A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF SILKSCREEN PRINTS Arthouse Gallery Thurs April 18 Sat May 11 Arthouse Gallery is delighted to present this unique and iconic series of limited edition silkscreen prints by Charles Blackman, regarded as one of Australia s most original and significant figurative artists. This exhibition marks an important occasion as it is the first time that all four superb print suites, Blackman s Gardens, Schoolgirls, Girls and Flowers, and 70th Birthday Celebration will be displayed in a major exhibition. The wonderful, dream-like imagery of Blackmans Alice in Wonderland series and the intimate sense of tenderness and innocence of his acclaimed Schoolgirl series have been captured in these print suite portfolios. His familiar subjects: women, young girls and cats appear in windows and doorways, and in enchanted gardens, demonstrating his power to make a single image - sometimes sparse, sometimes austere - strong in power and suggestion. These collections of prints are inspired by some of Blackman s greatest and most iconic works painted over the last 5 decades. The images remain so powerful and relevant to the world today. Ali Yeldham These four rare collections of prints were printed in the 1990 s and early 2000 s in collaboration between Charles Blackman and Master Printmaker Michelle Perry. The Blackman Trust has made available from their collection, a small number of the limited-edition complete print suite portfolios and individual original pieces, to be sold in this exhibition. This is a great opportunity to add these remarkable works by one of Australia s most popular and acclaimed artists to your collection.

The Schoolgirls were Charles Blackman s most iconic series of paintings. Created early in his painting life (1953/54) they were to become his first haunting series that forever marked the birth of his true genius. His schoolgirls were the first paintings in Australia to brilliantly give form to what is essentially an invisible emotion. Uniformed schoolgirls, ordered and regimented, placed in urban settings with menacing overtones were the vehicles through which Blackman explored the themes of vulnerability and emotion, combined with the wonderment and fantasy of Childhood. For him they were obsessive images with a certain ambiguity. The emphasis was psychological with an inner, emotive strength. The contrast of line and shadow, innocence, playfulness and menace were all portrayed with an acute graphic quality that is synonymous with the greatness of Charles Blackman. BLACKMAN SCHOOLGIRLS is a suite of five silkscreen prints limited to an edition of 75 plus artist proof. The suite was conceived and published by Nadine Amadio & Charles Blackman & was printed by Michelle Perry at Marnling Press, Sydney, & bound in solander boxes handmade by Wayne Stock. The paper used throughout is Velin Arches, 270 gsm & the paper size is 75 x 105cm. This collection of five iconic images by Charles Blackman was translated into stunning suites of silkscreen prints by artist printmaker Michelle Perry at Marnling Press, Sydney in 1998. The portfolio was conceived and published by Nadine Amadio, together with Charles Blackman, as a celebration of his 70th birthday and an homage to his lifetime in Australian art. Unlike any gardens in our daily life, the gardens painted by Charles Blackman are the lost domains of his childhood and their flowers are the fruits of his imagination. His companion is often a white cat or perhaps the white cat is Blackman himself, in yet another guise. BLACKMAN S GARDENS is a suite of six screenprints limited to an edition of 80 plus artist s proofs. The suite was conceived and published by Charles Blackman and Nadine Amadio. Girls & Flowers are two of the symbols that Blackman has always used to express the feminine in his world of images. His haunting and enchanting images of women and girls absorbed in daydreams or games have an enduring appeal. This collection includes images which have been inspired by some of Blackmans most celebrated paintings from the Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series. Young girls and women, appear in windows and doorways and in enchanted gardens. He probes the delicate world of human relationships and speaks tenderly of loss of innocence, love and grief and the joy of dreams and memories.
