Chapter 1: Sherrena Sherrena - Dealt with the tenants while her husband, Quentin, cleaned up the messes. (15) Bought two 15 passenger vans and started Prisoner Connections LLC. For $25-$50 per seat, they transport mothers, girlfriends and children to see their incarcerated loved ones upstate. (14) In 4 years, she owned 36 inner city units. She specialized in renting to the black poor. (13) Homeschooled her own son (12) [presumably because of the neighborhood in which they lived] Was a 4th grade teacher when she met Quentin. Had a daycare after teaching 8 years, then tried real-estate. (12) Owned a red Camaro, but visited tenants in a beige-and-brown 1993 Chevy Suburban, belonging to Quentin. Quentin - Sherrena s husband Worked as Sherrena s property manager and started buying properties of his own.
Chapter 1: Events Sherrena gives Lamar and Patrice eviction notices. They seem to understand each other s positions. Lamar tells Sherrena he was fixin the basement - meaning to clean it out / do work to lower the rent. Sherrena told him he should ve told her and not Quentin. (14) In a past incident, we learn how the house was being shut down because of tenants stealing electricity (15). We Energies called the DNS (Department of Neighborhood Services) who inspected the property looking for code violations. Because of this, Sherrena was out a few thousand dollars for electrical work and unpaid rent. She blamed herself for taking a chance on being helpful and feeling sorry for the mother trying to leave her abusive boyfriend. She rented to her even though she s been evicted 3 times in the past 2 years (16). Sherrena checked on a new tenant who moved in with partial rent and a security deposit. She says her baby is sick because of the cold (there was a hole in the window) but it was still warm out. She said she called the city. Sherrena knew the property wasn t up to code. She knew an inspector would come which would cost her a lot of money. She comes back 5 days later and evicts the tenant, bringing Quentin who has handcuffs, a baton, and mace in case of trouble (17-19)
Chapter 1 Summary Sherrena is the landlord for Lamar, Patrice, Luke, Eddy, and an unnamed mother (As far as we know. She may have more tenants). She was a school teacher for 8 years and married her husband, Quentin. She had to evict Lamar because he didn t pay rent for months and didn t do the work he said he would do to lower his rent. She evicted another woman who had her baby on the porch saying the baby was sick and cold because of a hole in the window. She called the inspectors and messed up a lot of things for Sherrena, therefor she evicted her. We learn a bit about Sherrena and Quentin s past as landlords and some things they ve had to go through.
Chapter 2 Lamar- Has 2 sons named Luke and Eddy. (20) 51 years old. (21) Is a Vietnam Veteran. (22) Is in a wheelchair and has prosthetic legs. (20) Joined the Navy in 1974 after seeing a commercial when he was 17. (22) SSI hasn't worked out for him. He applied twice after losing his legs. Got denied - he can still work in his condition. (23-24) Has his bed in the living room. (23) Has many kids over and gives advice about work, sex, drugs, cops, girls, and life.(24) Worked several jobs after leaving the Navy. (24) Got two checks by accident. Bought things he needed. The caseworker found out and caused him to be a month behind in rent. (26) The Navy: Blur of boring oceans, exotic locations, shore-leave parties, pills and blown checks (22). SSI: (Supplemental Security Income) A monthly stipend for low income people who are either elderly or have mental or physical disabilities (23). Lamar offered to paint Patrice s old unit after she got evicted. He, Buck, DeMarcus, Luke, Eddy and a half dozen other neighborhood boys helped fix up and paint the unit.(26) Lamar and the boys didn t finish painting, holes not filled, dripped paint on trim, ignored pantries. Lamar said Quintin didn t drop off the hole filler or brown paint. (30)
Chapter 2 Continued Oldest son 16 years. (20) Lives in one of the bedrooms. (23) Friends with DeMarcus (smokes weed and has been arrested)(21) and Buck (18 years, slept at his parents but lived w/ Lamar)(20-21) Their house had a moss green couch, team photos of past football seasons, white silk flowers, small fish tank w/ guppies. Spare and tidy w/ light. Food: spam, cereal, cans of soup and beans. (23) Luke- Eddy- Youngest son, 15 years. (23) Lives in the other bedroom. (23) Luke and Eddys mother s addiction consumed her and she gave up her boys How Lamar lost his legs: he was trapped inside an abandoned house in the snow. His feet swelled purple and black w/ frostbite. On the 8th day he was delirious and jumped from the highest level window. He then woke up in the hospital with no legs. This happened because he smoked crack but ever since then he stopped. (27)
