Mississippi Valley Council - Popcorn Academy Lesson Plan Session Name: Popcorn Academy Duration: 45 minutes Learning Objectives: Utilize the principles of the Simple Sales Plan Practice a Take-Order Sales Pitch Know the Products available for sale Develop a list of prospects to sell to Set a sales goal Materials: Candy Copy of the Sales Sheet & Prize Sheet Circle 10 Plan Worksheet Blowups of Prize Sheets Blowups of Popcorn Product T-Shirts Handout of Script Pens 2-3 NERF Guns Blue Painter s Tape Spreadsheet to Capture Info (1 per Unit) Introduction (5 Min): Welcome to the Mississippi Valley Council Popcorn Academy! Today we will teach you how to sell Scouting and reach your popcorn goals. We are going to teach you the simple sales plan, practice knocking on doors, learn about the different types of popcorn, and help you set a goal! Let me introduce our staff today: <Introduce Staff> Let s start off with a game! Progressive Rock Paper Scissor Scouts will introduce themselves to another Scout and play Rock, Paper, Scissors for the best two out of three. The winner will evolve. The important aspect is the repetition of introducing themselves. Evolutions: 1) Egg hunched over 2) Chicken flapping arms and clucking 3) Dinosaur Arms over head and roaring 4) Enlightened Salesman Standing up straight asking if you want to support Scouting through Popcorn Simple Sales Plan (5 Min): There are five simple steps to selling Popcorn. I m going to shout them out and I want you to repeat them! Now let s test your memory! <Spend 2-4 minutes quizzing the Scouts and repeating the steps> Now we re going to break you into two groups. Half of you are going to learn about the different types of Popcorn and the other half are going to learn and practice a sales pitch. In ten minutes, we will switch so everyone can learn each skill.

Breakouts (20 Min): Take Order Breakout 10 Minutes OK, Scouts! Let s review the Simple Sales Plan. Let s shout it together and try to be louder than the other group! All together Great job! Now what are we going to sell? It s not popcorn! We re selling Scouting! Whether it s a camp, an activity, an adventure, or gadget. Think of the Popcorn as a reward for helping you achieve your goal. There are lots of people who you can ask to support you. To help you think of some, here s the Circle 10 plan. Take a moment to circle 10 people on this list you might want to sell to? Feel free to circle more than 10. Can you think of anyone else you want to sell to? Write their name at the bottom of the paper so you don t forget to ask them later. If your parents are here, they can help! Excellent! Now that we have our list made, we need to do a few more things to prepare. First we will need to make sure we are dressed and ready to go. What do we wear while we sell Popcorn? That s right, your Uniform and a Smile. Which point of the Simple Sales plan is that? Correct! #1. Here s a good Script: Hi, my name is and I am a Scout in Pack/Troop. I am selling delicious Trail s End popcorn to help fund. We have many great flavors such as Chocolatey Triple Delight and White Cheddar Cheese. You can see pictures here on the order form. My favorite is. Would you like to support my Scouting activities? Thank you! Would anybody like to come up and try? <Entertain one good Scout> Let s now turn to your neighbor and read through the script. Don t forget to introduce yourself before you start! Once you ve practiced, then switch so your partner gets a try too. <If time permits, have them change partners and practice again> Which points of the Simple Sales Plan did we just learn? That s right #2 (Sell Scouting) and #3 (Know what you re going to say). Let s review that simple sales plan one more time!

Product Knowledge/Online Sales Breakout 12 Minutes OK, Scouts! Let s review the Simple Sales Plan. Let s show it together and try to be louder than the other group! All together Great Job! Now, before you can sell Scouting and Popcorn, you need to know what we are selling! Around the room, we have all of the Products we are going to sell this year. Let s play a game where we test your knowledge of the Popcorn. I tell you something about a Product, and you need to stand in front of the Poster that has that quality. For example, if I ask which product contains nuts, you would stand in front of the Caramel Corn with Nuts. Sound easy? Let s play! Stand in front of a popcorn for people who like to make popcorn from scratch. Stand in front of a popcorn that is both sweet and salty. (2 answers) Stand in front of a popcorn with more buttery flavor than ever before. Stand in front of a popcorn with a light butter flavor. Stand in front of a popcorn that comes in a tin. Stand in front of a popcorn that is loaded with almonds, cashews, and pecans. Stand in front of a popcorn that has a rich white cheddar cheese flavor. Stand in front of a popcorn that has both dark chocolate and white chocolate. Stand in front of a popcorn that has multiple flavors in one box. Stand in front of a popcorn that needs to be microwaved (3 answers). Stand in front of a popcorn that is a collector box (2 answers). How many of you have ever sold Popcorn online? I bet you didn t even know you could do it. All you need to do is create an account on sell.trails-end.com with your parent or guardian and you are on your way. You simply put in the e-mail addresses, write a personal note, and hit the send button! If you sell $100 in Popcorn online, we will even give you a neckerchief slide! Instructions on how to set up your account are on your order form Let s review that simple sales plan one more time! Goal Setting (7 Min): Welcome back everyone. Did you practice your sales script? Did you learn about the different types of Popcorn? Do you have a list of people you can ask to buy Popcorn? Excellent! There s just one last skill that we will teach you today: How to set a goal! One these posters, you can see our Prizes for 2015. Take a gun and take aim and fire at the prize that you like best. Please pick one and tell the staff member so we can write down your Goal. <Set up a small target and allow the Scouts to shoot the NERF gun 2-3 times> Did you like firing the gun? You can get this gun if you sell $750 in Popcorn this year!

Graduation (4 Min): Congratulations Scouts on completing the requirements to graduate the Popcorn Academy on this day of in the year 2015. It is my pleasure to present you with a t-shirt. When your name is called, please come forward! As we close this commencement, we would like to congratulate you on behalf of the Mississippi Valley Council and wish you the best of luck in hitting your sales goal. Please join me one last time in exclaiming the simple sales plan, all together:
