QU: What other unconventional methods of fossil fuel extraction are there? AIM: To explain the impacts of developing shale and deep water sources on a social and environmental level. ST: What are the implications of tar sands oil extraction on a - Terrestrial carbon? b - Atmospheric carbon? Boreal Forest Alberta, Canada Alberta Tar Sands
Context As we start to run out of conventional sources of oil and gas, we start turning to less conventional sources such as fracking and tar sands. These are dirtier sources of oil and gas that we would not have bothered with 20 years ago, illustrating our continued dependence on fossil fuels as the norm.
So what is Fracking? Task: 1. Watch the clip. Then create a flow diagram of the process using your memory and the diagram on the left alone. (2 mins) EXT: Why do you think fracking is a relatively recent development? Think technology and increasing scarcity of coal, oil and gas. Fracking is a way forward to increase energy security
USA output from fracking has led to inceased output from 8ma barrels a day to 12ma. Fracking is a huge game changer! Unlike conventional sources production from shale oil and gas can fall off dramatically. Can the USA keep this up? This undermines the ability of OPEC to fix prices A no-brainer for energy security - but why is it controversial?

HOMEWORK: DEEP WATER OIL EXTRACTION BRAZIL 1 Read the article following this page or read from the website at: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng interactive/2015/jun/25/brazils gamble on deepwater oil guanabara bay 2 Create and complete the same grid as you used for fracking in the USA in lesson. 4 Exam question Assess the extraction of unconventional fossil fuels in meeting global energy demands and improving energy security (20) Start by defining unconventional sources and energy security. Assess means weigh up arguments. In this case what is good/bad about them. Consider the impacts on players such as Governments, TNC s, Pressure groups, Affected Communities. Also think global/national scale and wider carbon cycle. Support with examples eg, Alberta tar sands, Marcellus shale and deep water oil. Conclude: Are unconventional sources the best way of meeting demand and improving energy security?
Deepwater Brazil Deepwater Brazil is a hotbed of activity with reserves estimated at 31 billion BOE. Most of this will come from deepwater where Petrobras and other key operators are relying on companies like Halliburton. We are all working closely together to pioneer the use of innovative technology required to achieve oil production from tremendous water depths, spurred by the recently discovered giant pre salt fields. These fields are among the most complex ever drilled located in 7,000 ft of water with reservoirs buried underneath salt layers up to 6,500 ft thick. To help develop these fields, Halliburton is building a Technology Center in Rio De Janeiro. It will become a deepwater center of expertise for Halliburton worldwide and work with a leading Brazilian university to develop efficient, new technologies for deepwater. Many discoveries in Brazil and most current production come from post salt reservoirs (above the salt layer). Whether it s a pre or post salt target, the keys to expediting exploration and development in Brazil are found in the long term integration of a vast range of technology and expertise. Leveraging service capabilities across multiple disciplines ensures the fit for purpose solutions required in Brazil's deepwater. Deepwater Brazil At Halliburton, we are committed to the ongoing development of deepwater prospects in Brazil's post and emerging pre salt plays. Halliburton s deepwater Brazil experience spans hundreds of wells, with millions of feet drilled. By using our growing in country infrastructure and resources, Halliburton continues to provide the full range of services necessary for deepwater exploration, development and production. We work closely with our customers in Brazil to select the right technologies and recommend the best solutions for their challenging deepwater environment. Our success in Brazil is driven by resourceful and experienced people, effective job planning and execution, and our commitment to operational excellence and safety at all levels. More detailed information about the challenges associated with Brazil's pre and post salt environments can be found by exploring these pages further.
