Lovereading Reader reviews of Shift by Jeff Povey Below are the complete reviews, written by Lovereading members. Aimee Sweet, age 13 One moment Rev was in a boring detention, and the next there was a massive blinding flash of a light and everyone in the whole world had disappeared. Apart from the people in the detention with her. What should she do? Should she run around, go crazy? Or should she stay low and try to work out where the others have gone? But it seems like she and her friends aren t the only ones; there are others out there, exactly like them, but with supernatural powers. Now this new world isn t as safe and fun as it was before- the fact that everyone s gone and Rev is alone with these monsters is now extremely scary But what if it s the other way round? What if she s disappeared, into a mirror image of their world? A gripping and captivating book, Jeff Povey has definitely convinced me that there s something out there which is dangerous! All of the made up characters are intriguing and loving especially Rev, Johnson, GG and the Ape. For me my favourite character is the Ape ( it s Dazza ) because of his cute fondness or Rev and his insistence that he should save the others, even when the worse comes round. This book is so good it blew me off my feet and I would be insanely proud if I was the author of it. With so many twists and turns, this book is best for it s spellbinding words. The age range is 13+ but 10 year olds can read it too as it took me two days to read, and trust me I was busy! This book is could be especially enjoyed by girls
because of it s romance and characters. I give it a four star. Callum White, age 14 - St. Colm s High School This book is a must read for any fan of the Gone series. But there is a Shift to this story. This is a 10/10 novel and Jeff Povey has done an amazing job and I will want to read more of his books. The storyline is about eight teenagers who have to save the world. Their detention room gets zapped by a strange beam and there is nobody left in the world except their evil duplicates. You can imagine what it would be like to meet an evil you. A wee bit weird! But do they save the world? Read it now to find out what happens. You will really enjoy every minute of it. Heidi Stokes, age 13 Fun book aimed at young adults, about seven children having to save the world. Its filled with action, adventure and humour. This is a book about seven children who are in detention and a power surge hits the room. Everyone disappears apart from them and they have to work together or they will never see home again. George Oliver, age 15 This normally isn't my sort of book. I didn't really know what to think of it until I read a few chapters. It is a pretty good book. The plot made sense and though, sometimes confusing, a nice read. A quite nice, fanatical read. I found the characters interesting as I have a few friends who are a bit like that (Don't we all?). The book is very well written and found it very easy to understand what people were saying and what I believed would happen next. I especially liked the idea of fighting a parallel me. My feelings for the characters changed a lot throughout the book. About as much as my feelings for Snape from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows changed in his last few moments. The book, I believe, acted as an introduction to the characters and plot. Book two s plot is hard to guess and I can't wait for a sequel.
Rose Heathcote, age 15 FANTASTIC! If you enjoyed the Charlie Higson series you will definitely enjoy this book. It is bloody and brutal and I enjoyed reading it from the very start. Eight teenagers with completely different personalities are left alone together trying to save the world. The book at times is funny because of the unlikely relationship that exists between them; however, they always look out for each other. Violence and gore is plentiful throughout the book so fans of zombies, blood and everything gruesome will not be disappointed. It has an unexpected plot twist at the end which leaves you thirsty for more. I hope the author is already writing the next book and it won t be long before I am reading that one too. I would definitely give this book 5 *****. A MUST READ. Sophia Ufton - Adult This book was just brilliant, funniest book I've read in a long time. The twists and turns were just amazing! Couldn't put it down. Defiantly a Laugh Out Loud book. A group of children Rev, Billie, the Ape, Johnson, GG, Carie, the Moth and Lucas are in detention and a huge flash like a power surge engulfs the school (and possibly the world). They all go outside one by one and soon realize they seem to be the only ones there. They find one man who appears to have been badly burned and he tries to tell Rev something but ends up dying from his wounds. She goes to find out what happened to him by following his burnt, gooey trail but almost ends up getting burnt badly herself. They decide to go and find out what as happened to everyone. They end up meeting lethal duplicate copies of themselves who have super powers and will kill anything that gets in there way. Will they survive and find out what happened, read the book and find out! Ellie Frost A group of teenagers kept at school for detention suddenly find they are alone. A flash of light, and everyone has disappeared. How do they survive? Are they really alone? A group of teenagers are in detention. Not all of them are supposed to be there.
A bright flash of light and everyone else in their world seems to have vanished. At first it seems almost like a game, raiding a supermarket for food, driving a car on empty roads, until they discover that there are other people around - clones of themselves, but much more powerful and utterly ruthless. How they deal with this situation forms the core of the book. This is a great read. I was totally caught up in the action and really cared about all the different characters. The only disappointment was the ending, as I wanted to know more. Perhaps the author will write a sequel. Melanie Chadwick Non-stop action, violent, great chases near misses and escapes, big fight scenes, lots of people die and some come back to life and it also found time to be really funny at times. It would make a fabulous film or TV series. A group of teens find themselves in detention for various reasons. The fire alarm goes off and there s a big flash of light. After that they find that everyone has disappeared; they are the only people in the world. Things couldn t get any worse right? Wrong. Turns out they re not alone, not quite. They ve each got an evil copy of themselves roaming the streets, hunting them down and trying to kill them. This would be bad if they were just normal clones, but they turn out to be faster, more ruthless and more powerful. It s a race against time to see who will manage to survive. Rev, the narrator of the story has the added complication that she is in love with both versions of the suave, cool and beautiful Johnson, and the other version of Johnson can use strong telepathy to get into her head and read her thoughts and share his powerful emotions. As the book progresses I came to love the characters especially the simple fighting boy Ape, AKA Dazza. There s a great twist at the end which leaves the book open for a sequel, though I don t think it needs one. Anyone who liked Michael Grant s Gone will love this. Rosa Boran, age 14 I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one. It was so interesting and funny too. I loved all the characters and the plot was great. Shift is a book about a strange event that causes some high school kids to become trapped in an alternate universe with evil versions of themselves. I was
excited to read this book and I am so excited for the next one in the series. I really enjoyed it and thought it was great. It was tense, funny and fast paced. I thought the characters were great but one or two annoyed me. It was overall just a really good book and I hope the next one comes soon.
