Mx-DMA NEWTEC MX-DMA SEAMLESS DYNAMIC BANDWIDTH ALLOCATION AT SCPC EFFICIENCY AWARD 2015 A patented efficient and dynamic multipleaccess scheme which enables operators to share satellite capacity over a group of satellite terminals transmitting to a central location. The Mx-DMA return technology adjusts the frequency plan transmission parameters for every terminal in the satellite network. Compared to SCPC DVB-S2 with 20% roll-off, it provides 50% bandwidth savings or doubles the number of customers per MHz. Compared to MF-TDMA 4CPM, it also provides 50% bandwidth savings. Both fixed rate and variable rate applications, ranging from as low as 32 kbps to 75 Mbps. The VLSNR modcods provide support for small antennas and mobile terminals. ADVANTAGES Eliminates the difficult choice of having to select either MF-TDMA or SCPC Maximum return efficiencies Dynamic bandwidth allocation on the fly Low jitter and delay Seamless operation with no packet loss Operators no longer need to dimension the return carrier plan Rain margin can be managed per network, instead of per carrier. Mx-DMA dynamically allocates capacity to carriers that need it Newtec s Mx-DMA is the return satellite technology which incorporates the best features of MF-TDMA and SCPC technologies, solving the difficult choice of having to select one or the other. The Mx-DMA return technology on the Newtec Dialog platform adjusts the frequency plan, the symbol rate, the modulation, coding and power in real-time for every terminal in the satellite network. These adjustments are based on the return traffic demand, the network Quality of Service (QoS) management and channel conditions for the terminal population in the network. Within the Mx-DMA return link, each carrier is assigned to only one terminal, achieving SCPClike maximum return efficiencies. At the same time, the flexibility of MF-TDMA can be maintained; it remains possible in Mx- DMA to allocate bandwidth on demand and in real-time. In other words, as the traffic demand for a remote terminal is changing, bandwidth will be allocated on the fly. If the traffic within the terminal becomes more important, extra bandwidth will auto-dynamically be assigned to the carrier inside the link based on QoS and priority rules. The entire operation is performed seamlessly without any data packet being lost. The implementation of Mx-DMA typically doubles the transponder throughput using the same bandwidth or alternatively reduces the required space segment capacity by 50%. The new technology also ensures low jitter and delay, making it perfect for applications like voice and streaming video. HighRes Coding NEWTEC HIGHRESCODING - HRC TM HIGHLY EFFICIENT RETURN WAVEFORM HRC is the high-efficiency/low-latency modulation and coding scheme that has been designed for Mx-DMA. It increases throughput or saves bandwidth in a satellite link. HRC maximizes the amount of bits that can be transmitted through a given satellite capacity. Its wide range of MODCODs provides the means to do this under varying satellite link conditions. The carrier sizing gives fine granularity and high range of traffic rates while the short block code minimizes the delay and jitter on the traffic. HRC provides a level of efficiency comparable to DVB-S2 short frame with a 5% roll-off factor while the block size is five times smaller than DVB-S2 short frames. Low-to-medium rate Satcom applications which are sensitive to latency, jitter and variable bandwidth conditions. The VLSNR MODCODs provide support for small antennas and mobile terminals. HRC TM, the innovative next-generation waveform, is typically suited to low-to-medium rate applications between 32 kbps and 75 Mbps. HRC provides a level of efficiency comparable to DVB-S2 with a 5% roll-off factor in order to get as many bits through the available bandwidth as possible. In contrast to DVB-S2, the HRC coding also handles low throughput speeds in SCPC mode without the harmful latency effects that could hamper voice traffic or video streaming services. HRC optimizes low-to-medium rate traffic and avoids latency over satellite by using short block codes. The high granularity of MODCOD choices (40 MODCODs, from QPSK up to 32APSK) provides the best modulation and coding per link. In combination with ACM the most efficient mode is selected automatically depending on the available bandwidth and instant satellite link conditions. 10 Additional MODCODs extend the operational range to Very Low SNR. ADVANTAGES A level of efficiency comparable to DVB-S2 Optimized for low and medium rate traffic Synchronous framing across terminals, for seamless carrier plan updates Small block size for minimum latency Low jitter and delay High MODCOD granularity 7

NEWTEC ACCELERATION & COMPRESSION TECHNOLOGIES A combined set of traffic enhancement technologies which speed up underlying communication protocols. Thanks to satellite communications, people all over the world can access the Internet. But due to the Internet s most common communication protocols (TCP and HTTP) being designed for terrestrial networks, without the right technology, the user experiences the influence on service level when used over satellite networks. Acceleration improves the user experience of Internet or enterprise applications while increasing satellite bandwidth efficiency at the same time by compressing the data sent over satellite. In order to avoid poor performance over satellite networks, for example slow download speed and web surfing, Newtec has developed the ideal solution: Acceleration & Compression. Thanks to a combined set of traffic enhancement technologies that speed up underlying communication protocols (TCP and HTTP), the user will have a better Quality of Experience (QoE) when using Internet or enterprise applications. Bandwidth savings of up to 20% on the forward and up to 90% on the return link. Trunking, Internet access and broadband VSAT applications. Acceleration & Compression IMPROVES THE USER EXPERIENCE OF INTERNET OR ENTERPRISE APPLICATIONS, WHILE INCREASING SATELLITE BANDWIDTH EFFICIENCY AT THE SAME TIME The TCP/IP optimization protocol stack (Enhanced TCP) enables full usage of the available satellite capacity instantly and at any time, even if the effective bandwidth changes dynamically as a result of Cross-Layer-Optimization. At the same time, the download speeds increase up to the maximum throughput possible according to the user s SLA. The HTTP acceleration speeds up end-users web application experience by up to 60%. This is achieved by combining interception, caching, scheduling and prefetching techniques at the same time. Even if several IP services be it a file download and web browsing share the same virtual circuit, the web surfing is fast and the download uses the remaining capacity. In addition, various compression techniques result in bandwidth savings of up to 20% on the ADVANTAGES Improves the user experience of Internet and enterprise applications Full and instant usage of the available satellite capacity Increase of download speed up to the maximum possible throughput Bandwidth savings of up to 20% on the forward and up to 90% on the return link forward and up to 90% on the return link. The integrated Payload Compression compresses and decompresses the TCP data on the fly if possible. The lightweight ETCP protocol headers save about 50% of bandwidth compared to TCP protocol headers. Finally, the aggregation of ETCP control data reduces the bandwidth need by up to 99% when compared to TCP or SCPS/TP control data. Clean Channel Technology NEWTEC CLEAN CHANNEL TECHNOLOGY IMPROVING DVB-S2 EFFICIENCY WITH SMALL ROLL-OFFS AND ADVANCED FILTERING TECHNOLOGY A combination of improved roll-offs (5%, 10%, 15%) for DVB-S2 and advanced filtering technologies to allow optimal carrier spacing. Improves satellite efficiency by up to 15% when compared to the DVB-S2 standard and ensures the modulator output spectral shape is better than competition (side lobes 60 db below carrier level). Increases efficiency by up to 15%. All multiple carriers per transponder scenarios. Also single carrier per transponder in case the service provider or network operator needs to optimize the carrier size. Clean Channel Technology further improves satellite efficiency by up to 15% compared to the current DVB-S2 standard for trunking, backhauling and government networks, as well as broadcast contribution. The first phase of Clean Channel Technology applies a smaller roll-off percentage than currently used in the DVB-S2 standard. In DVB-S2, the 20% and 25% roll-off percentages are common, which basically means these percentages need to be added to the desired bandwidth over satellite. Reducing these roll-offs to 5%, 10% and 15% results in a direct gain in bandwidth. Looking at the spectral image when implementing smaller roll-offs, the slope of the carrier becomes steeper when compared to DVB-S2 but still fits nicely in the allocated bandwidth. The second phase of Clean Channel Technology deals with noise levels (side lobes) on both sides of the carrier. These side lobes prevent satellite carriers being put close to each other. Applying advanced filter solutions such as Clean Channel Technology has an immediate effect on bandwidth savings as the spacing between carriers can be put as close as 1.05 times their symbol rates. Clean Channel Technology can be applied in satellite links with single carriers, multiple carriers or carriers sharing the same transponder with other providers. It allows you to do more with available bandwidth or cut OPEX costs. Newtec s customers will be able to immediately benefit from Clean Channel Technology as it is available as a software field upgrade on existing Newtec equipment. ADVANTAGES Do more with available bandwidth or cut OPEX costs Advanced filter technology Upgrade available on existing Newtec DVB-S2 equipment Available as option on new equipment Standard DVB-S2 Carrier Spacing Optimal Carrier Spacing Filtering away side lobes Carrier Spacing with Clean Channel Technology DVB-S2 Roll-off to 5% or 10% or 15% RO 20% RO 5% RO 20% RO 5% 10

Cross-Layer- Optimization NEWTEC CROSS-LAYER-OPTIMIZATION AUTOMATED END-TO-END OPTIMIZATION TECHNOLOGY BETWEEN THE RF AND THE IP LAYERS In Cross-Layer-Optimization twoway interactions between the RF, physical layer and the network/ip components are exploited to tailor available resources to match demand more closely. It is part of a wider traffic shaping process that ensures QoS and prioritization of applications and users, assuring maximum availability and usage of the network. Through Cross-Layer-Optimization, the satellite modulation and coding function provides real-time feedback to the shaping and QoS function on the available variable bandwidth due to ACM. In turn, this function provides real-time feedback to the Acceleration and Compression engine. This controls the rate of transmission of end-user applications, such as web browsing, so that they smoothly (i.e. without dropping data) follow the variable bandwidth. In an environment of variable satellite IP bandwidth, Cross-Layer-Optimization continuously fills the available satellite capacity, while following QoS rules, and avoids packet drops by controlling the rate at which end-user applications send data in real-time. Cross-Layer-Optimization allows operators to fully use the available satellite capacity while still offering flexible SLAs depending on the different customer requirements. The shortened response times and reduced file transfer durations also maximize the end-user QoE. Any satellite IP communication is applicable. ADVANTAGES Full use of available satellite capacity Maximized QoE 11

Equalink NEWTEC EQUALINK 3 PRE-DISTORTION COMPENSATING FILTER & AMPLIFIER EFFECTS A revolutionary linear and non-linear predistortion technology, implemented in the modulator. Mitigates linear and non-linear distortion effects. The latest Equalink version (Equalink 3) can also provide significant gain for Direct-to-Home (DTH) applications. For DTH applications: Additional data traffic of up to 15% in the same satellite capacity or a link margin improvement of up to 0.6 db. For professional applications: Similar efficiency gains and up to 4dB link margin improvement. Equalink 3 is Newtec s linear and non-linear pre-distortion technology. The newest version, available in Newtec s broadcast modulator/modem MDM6100 R2.6, provides breakthrough performance gains on DTH satellite links. Operators can increase the link margin of all settop boxes in the field by simply enabling Equalink 3 at the modulator side. Live satellite tests have demonstrated 0.4 db gain for QPSK 5/6 (10% throughput gain) and more than 0.6 db gain for 8PSK 5/6 (15% throughput gain). This extra link margin can be used to improve the coverage/availability or it can be used to increase the symbol rate in combination with a lower roll-off factor. In this way, it inserts up to 15% more TV channels in a DTH carrier. Equalink 3 is a set of advanced digital filters and algorithms implemented in the modulator. The linear filter compensates for group delay and frequency response imperfections of the satellite Input Multiplexer (IMUX), while the non-linear pre-correction compensates for the combined effect of matched filters and transponder Travelling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA) non-linearities (AM/AM and AM/PM conversions). Equalink 3 can be used in conjunction with any standard satellite receiver and is very easy to operate. All single-carrier per transponder scenarios. In particular, DTH carriers, professional distribution carriers and VSAT outbound carriers. ADVANTAGES Dramatically increases link margin of set-top boxes Up to 15% more throughput in DVB-S2 8PSK Automated calibration process, using Newtec demodulators to measure distortion and optimize equalization No pre-distortion Equalink 3 pre-distortion 12

Point&Play NEWTEC POINT&PLAY EASY AND ACCURATE ANTENNA INSTALLATION An innovative and easy-to-use selfinstallation solution for Newtec VSAT terminals which enables the end-user to accurately position the antenna towards the correct satellite without any support from professionally trained antenna installers. Point&Play allows the installer (be it a professional installer or the end-user) to easily position the antenna correctly by identifying the satellite and providing feedback on both signal quality and lock. Point&Play enables accurate pointing for non-skilled installers or end-users. Point&Play enables the installer (be it a professional installer or the end-user) to easily position the antenna correctly by identifying the satellite and providing feedback on both signal quality and lock. It comes in different types: Point&Play antenna pointing device: During the pointing phase, this battery powered device is connected to the TX cable and provides audio feedback regarding the installation status and signal strength. Integrated Point&Play ilnbs: The ILB222x family of Newtec Ka-band ilnbs contains an internal buzzer which has the same functionality as the antenna pointing device. Point&Play Terminal Installation App: The terminal installation app uses the smartphone to provide installation feedback to the user. The result is consistently accurate terminal installations with low adjacent satellite interference. This reduces the oprational cost. The decreased cost per terminal installation can give a competitive advantage. Pointing of Newtec Outdoor Units (ODUs), in combination with Newtec VSAT modems, such as the MDM2000 and MDM3000 series. ADVANTAGES Lowers the operational cost Differentiates and improves the competitiveness of the service provider Increases market penetration by creating more distribution channels Reduces risk of interference 13

NEWTEC FLEXACM END-TO-END SOLUTION OPTIMIZING SATELLITE CHANNELS SUFFERING FROM VARIABLE LINK CONDITIONS AWARD FlexACM is the innovative and awardwinning solution by Newtec for efficient satellite communications. The technology doubles throughput in satellite networks that suffer from variable link conditions both in the forward and return satellite channel. At the same time maximum service availability can be achieved in any fading condition (inclined orbit, weather, dust, interference) to keep mission-critical communications running at all times. FlexACM is the unique and market-proven end-to-end solution, combining a range of technologies to optimize satellite links in the most efficient way. FlexACM can be used in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint systems and in one-way (with terrestrial return channel), as well as two-way configurations (with the return channel also over satellite). Firstly, ACM, allows the network operator to automatically turn to more robust modulation in order to maintain the link service availability during fading conditions. Once the link conditions improve, the ACM system will immediately change to higher modulation coding without package drops and increase the data throughput to maximum levels again. By measuring distortion with NoDE and taking the measurements into account, rather than keeping a safety margin, the excess link margin is decreased, leading to higher throughput in the same bandwidth. Newtec s unique and market-proven end-to-end solution combines a set of technologies, such as ACM, Thin Margin Manager (ThiMM), Noise and Distortion Estimation (NoDE) and predictive tooling on upcoming variation, to bring the satellite link to full efficiency. The gain of FlexACM can range from 30% to 50% depending on the type of traffic and the satellite link conditions. ThiMM predicts link behavior so FlexACM can even be used at its fullest power in very rapidly changing link conditions, such as those experienced in Ka-band. FlexACM is the only system in the world that can guarantee Committed Information Rate (CIR) in a dynamic adaptive environment, even allowing multiplexing fixed rate E1 circuits with regular IP traffic. FlexACM is a cross-layer technology, where changes on the physical layer due to changing conditions ripple all the way up to the data network, assuring that the effect on traffic is handled in a controlled way and that the impact is reduced to an absolute minimum. All of the pieces individually contribute to optimizing the satellite IP link. But once put together these pieces bring the satellite link to full efficiency. End-to-end. Any IP related application over satellite suffering from variable link conditions due to the nature of the satellite (inclined orbit satellite), frequency band (Ka, Ku) or interference (rain fade, sun, shadowing effects). 14

FlexACM SITE 1 SITE 2 ADVANTAGES Doubles throughput Optimal availability Cuts OPEX costs Suitable for inclined orbit satellite operations End-to-end efficiency Proven Return on Investment (RoI) Accommodates a wide range of terminal sizes and business models on the same network Proven technology with a large installed base 15

CARRIER ID (DVB-CID) IDENTIFIES THE SOURCE OF AN INTERFERING CARRIER Carrier ID The DVB standard implementation of Carrier ID (DVB-CID) is a signal embedded into a video or data transmission path to correctly identify a carrier when it is causing interference in the satellite network. It allows satellite operators and end-users to identify the source of an interfering carrier. The gain of Carrier ID is an operational gain for satellite and network operators; a lot of time, effort and money are spent trying to identify interfering carriers (of which 90% is unintentional). Being able to rapidly pinpoint the source of the interferer will save a lot of work. With satellite interference becoming an increasing problem, Carrier Identification (CID) is an important part of the solution to mitigate carrier interference. CID is a signal embedded into a video or data transmission path. It allows satellite operators and endusers to identify the source of an interfering carrier. The transition to CID started on 1 January 2015 (WBU-ISOG Resolutions). The identifier contains mandatory information such as a 64-bit MAC address and a vendor serial number, as well as optional user configurable data including GPS coordinates, the carrier name and user contact coordinates. This information is injected into the carrier by the modulator at the uplink site. In order to lower the impact on the throughput over the satellite, the carrier ID information is spread below the noise floor of the carrier. The image depicts an instance of interference between two carriers and the location of the carrier ID info. Special measurement receivers are installed at the satellite operator facilities. Whenever interference occurs, these receivers can read out the contact information from the carrier and quickly point out the source of interference. Resolving the interference issue is, in most cases, only a phone call away. SIGNAL A + SIGNAL B + NOISE SIGNAL A + NOISE Any broadcast or data transmission application. Multistream NEWTEC MULTISTREAM ALLOWS USERS TO AGGREGATE A NUMBER OF INDEPENDENT TRANSPORT STREAMS OR IP STREAMS INTO ONE SATELLITE CARRIER Multistream is a main advantage of the DVB-S2 standard. Multistream is a main advantage of the DVB-S2 standard that allows users to aggregate a number of independent transport streams or IP streams into one satellite carrier in a fully transparent manner, maintaining the integrity of the original content. It allows users to aggregate a number of independent transport streams or IP streams into one satellite carrier in a fully transparent manner, maintaining the integrity of the original content. 12% bandwidth on top of the gain brought by DVB-S2. At the transmit side, the individual input streams are divided in User Packets. The User Packets of one stream are all part of baseband frames which have the same Input Stream Identifier (ISI) in their header. The baseband frames of all streams are merged and transmitted after encoding. At the receive side, streams are reconstructed by separation based upon the ISI values in the baseband headers. Primary Distribution of Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) and mobile TV over satellite. DSNG contributions where one or more video channels are combined with IP based services. ADVANTAGES No need for re-multiplexing at the towers 1-4 multiplexes distribution with only 1 Receiver (e.g. compared with 4 IRDs!) Less satellite bandwidth needed compared with DVB-S Distribution of multiple services (terrestrial TV, mobile TV, radio and IP) in a single carrier Ability to saturate the transponder and gain up to 12% bandwidth on top of the gain brought by DVB-S2 Single Frequency Network (SFN) compliant Lower number of frequencies necessary Fully interoperable, transparent and compliant with the DVB-S2 standard 17

DVB-S2X STANDARD NEW DVB-STANDARD ON BOARD NEWTEC PRODUCTS The DVB-S2X waveform is the DVB and ETSI approved standard which was launched in March 2014 as a successor to the DVB-S2 standard. DVB-S2X offers improved performance and features compared to DVB-S2 for professional applications such as contribution, digital satellite news gathering, DTH, VSAT, trunking, cellular backhaul and mobility. The technologies implemented in DVB-S2X range from lower roll-offs and higher modulation up to 256APSK to adding higher granularity, increasing the standard from 28 to 116 MODCODs. The efficiency technologies contributed by Newtec to the new DVB standard boost the satellite link up to 20% in DTH networks and 51% in other professional applications when compared to DVB-S2. When adding wideband to the equation, an extra 20% can be added to the total. These gains already exceed the results by proprietary systems available on the market today. The successor to the DVB-S2 standard is a combination of innovative technologies that improve overall efficiency over satellite links. In fact, we can identify 10 main innovations which make DVB-S2X a waveform standard capable of being maintained for years to come: 1. Smaller roll-offs 2. Advanced filtering of satellite carriers 3. Increased granularity in MODCODs 4. Higher order modulation: 64/128/256APSK support 5. Linear and non-linear MODCODs 6. Better implementation of MODCODs 7. Wideband support 8. Very low SNR support for mobile applications 9. Channel bonding 10. Additional standard scrambling sequences to mitigate co-channel-interference (CCI). The first seven innovations are part of the standard basic definition. The other implementations, such as very low SNR support for mobility applications, are addenda to the standard and applicable if the technology provider covers the dedicated application. The applications that will adapt quickly to the DVB-S2X standard are mainly trunking, broadcast contribution and exchange, backhauling and professional IP access networks, as well as applications within the government and defense market (ISR, MWR, disaster recovery). Multicast NEWTEC DATACASTING TECHNOLOGY EFFICIENT DISTRIBUTION TECHNOLOGY FOR CONTENT AND MEDIA Newtec datacasting technology (Multicast) allows the efficient distribution of content and media towards single (Unicast) or multiple customers at the same time in an efficient way over a satellite or terrestrial network. The Newtec Multicast distribution platform provides a reliable distribution of files, directory structures and data streams for various applications. Multicast allows content to be distributed to a large number of recipients with only one single transmission. The reliability of the data/multicasting service is enhanced by the software s partial retransmission capabilities. Multicasting and exchanging content towards remote sites and ships with Newtec s Datacasting Software will immediately result in important efficiency and OPEX gains. The Newtec Multicast technology is based on the following cornerstones: High transmission reliability thanks to transparent content fragmentation, stateof-the-art error correction algorithms and retransmission optimization. High bandwidth efficiency based on a flexible and dynamic multi sub-channel concept that shares bandwidth according to a priority scheme and a guaranteed bandwidth allocation mechanism. Reduced channel cost content owners can select the most cost-effective distribution and return channel for each receiver and, in case no feedback is required, the system also works without any return channel. Content protection assured by encryption algorithms, built-in conditional access and the support of hardware keys to ensure strict privacy. High degree of automation all transmission, content management and playout options are centrally managed from the server side and can be fully automated. CENTRAL CONTENT MANAGEMENT MWR UPLINK HUB WITH MULTI- CASTING EFFICIENT AND SECURE CONTENT DISTRIBUTION CONTENT RECEPTION AND PLAYOUT MULTICAST DISTRIBUTION (ENCRYPTED) OPTIMAL SATELLITE RETURN The Newtec Multicast technology can be used over a wide range of uni-directional and bi-directional communication networks INTERNET / PRIVATE NETWORK UNICAST DISTRIBUTION (ENCRYPTED) REMOTE OFFICES & EMBASSIES REMOTE BASE BROADCAST DIGITAL CINEMA OPTIMAL TERRESTRIAL RETURN VESSELS such as satellite connections, cable TV networks, xdsl and Internet. Bandwidth Cancellation BANDWIDTH CANCELLATION (BWC) UNRIVALLED CAPACITY GAIN THROUGH FULL DIGITAL PROCESSING Bandwidth Cancellation (BWC) is a technology which allows transmission of two carriers into the same leased satellite bandwidth. Bandwidth Cancellation is a technology built into Newtec modems which processes signals completely in the digital domain (rather than using the traditional analogue processing). This enables the use of several algorithms to significantly increase the cancellation performance, speed up synchronization and add several additional monitoring parameters for simplified operation. At the receive side, the cancellation mechanism will cancel out the modem s own uplink signal in order to be able to demodulate the desired carrier. A gain of up to 30% in space capacity can be achieved for symmetrical links. When an existing link is bandwidth limited (not using all available transponder power of the leased bandwidth) gains of up to 100% are possible. This saving enables considerable OPEX savings or deployment expansion by adding services within the same available bandwidth. The Bandwidth Cancellation algorithm coexists with other technologies, such as FlexACM and Intelligent AUPC, resulting in the most efficient usage of space capacity. A very high tolerance for carrier power density and symbol rate unbalance makes BWC a viable choice in almost any case. A high performance built-in equalizer enables cancellation at any carrier rate, ranging from a simple 1 Mbps circuit all the way up to a super high rate trunk with full transponder operation. Bandwidth Cancellation can be used in any point-to-point application, with the main usage in trunks and backhaul circuits. It can also be used to cancel the forward carrier in certain point-to-multipoint applications.
