OVERVIEW What does a timing device do? It generates a stable electrical signal to the chip which it is connected to. A ceramic resonator is generally called resonator. Actual vibration of a resonator is mechanical. But It can be also described as a model of basic electrical circuit of Ro, Lo, Co and Cm. These values can be acquired by measuring a resonator using network analyser. Equivalent Circuit: 2 October 2014
CLASSIFICATION OF RESONATOR Ceramic resonators stand between crystal resonators and LC/CR resonators in terms of accuracy. A ceramic resonator offers a low-cost and high-reliability timing device with improved start-up time and built-in capacitors option. 3 October 2014

IC CHARACTERISATION FOR CERAMIC RESONATOR For circuit safety critical application, IC matching is recommended on customer application PCB to ensure that the resonator is oscillating at the correct frequency and the oscillation circuit has enough oscillation margin for stable oscillation. The worst case and typical resonator samples are tested with microcontrollers from the customer s PCB to adjust frequency error and oscillation margin. The following test items are measured. The decision as to whether any resonator tuning is required is based on this test data. Oscillation frequency Oscillation amplitude Oscillator start and stop voltage Start-up time Load capacitance and damping resistance dependency Supply voltage and temperature dependency Oscillator frequency correlation (between test PCB and ACT standard) Negative resistance 8 October 2014
CERAMIC RESONATOR APPLICATION Ceramic resonators are used for a reference timing source in most microcontrollerbased applications. Typical applications are: Home appliances (CD/MD, HDD-video, audio, washing machine, air conditioner) Storage equipment (HDD, CD-R/W, DVD, memory card) Amusement (mouse, games) Automotive electronics (ECU, ABS, display unit) The list above includes just some examples. Ceramic resonators are used for a wide range of general electronic and IT applications. 9 October 2014
