Meeting Update: Newsletter: May 2017 For our May 2 meeting, we took a field trip to the Innovation Hub in North Little Rock s Argenta neighborhood. We were treated to a presentation and tour of the facility by Errin Stanger, Director of Programs, Memberships, and Events. The Hub is known as a maker space, a place for learning, creating, and working. They offer co-working space, design studios, cutting-edge equipment and technologies, with experienced mentorship and classes. The only one of its kind in Arkansas, they offer help with ideas for possible products and business development, A variety of memberships are available, which provide access to all the facilities and services. For more information, see their website https://arhub.org/ or call 501-907-6570.

On Saturday, May 27, members of APS met at Two Rivers Park for a paint-out, in lieu of our regular June meeting. Thanks to Linda Pneuman for sending pictures of the group.

Mini-workshop Trees On Saturday, May 23, Shirley Anderson presented a mini-workshop on painting trees in pastel using a variety of underpainting treatments, including watercolor, Pan Pastel, and regular pastel washed in with water or Turpenoid. She also discussed using clear gesso to build up texture as part of the underpainting process. She recommended using white paper with both watercolor and Pan Pastel underpaintings, because colored papers will alter the underpainting colors. She likes to use Pastel Premier paper with watercolor underpainting and Multi-Media pastel panel for Pan Pastel. She uses the underpainting to establish shapes and values, then builds up her colors gradually to create the painting using tiny curving strokes. Use the stick on edge like a paintbrush. One resource she recommended for additional help with trees is an online book by Deborah Secor. It s available free to download at http://landscapesinpastel.blogspot.com/.

Announcements: Mary Ann Stafford has announced multiple showings of her artwork this summer. She will have work at The Rep June 2-25, as well as Art on the Green in Conway, NCA Art Gallery in Fairfield Bay, and Gallery 221 in Little Rock. She has a pastel entered into the ALA Members' show at Laman Library June-July. (The awards ceremony/reception is June 9 from 6-8 pm.) She has also sold a bag on shopvida.com. See accessories with her images at this website -- https://shopvida.com/collections/pastelanne Shirley Anderson and Caryl Joy Young are showing their art at Garvan Gardens, which will continue through the month of June. Shirley Anderson was also named the Exhibition Chair for the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and is coordinating the Friday Night Fiesta event at the 2017 IAPS Convention. A number of members from our society will be attending IAPS this year and will host an APS booth at the Friday Night Fiesta. Shows and Exhibits: Twenty-five paintings by nine artists were chosen for a pastel exhibit at St. James United Methodist Church. Bill Burgin organized and curated the exhibit, which will be on display through 7/5/17. Please remember to pick up your paintings on that date.

Reminders: Please check for any unreturned library materials you may still have, and return them to Yvonne at our August meeting. Workshops: Arkansas Pastel Society PORTRAITS IN PASTEL By Susan Hurst Sept. 9, 2017 9:30AM-3PM Butler Center, Little Rock, AR Donation: $25 (APS) This helps support the APS National Show Contact Person: Sheliah Halderman sheliahalderman@sbcglobal.net (Sign-up form on following page) In this one day workshop, students will explore the selection process she goes through to execute a portrait. Students can bring a photograph to work from or Susan will have some available to use. If possible we will have a live model to work from. Bring supplies that you are familiar with in a variety of colors, mindful of skin tones. A basic selection of pastels, plus vine charcoal, and a kneaded eraser is all that is required. Some hard pastels are useful for the finishing stages. Surfaces should be at least 16 x20. Susan is primarily a portrait and landscape artist. She works in pastel and oil and has received awards in both mediums. An Arkansas resident for most of her life, she grew up in Findlay, Ohio. In the early 90 s she lived in White Hall and maintained a studio/frame shop and taught art classes at the Little Fire House for the Pine Bluff Art League. She has studied extensively with Guido Frick, Bruce Peil, Richard McKinley, and Albert Handell. A workshop with Daniel Greene in his barn studio for a week was also significant to her studies Recently she completed 9 oil portraits for Little Rock Heart Hospital. Other awards include Best of Show for the Arkansas Members Only Pastel Exhibit 2017, Best of Show White River Plein Air Festival, Best of Show Arkansas League of Artists Members Only 2017, and Best of Arkansas award at the Arkansas Pastel National Show 2016.
