ChristmasTime Is Here y Vince Guaraldi Arranged for Brass Quintet y Snooy
Vince Guaraldi Like most so-called overnight successes Vincent Anthony Guaraldi -- who forever descried himself as "a reformed oogie-woogie iano layer" -- worked hard for his ig reak. The man eventually dued "Dr. unk" y his comatriots was orn in San rancisco on uly 17 1928; he graduated from Lincoln High School and then San rancisco State College. Guaraldi egan erforming while in college haunting sessions at the Black Hawk and ackson's Nook sometimes with the Chuy ackson/bill Harris and other times in comos with Sonny Criss and Bill Harris. He layed weddings high school concerts and countless other small-otatoes gigs. His first serious ooking came at the Black Hawk when he worked as an intermission ianist... filling in for the legendary Art Tatum. "It was more than scary" Guaraldi later recalled. "I came close to giving u the instrument and I wouldn't have een the first after working with Tatum". Guaraldi's first recorded work can e heard on "Virathare" a 195 release y the Cal Tader Trio. Guaraldi then avoided studios for the next few years referring to further hone his talents in the often unforgiving atmoshere of San rancisco's eatnik clu scene. In 1955 he ut together his own trio -- longtime friend Eddie Duran on guitar Dean Reilly on ass -- and tackled North Beach's ohemian hungry i clu. He also returned to studio work that year making his recorded deut as grou leader although with different ersonnel: ohn Markham (drums) Eugene Wright (ass) and erry Dodgion (alto sax). What soon came to e recognized as the "Guaraldi sound" however resulted from several recording sessions with his hungry i uddies. The original Vince Guaraldi Trio with Duran and Reilly can e heard on two releases: "The Vince Guaraldi Trio" (1956) and "A lower is a Lonesome Thing" (1957) The late 50s were a usy time. Aside from studio sessions with Conte Candoli (two alums) rank Rosolino (one alum) and Cal Tader (at least ten alums) Guaraldi toured in 1956 with Woody Herman's third "Thundering Herd" relacing Nat ierce on iano for one season. Not too much later ust after midnight during 1958's first annual Monterey azz estival some 6000 raid ut y now quite tired azz fans came to their feet when The Cal Tader Quintet lew them away. Thanks in no small art to the "sound of surrise" from the feisty Guaraldi whose extended lues riffs literally had the crowd screaming for more Tader's quintet received an enthusiastic standing ovation. National rominence was ust around the corner. Insired y the 1959 rench/ortuguese film "Black Orheus" Guaraldi hit the studio with a new trio --
Aout the Arranger Snooy (not to e confused with Snoo Doggy Dog) the longtime faithful et eagle of Charlie Brown has had a varied career as a World War I lying Ace oreign Legionnaire Novelist (It was a dark and stormy night...) and hister; oe Cool. Snooy first made his aearance in the comic stri "eanuts" on Octoer 4 1950 two days after the stri remiered and was identified y name on Novemer 10. He was originally named "Sniffy" until Charles Shultz discovered that that name was already eing used y a different cometing comic stri. Snooy was a silent character for the first two years of his existence ut on May 27 1952 he veralized his thoughts to readers for the first time via a thought alloon. Curiously the first time a eagle was mentioned in the stri (on Decemer 5 1960) Snooy denied eing one. As Snooy dozed Charlie Brown arahrased Gertrude Stein: "Beagles on the grass alas." To this Snooy relied "I ain't no stuid eagle." Schulz summed u Snooy's character this way in a 1997 interview: "He has to retreat into his fanciful world in order to survive. Otherwise he leads kind of a dull miserale life. I don't envy dogs the lives they have to live." In site of leading the oring life of a dog Snooy still finds time for music arranging (a talent he has reviously ket out of the ulic view). Snooy first met the comoser Vince Guaraldi in 1965 while working on set of the TV secial "A Charlie Brown Christmas". A long and fruitful collaoration insued u until Guaraldi's death in 1976.
