Step 1: Elements of Well Being The first step to achieving your goals is establishing them. When we want to make a change and don t know how to do it or where to start, it can feel overwhelming and exhausting. It can also lead us to quitting before we even get started. So let s start with what s important to you. Think about your life in terms of the 5 elements of well-being established by Gallup. Determine what element(s) you are looking for the most growth and then circle them on this sheet. Purpose (career): how you occupy your time or simply like what you do every day Social: having strong relationships and love in your life Community: sense of engagement you have with the area you live Physical: having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis Financial: effectively managing your economic life
Now that you have determined what element(s) you want to work on, narrow it down to three or fewer and write them below. 1 2 3
Step 2: Discover Your WHY Often times we are trying to achieve someone else s goals for us as opposed to what we want for ourselves. This can be for a number of reasons and most of the time we don t even know that we are doing it. Discovering your why is essential as you move towards making a change in your life. Now, that you have come up with three elements, I want you to go back and reflect on them. Next to each of the elements above, write down exactly why you want to work on that area. It doesn t need to be an earth-shattering life changing reason, but it does have to be something important to you. Without clearly being able to identity your why you can easily find yourself distracted and not putting effort into making a change
Step 3: Establishing Your Goals Now, that you have established what is most important to you and why, let s break it down into three S.M.A.R.T goals. This method is essential because it gives you the opportunity to ask yourself some serious questions so there is no mystery behind what the goal is, if you can actually accomplish it, or when you are looking to complete it. So, what is a S.M.A.R.T goal? Here is the breakdown: S-Specific (What exactly do you want to accomplish?) M-Measurable (How will you know that you have completed your goal?) A-Attainable (Do you have the capacity and bandwidth to accomplish it?) R-Realistic (Does this goal make sense for where you are in your life RIGHT now?) T-Timely (What is your deadline for achieving the goal?)
Step 3: Establishing Your Goals Often times, we write down really vague goals: I am going to work out. While there are good intentions behind it, they are not working through the S.M.A.R.T method. Using the method above, your goal could be phrased I will work out at the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm for five weeks. Now, take some time to write down three S.M.A.R.T goals that align with the elements you want to focus on. Remember, look at the breakdown of the acronym above and make sure each goals answers these questions as you write down your goals on the following page.

Step 4: Following Through on Your Goals I know I have challenged you a little bit but we are getting closer to you living the life you want to live. When we start there is some excitement and novelty to working towards our goals, but then we can hit a wall. Before you hit the wall, it s key to have a plan to keep you motivated to get to that next level. Here are some strategies, I want you to implement: Find an accountability partner: You can think a little outside of the box on this one. It can either be a person, app, or another system that would work for you. Think about something or someone that will reach out and remind to stay focused on your goals. Asana and Slack are great apps if you are working with others on a project or task. Set up a reward system: Everyone loves a reward, right? This doesn t have to be something big but it does have to be something. Identify one thing that you will do for yourself when you have accomplished your goal. Tell people about it: Let people know what you are doing. Send texts, emails, post on social media. Whatever you need to do, do it! When we tell people about it, our friends will check in and ask questions and root for you along the way.
Step 4: Following Through on Your Goals Set smaller goals: While it s great to live in the go big, go home mindset, goal setting isn t the time to do it. Sure you should have a bigger over-arching goal but in order to achieve it, you need to set some smaller milestones to hit along the way. This will keep you motivated and give you the ability to assess your progress more often. Ask for help: Asking for help is a strength not a weakness. It s difficult if not impossible to complete our goals alone. Reach out to people you know and trust and ask for support along the way. Walk through your process with them and ask if they can spot any road blocks and for suggestions to avoid them. Re-evaluate: There might come a point where you need to take a step back and re-evaluate your goal. Life changes and things come up and it s OK to put a goal aside for the moment. Just because you don t have the space right now, doesn t mean it will never happen. You just need to be honest with yourself about where you are in your life.
Step 5: How To Circle Back I know it can be a little overwhelming when we are trying to make a change but by taking the time to recognize that you are important is a huge step. A slip up might happen and that s OK! Just remember, everything is not always OK and that s OK! It s about what we do in the moment and after that matter. Give yourself the space to take a step back, breath, and create a plan to move on. After you regroup, circle back to where you slipped up and see if you can implement another method from step four. Just know, I m rooting for you and please reach out with any questions! www.notokthatsokcoach.com alissa@notokthatsok.com
