The Pine Needle Press Volume 32 Issue 5 Pine Tree Quilt Guild May 2015 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since 1984. Published monthly except August. 11255 Banner Mine Way, Nevada City 95959 www.pinetreequiltguild.com Greetings Guild Members, President's Message, May 2015 Last month I wrote about how you personally benefit from volunteering. This month I decided to take a look at who else benefits from your volunteering efforts. Here is what I came up with. Beneficiaries of your volunteering: --The Guild. Our guild has thrived for over 30 years primarily as a result of the volunteer efforts of our members. Without these efforts, our guild would not exist. --Other members of the Guild. When you volunteer, you create new connections with other guild members and often form new friendships as well. --The recipients of Community Service donations. These recipients have included infants, children, the elderly, members of military, and victims of disasters, to name a few. The many thank you notes we receive attest to the beneficial impact of these efforts. --Your spouse/partner/significant other. Volunteer activities get you out of the house, into the community and out of their presence, even if just for a short time. When you are gone, they miss you and appreciate you more, which makes you happy. And when you're happy, they're happy. (I know this one was a bit of a stretch.) --Our Nevada County community. When distributing quilt show flyers last year to businesses in downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley, I was struck first by the joyful welcome of the merchants to display our flyer. Second, when placing our flyer next to the others, I was struck by the colorful patchwork of notices for other events going on. It was evident to me at that moment that our guild is a tangible and vibrant part of the patchwork of the life of our community. This last item brings me to our 2015 Quilt Show, which is just around the corner (May 2nd & 3rd). This event epitomizes the multitude of volunteer efforts of our guild. It is a celebration of our coming together to show our work, raise funds for charitable projects and for the Guild, and to enrich the greater community. See you at the Show! The Pine Needle Press Page 2 QUILT SHOW UPDATE As we write this, we are just over two weeks from SHOW TIME! A big thank you to everyone who has stepped up to take on a project and volunteer to make our Cozy up to Quilts show come together so beautifully. A new and exciting menu, 1/2 Turkey, Roast Beef, Ham or Veggie sandwich with salad and fruit or a Cobb salad will be served. Country Store will be bursting, and of course there will be bountiful baskets and lovely silent auction items. Community Service will have two demonstrations each day, 11:30 and 1:30 in the Northern Mines Building. It s not too late to donate something to Silent Auction! You can even bring your item on Saturday morning but please let Ginni DeThomas know in advance so she can plan 205-9536 or ginnidethomas@gmail.com. We have a lot of laughs and fun with the show. Mary and Anne Mary Serpa and Anne Wilson, Quilt Show Co-chairs URGENT: Silent Auction Items desperately needed!!! We have 21 Silent Auction items to date and about 5 or 6 hopefuls. We need about 60 items to pull this off! Please go into your stash of completed items, think of a service you can provide or get going on something! This is for our Guild! It takes all of us! This is for our Guild! It takes all of us!

The Pine Needle Press Page 9 From our Equipment Co-Chair, Mary Serpa I am excited to report that we have new racks in storage for our quilt frame components! Many, many thanks to Ruth and Dennis Bertaccini, Jim Ellisor, Rod Ferreira, Tom Grant and Steve Mosley, for hours spent researching and constructing a very practical and economical new storage system. The frames give us easier access to move them to and from the fairgrounds each year which should save us hours of volunteer labor. Additional thanks to Dennis for constructing transportable structures that will hold our frames as they go to and from the show. These will allow us to use the truck more efficiently and save on wear and tear to the frames.
