To me, the New Year always means a time to start a new project. The weather is usually icky and grey - a good time to stay inside and concentrate on something new. It may be something from my bucket list like learning to knit socks, going to Antarctica, learning a new language, weaving, or reading the books on my "some day" shelf. Realistically, none of this is going to happen. It is tempting to say, " I am going to finish all of my UFOs!" But a new project is lots more fun. Resolutions like "I am going to lose...," I am going to finish..." or "I am going to quilt..." always seem a bit negative. They imply that you are doing something wrong that needs to be fixed. For years now I have started a new quilt in January - something challenging, but not discouragingly so. Something fun! If you haven't started already, this is a great time to start the President's challenge. You only have until May, but no pressure. Have a Happy New Year. V O L U M E 3 7, I S S U E 5 January Program P A G E 3. January 14, 2015: Color Wheel Maryjo Busch will present a lecture on color. Have you ever purchased a book or taken a class on color theory only to go home & find you still don't understand the material? MaryJo will teach us how to use the Artist Color Wheel and says that if you understand how to use this tool, all the other tools on the market will make more sense. MaryJo begins with a power point and will explain the various aspects of the color wheel in detail, and uses many photos to help you understand how the wheel will help you while designing quilts. The lecture includes a trunk show of many colorful quilts, each quilt representing different color wheel combinations. Show and tell will precede the lecture and the business meeting will follow. Page 5 Minutes for the December 11, 2014 meeting: The meeting was opened by President Betty Lerner who welcomed the members to the School House Night. Betty thanked and introduced the vendors and asked them to tell us a little about themselves. Vendors included Judy from Bungalow Quilting and Yarn, Julie from Patched Works, Rosemary from Bigsbees and Sue and Heather from Buttons and Bolts. Betty announced that Deb Merritt and Cheri Allen will co-chair the quilt show for 2016. Hospitality One more person is needed to bring a snack for the meeting next month. Newsletter The plan is to feature one or two members each month. It is requested that each member send a picture and the answers to any or all of the questions printed in the previous newsletter. Treasurer The current balance is $10,816.49. Auction Gloria reported that auction grossed $3,092.85. The expenses were $111.88 leaving a net of $2,980.97. Featured Guild Member Kay Batta When did you start quilting / sewing? I started sewing as a child, first making doll clothes and then my own clothes. I made my first quilt in 1971 or 1972. The quilt was a joint project with my little sister. The first time I washed it I discovered that we made 2 mistakes. You do not use cotton batting and tie the quilt and the bright red fabric my sister handed me was wool! What is your favorite style of quilting? Japanese and miniatures What is your favorite quilt memory? Aunt Florence started a Baby Broken Wedding Ring quilt during the Depression. She completed one block to serve as a pattern and made enough of the pieced arcs for 2 quilts. I finished one quilt for her and acquired the rest of the blocks which I am slowly working on. Many of the fabrics came from the family she was housekeeper for who liked her work so well they paid for her to finish high school. I have since taken her 19 block and converted it to a miniature see my name tag! IS there a quilt designer or author who you look to for inspiration? Kumiko Sudo I love her 3-D flowers What magazines, blogs, web sites, books do you look to for ideas? Quilters Newsletter and the AQS magazine, any book that looks interesting. How long have you been a member of the guild? Probably since 2005. What would you like the members to know about you? I grew up in Indiana and was inspired to quilt by my southern Indiana relatives. My grandparents had come up from Kentucky over a century ago where there is a strong quilting tradition. I managed to get a scholarship to Purdue and ended up in the computer field. What is the favorite quilt you ever made, tell us a story. My favorite color is yellow and I like Mary Ellen Hopkin s ideas for doing things more easily. I took her Improved Tibetan Fishnet block and turned it into a full-size bed quilt that looks like large flowers. It ended up too wide for my twin bed so I added more borders and made it a wedding present for my oldest nephew. His bride chose yellow and blue for her wedding colors. What types of road trips have you taken to acquire new ideas, fabrics for your stash or patterns? A decade or so ago, a quilter in western Wisconsin died leaving an incredible stash of fabric from around the world. It was worth the trip! What quilt shows have you attended? Would you make a recommendation? I attended the 2013 AQS show in Michigan and would heartily recommend it! What is your favorite quilt tool(s) The rotary quilter! I started quilting before it was invented so I really appreciate it. Where do you go to have your quilts quilted? While it is slower than the usual stitch, it does not show and holds the applique firmly.
