The minister delivered his comments at the inauguration of the Kuwait Energy & Community Forum, which was held recently under his auspices and in the presence of a host of oil sector officials, economic pundits and representatives from Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Hussein noted that events like the Kuwait Energy and Community Forum complement official efforts of engaging the community and coordinating with the international community in order to effectively contribute to the prosperity of communities around the world. For his part, the DMD (Admin & Finance), Khaled Al-Khamees presented a paper in which he affirmed that the Kuwait Oil Company spares no effort in entrenching the concept of Corporate Responsibility, which has become part of the company s overall strategy. Al-Khamees spoke to the audience about outstanding achievements registered by the Company in this domain, including its contribution toward resolving a housing crisis in the country. He explained that the Company gave up 4,800 square-kilometer patches of land over the past years, which constitutes 26 percent of the total area of Kuwait. The DMD also told the gathering that KOC s concerted efforts have led to the reduction of gas flaring to a mere 1.75% during the fiscal year 2010-2011, which clearly reflects its keenness on the environment. Al-Khamees further pointed out that the Company is currently constructing the new Ahmadi Hospital Project at a cost of approximately 86 million Kuwaiti dinars, adding that the facility will provide the best health services and care to all oil sector employees. He also noted that KOC organizes numerous activities and media campaigns to raise the level of awareness among members of the society about health risks. The highly rated presentation, which was supported by images and video clips, was well received by the attendants who appreciated the Company s immense contributions to the community. The forum included the definition of CSR, success stories locally and regionally, media coverage concerning energy-related news as well as lessons to be learned. 7
KOC Participates in 3 rd Kuwait Medica Conference & Exhibition Kuwait Oil Company recently took part in the Third Kuwait Medica Conference & Exhibition that was held under the auspices of the Minister of Public Works and the Minister of State for Development, Dr. Fadhil Safar. In his opening speech, the minister affirmed that government policy is based on the achievement of its development agenda which includes various projects aimed at developing the health sector through the development of infrastructure. He added that the conference provides a platform for the identification of the latest developments and trends in the health sector in terms of design, construction and equipment. For his part, Asst. Undersecretary for Services at the Kuwait Ministry of Health, Eng. Samir Al Asfor, pointed out that the organization of the conference is in line with the ministry s strategic objective of improving and enhancing medical services. In the same context, the Ahmadi Hospital s Head of Administration Support Services, Qusai Al-Amer, presented a paper in which he highlighted the various medical services rendered to oil sector employees, in addition to the nursing and technical support services, as well as equipment offered by the private sector. Al-Amer also gave an overview of the new Ahmadi Hospital project which is being executed under the supervision of Major Projects 2. The presentation was wellreceived by the participants, and Al-Amer addressed their questions at the end. 2
TS Directorate Holds 4 th QPR Meeting Al-Sardi: Our Experiences Help Develop Performance, Foster Communication KOC s DC & DMD (TS) Mazen Al-Sardi recently said that the outcome of the 4th Quarterly Performance Review (QPR) for the Fiscal Year 2011/2012 that was organized by the Technical Services Directorate at KOC s main office was excellent. He then called for the circulation of the lessons that were learned through the media. He specifically underscored views that were represented in a video that was screened which emphasized that everybody, regardless of sex, age or physical ability, can play a decisive role in preventing tragic accidents such as fires in private or public places. Al-Sardi told Energy that quarterly meetings regularly organized by the Groups of the Directorate were a good opportunity for communication and exploring whether ongoing performance was on the right path and whether or not the figures obtained yielded the expected returns. He added that such meetings also pave the way to set up general guidelines for the Groups of the Directorate as a whole and constitute an opportunity to hear the opinions and queries raised by colleagues in a friendly atmosphere. Deliberations during the gathering, which was introduced and directed by Planning & Support TL Yahya Al-Matrook, focused on the financial and HSE aspects at the TS Directorate level. Presentations in this respect were delivered by Snr. Eng. Safety (HSE-TS Team) Emad Al-Shakhs, Planning Coordinator (MPsG-2) Nada Al-Qallaf, Snr. Eng. Planning (MPsG-1) Fatima Hamzah, Snr. Eng. Planning (EG) Abdullah Al-Falah, Planning Coordinator (ISG) Abrar Bogaith, and PC (S&FG) Adel Al-Azmi. Members of Corporate Culture Enhancement Project Honored Al-Sumaiti Hails Efforts of Participants A private ceremony was recently held at the KOC Main Office in recognition of those involved in enhancing KOC s Corporate Culture. In a speech he delivered on this occasion, DMD (Exploration & Production Development) Khaled Al-Sumaiti commended the efforts of all the members, especially the Advisory and Supervisory Committees. The ceremony was also attended by Grid President John Bakhos who awarded the participants with a Grid token and certificate. Created in January 2010, the project is geared toward enhancing KOC s Corporate Culture and is now entering Phase III which is due to be completed in May 2012. The project nurtures values such as candor, the ability to critique, initiative, inquiry, advocacy, decision making, conflict resolution and resilience, which are the backbone of this far-reaching project. 3
West Kuwait Directorate Holds QPR Al-Rasheed: Social Responsibility One of Our Main Priorities The WK Directorate held its Quarterly Performance Review (QPR) meeting under the chairmanship of the DMD (WK) Captain Ahmad Al-Rasheed. The purpose of the meeting, which was attended by several Managers and Team Leaders within the Directorate, was to discuss the latest developments and future plans. During a speech he made during the occasion, Al-Rasheed expressed gratitude to all employees within the Directorate for their notable contributions toward the attainment of numerous objectives on schedule. He also expressed hope that these successes would be sustained. I have no iota of doubt that these achievements couldn t have been made had it not been for your diligent efforts, he said. The DMD also stressed the Directorate s keenness to share its best practices with others. Meanwhile, Al-Rasheed referred to the efforts being made by the WK Directorate in serving the community considering the positive impact this creates for the Company s image and noted that CSR is among our priorities. For her part, Planning Team Leader (WK) Rima Al-Awadhi shed light on the main achievements registered by the Directorate over the past quarter and the efforts under way to accomplish the set goals and plans for the coming period. NK Directorate Wins RoSPA Gold Award KOC Commended for Occupational H&S Achievements 2012 KOC s North Kuwait Directorate has had its accident prevention and health services recognized in the 2012 RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards. The Gold award will be received by HSE (NK) TL Abdullah Al-Abdul Salam at a ceremony to be held in Birmingham, UK, on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Established in 1956, the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Occupational Health and Safety Awards program is the largest and longest-running program of its kind in the UK. It recognizes commitment to accident prevention and health safety and is open to businesses and organizations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. In addition to analyzing accident records, RoSPA also considers entrants overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement. 4 David Rawlins, awards manager at RoSPA, a charity with a 95-year history, said, The RoSPA Awards program provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and encourages other organizations to raise their standards of accident prevention and health safety. KOC Wins PMI Project of the Year Award In an award ceremony recently organized at the Boubyan Club in Salwa, the Board of Directors of the Project Management Institute Arabian Gulf Chapter (PMI-AGC) & KPC Community of Project Management presented the Project of the Year Award to Kuwait Oil Company. On behalf of KOC C&MD Sami Al-Rushaid, the Manager of Support Services, Waleed Al-Shuaib, received the award from the President of PMI-AGC, Hashim Al-Refai, in recognition of the Company s project - Rehabilitation of 32 HP Gas Pipeline from BS-150 to GCMB Manifold - as one of the 10 best projects shortlisted by PMI-USA on a global basis for the Project of the Year Award. The project was implemented on schedule and below budget by the General Projects Team of the Support Services Group using the best project management practices. Al-Shuaib was also presented with a certificate of appreciation by Al-Refai, while TL (General Projects) Khaled Al-Ahmad spoke about the project and highlighted the challenges faced during its execution. Senior Projects Engineer Haithem Abou-Ghaith and Project Engineer K.P. Sharma also attended the function. KOC Announces Launch of e-library Al-Nouri: World-class Digital Resource Collection Now Available The KOC Central Library Steering Committee recently announced the launch of the e-library under the auspices of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC). Chairman of KOC Central Library Steering Committee, who is also Manager of Corporate Information Technology, Hesham Al-Nouri, explained that the e-library provides access to a world-class digital resource collection that serves a variety of end users that range from researchers to students. He added that access from within the K Companies has been set up via IP Authentication, and that employees can access the library from the outside with a username and password after registration within their respective K Company. KOC Hosts 3 rd SPE GCC Young Professionals Contest DMD (WK) Capt. Ahmad Al-Rasheed recently highlighted the importance of the involvement in SPE and the platform that SPE provides for young professionals to interact with engineers and geoscientists from the technical community. Capt. Al-Rasheed made these remarks during his opening speech at the 3rd SPE GCC Young Professional Paper Contest recently held at the KOC Hubara Assembly Hall in Ahmadi. Eight abstracts were selected for the contest which covered a wide range of technical disciplines from drilling and completions to geosciences and reservoir engineering. The presenters then took questions from the judging committee, which was composed of local industry experts. The presentation contest was attended by members from various organizations throughout the GCC. The three best presenters were awarded the SPE Kuwait Section recognition plaques. The guests from the GCC later visited the KOC Display Center and Kuwait Integrated Digital Fields project. The group of young professionals from SPE-Kuwait continues to grow and expand, and it has conducted a number of social and technical events in order to provide networking, early career-development and professional-growth opportunities for it members. SPWLA Kuwait Holds Fourth Monthly Meeting The Kuwait Chapter of the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) recently held their fourth monthly meeting where Thomas Glowig, a Geoscience Advisor at Baker Hughes Geoscience in Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, delivered a presentation titled A New Multi Laterolog Tool for Improved Petrophysical Models A Case History in the Phiops Field of Egypt. Glowig stated that Multi Laterolog is a newly developed array laterolog logging device based on the Dual Laterolog principle, consisting of four independent focused measurements of differing depths of investigation with high vertical resolution. Advantages of the new Multi Laterolog logging tool and advanced processing principles in combination with other wireline logging tools like the Formation Resistivity Imager were illustrated by an example from the Phiops Field in Egypt. The meeting was attended by a host of petrophysicists and engineers representing various oil companies in Kuwait. At the conclusion of the presentation, SPWLA Kuwait Chapter President, Salem Al- Sabea, thanked Glowig and the audience for attending the event. He then presented Glowig with a gift as a token of appreciation for participating. KOC Hosts 7th Travel & Tourism Exhibition Exclusive Offers for Oil Sector Employees KOC recently organized its 7th Tourism & Travel Exhibition at the Unity Center Hall in Ahmadi. Ahmadi Services Group Manager, Mustafa Megdad, said that the three day exhibition falls in line with KOC s interest in providing its employees with the best travel offers, especially with the summer and travel seasons shortly ahead.
