Introduction These notes are provided to assist servers with preparing for and serving at Easter Vigil Mass. Easter Vigil mass will be at 8pm in the Church Preparation 1. Servers Three (3) AS#1 & AS#2, Thurifer (AS#3) 2. Arrival 45 minutes before the start of mass 3. Vestments White Alb and White Cincture 4. Altar Candles Light at the Gloria 5. Holy Water Yes 2 Buckets baptistery, stand by east window 6. Incense Yes See Notes 7. Humeral NO 8. Server Table Standard finger bowl, cruet, finger towel, Chalice 9. Credence Table (Under tabernacle): Missal, Purificators, Chalices 10. Binder Yes See Notes 11. Cross Only at the Recessional Procession 12. Processional Candles Globe candles & lighter East window table (Light at the Gloria) 13. Seats Standard Seats 14. Paschal Candle (have a butane lighter as a back up incase the candle goes out while processing from the Fire to the Church.) General 1. The Brass Globe candles are used during this mass. Processions 1. Service of Light Fire pit to Narthex (Incense & Tapers) (Sidewalk) 2. Service of Light Nave (Incense & Tapers) (Center) 3. Gospel (Incense Only) (Front) 4. Litany (Binder) (Center) 5. Baptism (asperges) (Holy Water Bucket)(E & W Aisle) 6. Offertory (Incense) (Center) 7. Recessional (Cross & Candles) (Center) 1

Arrival 1. Servers arrive at the church 45 minutes early and put on albs and white cinctures. 2. Prepare, yourselves and the church setup, as noted in the preparation section and review the processions as noted in the procession section. 3. Check with Presider for any last minute needs or changes. Summary of Easter Vigil Activities [Roman Missal (RM) First Part] Service of Light From Fire pit [RM 8 15] 1. Servers gather in the narthex. a. Thurifer (AS#3) has incense (censer and boat) b. AS#1 has binder and a taper (unlit). c. AS#2 has a taper (unlit). 2. Servers will go with Presider and Deacon to the fire pit in the parking for lighting of the Easter candle. 3. Servers lead procession from the parking lot to the narthex. (Order is ) a. Thurifer (with smoking incense censer), Deacon with Easter candle, AS#1 & AS#2 (with unlit tapers), Presider, others 4. Once in Narthex, AS#1 and AS#2 light tapers from the Easter Candle. 5. Wait in Narthex until Presider and Deacon instruct you to go into the nave. 6. When instructed, enter the nave and lineup as follows: a. Deacon with Easter Candle, Thurifer, AS#1 & AS#2, Presider, others Service of Light Nave [RM 15 17] 7. Station #1 (Baptistery/1 st Black Tile cross in floor) When all is ready, the Presider chants the Light of Christ for the first time. The procession moves slowly to the next stopping point. (Servers should get positioned on either side of the aisle.) 8. Station #2 (4 th row from front/3rd Black Tile cross in floor) - The Deacon carries the candle to the 4 th row and turns around. The Presider/ushers/servers start lighting tapers on ends of each row. When all tapers are lit, the Presider chants the Light of Christ for the second time. The procession continues. 9. Station #3 (Foot of altar) a. Thurifer stands on Red Carpet in front of ambo, AS#1 & AS#2 stand on red carpet in front of altar (east side). b. Turn and face congregation c. All candles should be lit and then Presider chants d. Deacon, Presider and Thurifer prepare to incense Easter Candle. e. Deacon places Easter candle in position (west side in front of steps). 2

f. Thurifer stands by candle. g. AS#1 & AS#2 go to seats h. Thurifer assists Presider and Deacon with incensing i. When complete, Thurifer delivers censer and boat to usher (positioned by AS#1 chair, east aisle) and returns to seat. Exsultet (Sung) [RM 18 19] 10. Servers keep tapers lit during the Exsultet, and extinguish tapers at the completion of the Exsultet. (Specifically before the presider starts the Dear Brothers and sisters fullness of redemption ) [Roman Missal (RM) Second Part] Liturgy of the Word [RM 20 36] 11. Four sets of readings: Reading/Sung Response/ Let Us Pray a. AS#1 will bring binder to presider four times, after each of the four (4) sung responses and just prior to Let Us Pray. 12. During the Gloria [RM 31] a. AS#1 & AS#2 light candles. The tapers must be FIRST lit from the Paschal Candle (Easter Candle) located in front of the Ambo, and this flame is then transferred from the tapers to the altar candles and the processional candles on the table by the east window. b. (If Necessary the Altar Server Coordinator assigned to the mass will assist AS#1 and AS#2 with lighting tapers from the Paschal candle.) c. AS#2 will light alter candles. After the altar candles are lit, return the taper to altar server table, and then AS#2 will process between altar and ambo and return back to their seat. d. AS#1 will light processional candles on the table. After the globe candles are lit, place the taper on the table, and then AS #1 will process back to their seat. e. AS#1 & AS#2 must complete lighting the candles and returning to their seats before the Gloria is completed. 13. Collect [RM 32] a. AS#1 will bring binder to presider for the Collect, and prior to Let Us Pray. b. AS#1 when done returns to seat. 14. Epistle [RM33] 3

a. Servers, at the end of epistle, get ready for Gospel Procession. 15. Gospel Procession with ONLY incense (AS#3) (Note that processional candles are not used at Easter Vigil) [RM 34 35] Triple alleluia intoned by Presider. a. After the second reading, the Thurifer gets censer & boat from usher (standing by AS#1 chair) and brings the censer & boat to the Presider s chair, for the presider to insert incense. b. When Presider is done putting incense in censer, the Thurifer retraces steps down sanctuary steps and returns boat to usher prior to processing. c. Thurifer only, from the floor in front of the sanctuary, then executes gospel procession (in front of altar, up stairs with and to the left of the banister, and up to the ambo (SLOWLY). d. NOTE: During Easter vigil candle bearers are not used in Gospel procession because the Easter candle suffices to honor the risen Lord in his Gospel. e. Thurifer stays at Ambo until the Gospel is completed. f. At the completion of the Gospel, and during another alleluia, the Thurifer retraces steps back to altar Server #1 s chair and returns censer to the usher (standing by AS#1 chair). 16. Homily [RM 36] [Roman Missal (RM) Third Part] Rites of Initiation [RM 38, 41] 17. AS#1 goes to Presider with the binder. (At chair or Center aisle) 18. Presider, Deacon and AS#1 (with Binder) for: a. Presentation of elect b. Invitation to prayer c. Renunciation of sin and Profession of Faith (Do You I Do ) Litany (music Pray for us ) (Occurs during the procession back to the baptismal font) [RM 39, 41] 19. AS#2 joins AS#1 in the center aisle for the procession back to the baptismal font. 20. Two sets of Aspersorium & aspergillum (Holy water buckets and sprinklers) will be located at the baptismal font, in preparation for asperges (Sprinkling Rite). The stand is located on the floor near the railing by the Presider s chair. 21. AS#3 stays in seat. 22. Deacon will get Easter candle and lead the procession, followed by elect and sponsors, AS#1 & AS#2, and Presider. Sacrament of Baptism [RM 44/46, 45/47, 48-52] Blessing of Baptismal Water Dipping Easter Candle Acclamation ( Springs of water forever ) 4

Celebration of baptism 23. AS#1, with the binder, and AS#2 follow the Presider to the baptismal font. 24. Baptism occurs, and AS#1 holds binder for Presider. Procession back to the sanctuary [RM 52] 25. Procession back to sanctuary and Holy water sprinkling. a. AS#1 (with Presider- East Aisle) and AS#2 (with Deacon West aisle) walk with Presider and Deacon for sprinkling of Holy Water. i. AS#1 Holds Binder and bucket ii. AS#2 Holds bucket, (Free hand flat on chest.) 26. After Holy water sprinkling is complete, AS#1 place bucket in stand and AS#2 place bucket on table by east window. a. AS#1 immediately goes to Presider, with the binder, for Celebration of Confirmation. b. AS#2 goes back to seat Celebration of Confirmation [RM 53] 27. AS#1 goes to Presider with the binder. (Just follow the Presider s lead.) General Intercessions [RM 58] 28. AS#1 goes to Presider with the binder. [Roman Missal (RM) Fourth Part] Offertory [RM 59, 60] 29. When Server #1 returns to seat after General Intercessions, then all servers stand together and start offertory preparations. a. AS#1 prepares the altar and then return to seat standard process. b. AS#2 and Thurifer go to back of church by center aisle for the offertory. i. NO CROSS ii. Thurifer receives censor and boat from the usher. 30. Presider, Deacon and AS#1, at appointed time, come to center aisle to receive gifts. 31. The Thurifer, followed by, AS #2 will lead offertory down the center aisle. a. The Thurifer will ascend the steps to the sanctuary, between ambo and altar, and wait standing behind and to the right of the altar, by the Presider s chair. Gifts and washing hands [RM 60] 32. AS#1 & AS#2 place gifts on altar, then wait by server table with linen and glassware, until incensing is complete. 33. Thurifer will assist Presider with incensing of gifts standard process. 5

a. When complete the Thurifer will descend steps, between altar and Presider s chair, and deliver censor and boat to usher by AS#1 chair, and return to seat. 34. AS#1 and AS#2, now get into position by altar, and perform standard hand washing process, descend altar steps (between altar and ambo), genuflect (right knee) and return to seats. Communion [RM 64 67] 35. Servers receive communion according to the new process. a. Wait until all servers receive each form, before moving to the next station. b. AS#1 clears altar as standard. c. AS#2 and Thurifer return to seats. Concluding Rites [RM 67, 68-69] 36. AS#1 brings the binder to Presider after communion at the standard time. 37. After (Prayer after communion, Invitation, Final Blessing, and Dismissal,) and when AS#1 returns to seat with binder, all servers stand together, and prepare for recessional procession 38. Servers will retrieve candles and cross, and line up in center aisle (cross at 2 nd row, candles at 1 st row) in standard fashion. 39. Follow standard Recessional Procession process out to the statue. (Altar servers lead, followed by newly confirmed, then followed by Presider and Deacon,) 40. END. Departure 1. Once the mass is complete, return globe candles to server/usher s room, and go and extinguish the altar candles. 2. Return cross to stand. 3. Remove your remove and carefully and neatly hang alb and place cinctures into their container. 4. Check with the Presider and Deacon and see if there is anything else they need for you to do. 5.
