IB Visual Arts Summer Assignment: Objective: After Reading Persepolis students will create a Self Portrait inspired by a theme from the graphic memoir. This is the prompt that you selected from your English Summer Assignment. Deadline: 09/27/2018 Materials needed: 1. Hard Bound Sketchbook 9 x12 2. Drawing pencils, Colored pencils, paint, etc. 3. Your final Artwork must be 11x14 on Bristol. 1. Theme After reading Persepolis select one of the themes below with which you feel a strong connection. You will be required to create an art piece that tells your personal story through Portraiture without the use of words. Coming of age Women and Femininity Identity Family Fear Change 2. What is Process? In your sketchbook you will record your artistic process, reflections, research and ideas. You must plan out your drawings several times before drafting the final outline. The process should be recorded in 4-8 sketchbook pages with annotations of ideas, sketches, plans, outlines and research about your visual representation and media testing. Look at examples of IB Visual Art Process on Pinterest to get an idea of what I am looking for. You may also look at the examples attached. 3. Beginning of Process: In your sketchbook begin writing any ideas that can be visually represented in drawing based on the theme that you picked. Reflect about the theme and make personal connections about your life. How do you feel about the theme? What can you narrate about yourself? What would you like people to know about you? How can this be represented in a drawing or paining? What is the story that you want to tell through art? Look up a famous artists that has created a self portrait that interest you and create a page about the artist and his or her work like the examples bellow. Name of Artists Nationality Brief History of origin and historical period. Explanation of their work. 2 examples of their work with photos and examples of your work emulating their work. 4. Composition and Technique: Research about compositions in art and how to create a successful composition and plan out your drafts. Arrange your ideas and drawings in an interesting composition and then divide your paper in 3-5 panels. Draw one scene in each panel using good compositions (look at the rules of compositions attached) then use shading techniques to illustrate the image. It s important to learn about the artist who created the art for Persepolis, research about the artist and techniques. 5. Elements of Art: Research about Negative /Positive Space, Value, Contrast, in art and how to create shading values using a media with which you are most interested in exploring. You may want to look up videos on how to create value with a specific medium or you can learn by exploring. Your intentions to master a specific type of media will guide you

to select what you want to focus on. Record your research in your sketchbook and reference any sources from which that you got inspiration. 6. Media: Your artwork can be created in any media such as acrylic paint, china markers, ink, Copic markers, oil pastels, relief printmaking, collage, photography, Photoshop, etc. The artwork must have white media on a black surface. You will be graded on the use of media, techniques, concept and composition. You might want to visit Texas Art Supplies, Hobby Lobby or Jerry s Artarama to buy specific art supplies that you want to use. 7. Final Exhibition Piece with Text: Once your artwork is complete, you will photograph your final piece, and upload your photo into a Power Point Presentation with an exhibition text that explains your intentions. Create a text box 5x7 with the following information then add your photo above or next to the text: Student Name Title of work Medium (materials used) Dimensions (size) Exhibition Text: (explanation of intent of the work with reference to any sources that have influenced the piece) Exhibition Text must be 500 characters including spaces. 8. Vocabulary Definitions: Please look up the following words and write the definition in your sketchbook: 1. Negative and Positive Space 2. Contrast 3. Repetition 4. Value 5. Shading 6. Composition 7. Media 8. Techniques 9. Concept 10. Texture 11. Pattern Materials:

Positive/Negative Triptych Self- Portrait Challenge Create visual story-telling with a triptych using white shading on black paper For this project you will: Select a theme from Persepolis; think of this as if you are telling a visual story through story boarding. You will then design how to break-up the images into a minimum of 3-5 panels. Then you will decide how you will shade using posi-tive/negative space techniques. The tryptic must show your personal narrative that reflects a self portrait. You must add elements that reflects your personal identity. Expectations/Problem-Solving & Skill Elements You must have at least 3 panels; if you want to break your work up further you may do so; you are not limited to square & rectangular panel shapes You must have some shading that is white on black paper, but you are not limited to this; you may use color to enhance (just remember that this is not a project about building color skill) You must create original work instead of copying that of others (any reference material you use must be manipulated); taking your own photographs is a good approach for this project You must keep in mind good composition in each panel; think of each panel as separate before it s a whole Although I want to see shading, you are not limited to just that; you may include shape and pattern work, contour or expressive line work, etc.

Look at the examples bellow for Good Design Choices! Good Composition.

Process Sketchbook Examples: Your sketchbook pages must be fully complete and show development of your self-portrait supported by research, visual ideas, photographs and inspirational images.
