Introduction Rangesongs develos your high and low ranges by using target notes in a musical context to encourage you to move your air roerly. or high notes use intense, ast moving air, and or low notes use a generous amount o slow moving air. ollow these guidelines when laying Rangesongs: 1. I you ever eel ain, sto laying immediately and seek hel rom a medical roessional. 2. Do a thorough warm u beore laying Rangesongs or start with some o the low songs. Do not begin by laying extremely high without an adequate warm u. 3. When working in the high register, send as much time resting as you do laying. 4. Do not roceed to the next higher target note until you are comortable in the range you are currently working on. Be methodical in your aroach and take your time. 5. Mix u your racticing so you sometimes lay songs that are easily within your range and other times you challenge yoursel to reach target notes that are just out o your range. 6. Each Rangesong ractice session should last between 15 and 30 minutes and include aroximately 10 15 songs, alternating between high and low songs. You may wish to include two or three Rangesong sessions in any given ractice day. 7. Do not strain to reach the high notes. I you ind yoursel straining, lower your target note by ½ ste. 8. The best way to use Rangesongs is to alternate between high and low songs. 9. You will make quicker rogress i you ractice Rangesongs daily; however, i you begin to eel too atigued, take a day o rom Rangesongs. 10. Don t lay high Rangesongs on concert days unless you are conident you can lay your best ater working intensely in the high register. 11. ocus on moving the air roerly at all times: intense, ast air or the high notes and generous, slow air or the low notes. High Range: or the high range, Rangesongs imroves your range and endurance systematically by using two strategies:
1. The hrases within each song are seciically comosed to build melodically to a designated target note, as in the ollowing examle rom a song with G lat as its target: I you ollow the indicated hrasing and ocus on laying musically, you will eventually get stronger and more eicient in the high register because you will learn to generate an intense, ast moving air stream to achieve the high note. The hrasing rovides a comelling musical incentive to suort the tone with the roer air seed. NOTE: The title o each song reers to the target note or highest note in the song not necessarily the key. 2. The high range ortion o Rangesongs is organized rogressively by target note starting with above the sta and roceeding chromatically u to high. There are ive songs or each target note (or a total o 65 songs) and the target note is always the highest note in each song. This organization ensures systematic racticing resulting in gradual imrovement. In addition, each song is short, lasting only one minute or slightly longer. Low Range: or the low range, Rangesongs extends the range downward by ½ stes. There are ive songs or each target note starting with low and rogressing down to edal B lat (or a total o 40 songs). Strive or a resonant, consistent tone in the low register and suort the tone with a generous amount o slow moving air. When you ractice generating the air low necessary or resonant low notes, your high register also beneits. The ability to roduce the aroriate intensity and amount o air is the key to extending your range in both directions. When you ractice your air low, your embouchure will develo gradually over time. NOTE: I you are not able to lay the indicated hrases comortably in the low Rangesongs, it is accetable to seed u the temo or break the indicated hrasing by adding a breath. Do not strain to squeeze the last bit o air rom your body to make the hrases.
