Needle nd presser foot section Needle threder (for s equipped with the needle threder) (pge 26) Buttonhole lever Lower the uttonhole lever when sewing uttonholes nd r tcks. c Presser foot holder The presser foot is instlled onto the presser foot holder. d Presser foot holder screw Use the presser foot holder screw to hold the presser foot holder in plce. Opertion uttons e Presser foot The presser foot pplies pressure consistently on the fric s the sewing tkes plce. Attch the pproprite presser foot for the selected stitching. f Needle plte cover relese Use when removing the needle plte cover. g Needle plte cover Remove the needle plte cover to clen the rce. h Feed dogs The feed dogs feed the fric in the sewing direction. i Quick-set oin (for s equipped with the quickset oin) You cn strt sewing without pulling up the oin thred. j Boin cover Open the oin cover to set the oin. k Needle plte The needle plte is mrked with guides for sewing stright sems. l Needle r thred guide Pss the upper thred through the needle r thred guide. m Presser foot lever Rise nd lower the presser foot lever to rise nd lower the presser foot. n Needle clmp screw Use the needle clmp screw to hold the needle in plce. The opertion uttons help you to esily perform vrious sic sewing mchine opertions. The opertion uttons differ depending on the sewing mchine. Reverse/reinforcement stitch utton Press the reverse/reinforcement stitch utton to sew reverse stitches. Reverse stitches re sewn y keeping the utton pressed down to sew in the opposite direction. For detils, refer to Sewing reinforcement stitches (pge 40). Buttons provided on some s Strt/stop utton (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton) Press the strt/stop utton to strt or stop sewing. The mchine sews t slow speed t the eginning of sewing while the utton is depressed. When sewing is stopped, the needle is lowered in the fric. For detils, refer to Strting to sew (pge 39). c Needle position utton (for s equipped with the needle position utton) Press the needle position utton to rise or lower the needle. Be sure to rise the needle efore threding the needle. Use this utton to chnge the sewing direction or for detiled sewing in smll res. Pressing the utton twice sews one stitch. d Sewing speed controller (for s equipped with the sewing speed controller) Slide the sewing speed controller to djust the sewing speed. 9

KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Opertion pnel The opertion pnel, locted on the front of the sewing mchine, llows you to select stitch nd specify how the stitch will e sewn. The opertion pnel differs depending on the sewing mchine. Spool pin As shown, press down on the spool pin lever with your finger to rise the spool pin. LCD (liquid crystl disply) The numer of the selected stitch (), the presser foot type to e used (2), the stitch length (mm) (3), nd the stitch width (mm) (4) re displyed here. Stitch selection keys Press the stitch selection keys, nd then select the numer for the stitch tht you wish to use. For detils, refer to Selecting stitch (pge 37). c Stitch length djustment key Press this key to djust the stitch length. Instlling the spool pin If the spool pin hs een removed from the mchine, insert the t on the spool pin into the hole on the ck of the mchine, s shown. Foot controller Insert the foot controller plug into its jck/socket on the rer side of the sewing mchine. Sewing speed controller (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton) Slide the sewing speed controller to the left or right to select the desired sewing speed. Slide the sewing speed controller to the left to sew t slower speed, or slide the speed controller to the right to sew t fster speed. Foot controller jck/socket When connecting the foot controller, e sure to turn off the sewing mchine in order to prevent the mchine from ccidentlly eing strted. When you press the foot controller down lightly, the mchine will run t low speed. When you press hrder, the mchine s speed will increse. When you tke your foot off the foot controller, the mchine will stop. Slower Sewing speed controller The speed set using the sewing speed controller is the foot controller s mximum sewing speed. Chnging the needle stop position rmlly, the sewing mchine is set to leve the needle in the fric when sewing is stopped. Insted, the mchine cn e set to leve the needle rised when sewing is stopped. Turn off the sewing mchine. You should mke sure tht nothing is plced on the foot controller when the mchine is not in use. Fster Do not llow pieces of cloth nd dust to uild up on the foot controller. Doing so could cuse fire or n electric shock. Hold down the side of (stitch selection key) on the left nd turn on the sewing mchine. Then stop the mchine. te If the sewing mchine is to e operted using the foot controller, connect the foot controller efore turning on the mchine. When the foot controller is plugged in, the strt/stop utton cnnot e used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). te Mke sure tht the thred is pulled s fr s possile into the pretension disk, otherwise the oin my not e wound clenly. Put the oin onto the oin winder shft h nd slide the oin winder shft to the right. Turn the oin clockwise, y hnd, until the spring on the shft slides into the notch in the oin. Mke sure to pull out 7 to 0 cm (2-3/4 to 3-5/6 inches) of thred from the hole on the oin. Trim the excess thred ove the oin. k Mke sure you follow the instructions crefully. While holding the thred tht wrps round the pre-tension disk with your left hnd, use your right hnd to wind the free end of the thred clockwise round the oin five or six times. 8

e Pull the thred to the right nd pss it through the slit in the oin winder set. j Cut the thred, slide the oin winder shft to the left, nd then remove the oin from the shft. Replce the cover so tht the end of the thred comes out from the left side of the cover (s shown y the line in the digrm). For s equipped with the quick-set oin Memo The direction for feeding the oin thred is indicted y mrks on the needle plte cover. Be sure to thred the mchine s indicted. T Mke sure you set the oin so the thred unrolls in the right direction. If the thred unrolls in the wrong direction, it my cuse the thred tension to e incorrect or rek the needle. 2

Thred with thickness of 30/20 or thicker cnnot e used with the needle threder. The needle threder cnnot e used with the wing needle or the twin needle. If the needle threder cnnot e used, refer to Upper threding (pge 23). Follow steps through m of the procedure in Upper threding to thred the mchine to the needle r thred guide. (If the needle clmp screw is loosened too much, the needle clmp (which holds the needle) my fll off. Therefore, do not loosen the needle clmp screw too much.) KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Sewing with the twin needle We hve designed your mchine so you cn sew with this needle nd two top threds. You cn use the sme color or two different colors of thred for mking decortive stitches. For detils on the stitches tht cn e sewn with the twin needle, refer to STITCH SETTINGS (pge 79). Twin needle Extr spool pin Use only twin needles tht hve een mde for this mchine (prt code: 3096-2). Other needles could rek, nd dmge the mchine. Do not sew with ent needles. The needle could rek nd injure you. You cn not use the needle threder to thred the twin needle. Insted, thred the twin needle y hnd, from front to ck. Using the needle threder my dmge the mchine. When using the twin needle, e sure to select n pproprite stitch, otherwise the needle my rek or the mchine my e dmged. Select stitch width of 5.0 mm (3/6 inch) or less, otherwise the needle my rek or the mchine my e dmged. c Instll the twin needle. For detils on instlling needle, refer to Replcing the needle (pge 30). Thred the upper thred for the left needle. For detils, refer to steps through l of Upper threding (pge 23). Mnully thred the left needle with the upper thred. Pss the thred through the eye of the needle from the front to the ck. d Insert the extr spool pin onto the end of the oin winder shft. After djusting the stitch width, slowly turn the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) nd check tht the needle does not touch the presser foot. If this occurs, increse the stitch length. For detils on djusting the stitch length, refer to Adjusting the stitch length nd width (pge 38). Turn on the sewing mchine. i When chnging the sewing direction, e sure to rise the needle from the fric, nd then rise the presser foot lever nd turn the fric. Otherwise the needle my rek or the mchine my e dmged. Do not try turning the fric with the twin needle left down in the fric, otherwise the needle my rek or the mchine my e dmged. 33

KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE REPLACING THE PRESSER FOOT Alwys turn off the power efore you chnge the presser foot. If you leve the power on nd step on the controller, the mchine will strt nd you my e injured. Alwys use the correct presser foot for the stitch pttern you hve chosen. If you use the wrong presser foot, the needle my strike the presser foot nd end or rek, nd my cuse injury. Only use presser feet tht hve een designed to e used with this mchine. Using other ny presser feet my cuse n ccident or injury. Replcing the presser foot d Press the lck utton t the ck of the presser foot holder to relese the presser foot. Replce the presser foot s descried elow. Rise the needle y turning the hndwheel towrd you (counterclockwise) so tht the mrk on the wheel points up. (With s equipped with (needle position utton), rise the needle y pressing once or twice.) Blck utton Presser foot holder Mrk or Needle position utton e Plce different presser foot elow the holder so tht the presser foot pin is ligned with the shnk in the holder. Position the presser foot so the letter indicting the presser foot type (J, A, etc.) is positioned to e red. If the sewing mchine hs een turned on, turn it off. Before replcing the presser foot, e sure to turn off the sewing mchine, otherwise injuries my occur if the foot controller or the strt/stop utton is ccidentlly pressed nd the mchine strts sewing.
