Are you familiar with IED Madrid? The IED Madrid is a Higher Centre for Design that belongs to the IED Group, an international network which emerged in Italy in 1966 and is now comprised of 11 schools in Italy, Spain and Brazil. With a comprehensive training programme in the areas of fashion design, interior design, product design, visual arts and communications, and three spaces in the Madrid city centre, it is the largest design campus in Madrid. Our experience spans in 50 years, and has led to an innovative and unique academic model which trains design professionals who can adapt to a society which is constantly changing.
Why study at a Higher Education Design Centre? Our DNA Our differential value is that we are an art school specializing in teaching design, and not a general university in which all types of disciplines are offered. Training at the IED Madrid means living with all branches of design: product, interior, photography, fashion, graphic, style, video games, illustration in an international environment with a global vision of design. Fab Lab We boast a Fab Lab research lab, which is part of the Fab Labs network of the Fab Foundation promoted by MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and integrated within the framework of the new IED Innovation Lab, an innovative centre in which to rethink the relationship between knowledge, enterprise and technology. It is open to students and professionals and also functions as a coworking area. Awards and honours We accumulate many years of experience participating in national and international design competitions and festivals, a fundamental tool in our approach to the professional world, which provides solidity and identity to the portfolios of our designers. Educational and technological partners We are an Authorized Apple Training Centre and we have licences from Adobe and WGSN Insight. In addition, we promote relations between students and companies through different professorships, associations of designers, agreements with universities and design centres worldwide, as well as a solid committee of international experts who support our teaching. We offer spaces equipped with Wacom graphics tablets and the latest machinery and cutting-edge laser technology, thanks to Trotec. Faculty Our teachers are recognized professionals and qualified technicians who are professionally active and who teach a specific methodology that defines our DNA. This contact is an opportunity for students to expand their network and benefit their future career.

Why you should study a Foundation Course in Graphic Design and Illustration? Methodology The course uses a methodology based on professional activities, so that, around a projectual core, a number of key subjects are developed in this contemporary design and illustration training. This structure makes it possible to learn by designing, and to train our students in design processes and cuttingedge digital and communication tools applied to graphic design. Additionally, each project is led by important working professionals, who guide our students through the design process and the methodology of a real illustration project. The teaching style of the course is mainly practical. The theoretical contents acquired are applied using experimentation and active participation. Thus, in parallel with the theory and technique, experimentation and design workshops are developed. The course is structured in three blocks spread over two semesters: 1. Design and Creativity Theoretical and practical knowledge of the foundations and references related to design, colour, form, visual and structural languages. 2. Project Throughout the course projects and workshops will be carried out relating to space, the user and the experience, in which knowledge acquired in other subjects comes together. The projects are exercises for greater conceptual, technical and detail development, unlike the workshops, which are more intensive, creative and experimental. 3. Communication Communication is the most important tool for transmitting an idea and explaining a project. It is for this reason that it is so important to teach the tools and certain techniques needed to represent and communicate the graphic design and illustration.

Didactic Program Foundation Course 1 Didactic Program Foundation Course 1 Foundations of design. Analysis Collecting, analysing, synthesising and managing information in order to assess and develop ideas and arguments that establish relationships between formal language, symbolic language and specific functionality. Basic knowledge of structures, shapes, colour, space and volume from a multidisciplinary approach. Foundations of design. Ideation Using appropriate tools to search for one s own creative identity and acquiring the theoretical and methodological keys in order to develop creativity in a space for research and experimentation. Drawing. Representation Understanding our environment and representing it through different plastic techniques and expressive resources. Shape, colour, light, space and movement will be represented. Drawing. Communication Methodology of drawing as a language of communication to transmit information and ideas with maximum effectiveness and expressiveness through reflections, exercises of observation and analysis of the structure of things. Various techniques for spatial representation will be used together with other mechanisms appropriate to the objective. Digital Technology Addressing the exercise of visual design from the perspective of the technologies and tools used in computer-generated design, using techniques of digital image editing (Adobe Photoshop) and vector drawing and editing (Adobe Illustrator). Systems of Representation Studying drawing as a set of tools for thought, process and representation that are fundamental for the visual communicator, inviting students to address the different uses of drawing from a twofold theoretical and technical perspective. Volume Mastering basic volumetric concepts, processes and techniques. First introduction to building models and mock-ups, developing creative capacity, volume and spatial conception. Learning the expressive dimension of materials. Introduction to the 3D digital model. Colour Introducing students both theoretically and practically to the science of the perception of colour, its behaviour, the understanding of its language and an analysis of its expressive capacity. Importance of colour and its relationship within the scope of design. Theory and History of Art Reviewing the fundamental milestones of the different artistic, architectural and design trends, from Romanticism up to the start of World War II. Analysis of the most important social issues in order to study the response to such issues from different formal languages. Eco-design Introducing sustainability through a series of current global issues resulting from the triple crisis (economic, social, environmental) and reviewing sustainability indicators in order to reach the concept of sustainable development. Scientific Foundations of Design Introduction to web technology through theoretical-practical exercises. Analysing the context of digital design with respect to new devices: adaptive design, managers, templates. Typography Developing students typographical sensitivity and making them understand its importance in visual communication. Providing students with resources to create typographic solutions that are appropriate to the project s objectives, giving them the keys to use the expressive potential of typography. Graphic Digital Technology Delving into the practical and technical knowledge of research, conceptualisation and graphic production for different media and areas of graphic creation, focusing the teaching content on current technologies applied to the practice of design. Theory of Image and Communication Undertaking communicative messages, both text and image-based, analysing the influence of technology on building a visual image, discovering the channels that are used to support this type of communication. Reflecting on the relationship between image, representation, culture and politics in the context of contemporary societies.
experimental projects Foundation Course in Graphic Design and Illustration Creativity for Mincho mag by the students
Drawing and space Experimental materials Gaining the skills necessary to deal with contemporary drawing in these dimensions: applying the drawing on surfaces, scenography, large format and adapted to constructions. Mastering the different techniques and materials not normally associated with classic illustration: all over prints, ceramics, 3D printing, origami, laser cutting for object-based results.
Experimental print Digital illustration Combining the purely graphic design language (typography) and the illustrated book format, students will use the printing workshop to learn how to bind and the different techniques covered in the printing workshop: risography, letterpress printing, silk-screen printing and embossing. Delving into the possibilities of interactive digital illustration, experimental methods will be proposed in different media, which will be used to understand the narrative dimensions of illustration: from basic animation techniques to portfolios linked to new technologies.
