures of quilts, charity projects, etc. Evelyn will send Judy the information on making the bid sheets for the Silent Auction. Facebook / Website: Karen F. didn t have anything new to add. Debbie Stubbs is ready to take it over. Nominating Committee: Evelyn We still have no nominees for Education. Karen C. has volunteered to be President. o An email announcing her as a candidate will sent to the Membership. Policies & Procedures: Karen C. wanted to change the Board approved $500 expenditure of nonbudgeted disbursements back to $400. The Board decided to leave it at $500. Kathleen reminded us that our Continuity Notebooks need to be turned over to our replacements on June 22 nd. Barbara Burr will Chair the Challenge/Activity this coming year. She brought her ideas to the Board, and will announce the details at the July Guild Meeting. Beauty and the Beast theme. o Use of the color yellow representing Belle s gown. o Any ugly fabric representing the beast. o No competition just a show of completed items. o 5 categories She will also take over the UFO Challenge which she may change up a little after the completion of this one in July.
