OCTOBER 2016 Trail s End Art Association NEWSLETTER Richard Newman s Photography on Metal Featured in TEAA Members October Show CALENDAR October 1 Saturday Reception/ArtWalk for Members Show 2-5pm Artists Reception in conjunction with Gearhart ArtWalk Saturday October 1 from 2-5 p.m. at the Trail s End Gallery. Oct. 3,10, 17, 24, 31 Mondays Drawing Group 10am-3pm Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25 Tuesdays Pastel Group 10am-3pm Dingle Harbor, Ireland..photo by Richard Newman.printed on aluminum Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26 Wednesdays Watercolor Group 11am-3pm This month s members show will feature the work of Richard Newman and will include his most recent photo prints on aluminum. Richard grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, impressed by the photographs printed in Life magazine and admiring the work of Ansel Adams. While still in high school he learned his way around the darkroom in his job as assistant photographer for the city of Cleveland. Photography has always been his avocation, even while earning his living in the business world. He focuses on landscape, nature, sports, and historical objects, printing on various surfaces, including aluminum, glass, and wood. Once photographed, all of his finishing work is done on his home computer. Richard received a First Place in the TEAA Annual Show for his photo of a Douglas DC3 fixed-wing, prop-driven airplane. Some of his photos have been used on the TV show Criminal Minds. continued on page 2. 1 Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 Thursdays Class with Shirley Dahlsten 10am-1pm Oct. 7 Friday Board Mtng. 10am Oct. 30 and 31 Sun./Mon. Intake: November Show

NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 Newman cont. Richard has traveled in 29 countries plus extensively in the US, photographing all the while. Photography is not a job for me; it is a passion for capturing memories., he says. What I try to do is capture the images in an artistic way by composition or by enhancing them on the computer to offer a new perspective. Photography has moved from just taking pictures to that of an art form using a camera and a lens like an artist uses a pallet and brush. We all know Richard for his contributions to TEAA serving as board president and as a champion of effective marketing of the gallery artwork. Check out his work at window-to-the-world-photography.com Welcome Back, Shirley! See you Thursday, October 6 at 10 a.m.! Special Invitation to non-members For $5 per session you can learn, share and enjoy the camaraderie of one of the art groups listed below. Of course we hope you ll become members, but this is a perfect opportunity for visitors and newcomers to the coast to see what s going on at Trail s End. Please give a heads up to the contact person for the group you are interested in. Area artists who have studied with Shirley Dahlsten know how exciting and inspiring she is. Shirley returns on October 6 to challenge artists of various painting media as she continues the series, Classical and Futuristic Art. Chosen media can include watercolors, oil, acrylics, pastels, and collage. Shirley will provide instruction in drawing and painting while the main focus will be to invite beginners and professionals to dive into new areas of creative adventure. The class will run for ten weeks, meeting at Trail s End Art Center, 656 A Street in Gearhart from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays. The fee for the class is $65, one-third of which is donated to the Trail s End Art Center building fund for maintenance and repair. The fee does not include materials. A limited number of scholarships is available based on need. No advance registration is required. For more information, contact Shirley at jandsdahlsten@gmail.com or call 503-325-1514. Old Door, Kinsale, Ireland Red-breasted Sapsucker photos by Richard Newman Drawing Group meets on Mondays from 10 am to 3 pm. Artists are welcome to join in whenever they like during that time frame. We are experimenting with various drawing materials such as graphite, colored pencils, pastel pencils, Neocolors, Conte crayons, ink pens and more. Many materials are available for you to try. Contact: Judi Marsh-Garrity 971-286-0529 Pastel Group for Intermediate and Advanced levels meets on Tuesdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Share ideas and learn from fellow pastelists, some of whom are nationally recognized for their work. Contact: Kathy Moberg 503-738-6653 Watercolor Group meets on Wednesdays from 11 am to 3 pm. All levels of independent workers are welcome. Many experienced, professional painters as well as emerging artists belong to this popular group. Contact: Suzanne King 503-298-1551 2

NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 Summer 2017 Workshops are HOT! We are delighted to announce that TEAA is bringing two very popular and well-respected artists to our studio next summer. Michael Schlicting (michaelschlicting.com) will present a three-day workshop for intermediate and advanced artists on painting with acrylics June 19, 20, and 21. Judy Morris (judymorris-art.com) will work with the same levels of watercolor artists July 24, 25, 26, and 27. She promises to share several enhancement strategies she has been using recently. Check each artist s website to get a general idea of the wonderful work each is doing. Here is the key point: Act now if you are interested. One reason that each artist is looking forward to coming to TEAA is that we have promised a maximum of 12 participants for each workshop. Because the number is small, we are opening pre-registration only to TEAA members, beginning NOW. The Acrylic Workshop will cost $300. for members and the Watercolor Workshop, $400. To reserve your spot, send a check for $100. payable to TEAA and clearly marked with which workshop you have selected. If you wish to attend both workshops, please send a clearly marked check for each one. In January, if there are remaining openings in either workshop, registration will be opened to non-member artists. Our planning ahead has brought us these fine artist/instructors. Let s fill up those spots! Some ways you can contribute to Trail s End Art Association and get a tax write-off: Do you have an ipad4 to donate? Or new and simpler use of the Square-Up to record credit card purchases will require a more up-to-date ipad than we are currently using. Other internet devices may work; call Richard at 503-758-7027 for more info. The studio is in dire need of a couple of electric pencil sharpeners in good working order. Maybe you ll see one at a garage sale..or maybe you are in a position to donate a brand new one; call Judi Marsh-Garrity at 971-286-0592 for info. Would you like to see a nice new bench in the TEAA yard? The old one is held together with bungee cords! There are many commercial styles available but a home-made wooden one would be just as nice. Take up this project and write off cost of supplies! Let Richard know. Kathy Karbo to offer free Open Studio to the Community.. A Lantern & Shadow Puppet class. Parents and Grandparents, bring your children! Kids, bring your significant adult (they can stay as long as you help them!) Sunday, October 16 from 12:00-2:00 PM Questions? Email: kathykarbo56@gmail.com 3

NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS OF SUPER FRIDAY AT TRAIL S END Friday, September 9 s potluck lunch was wellattended with many casting their ballots on the proposed changes to the Bylaws after enjoying the good company and delicious offerings set out on the big table in the gallery. Mike Bruhn, owner of Astoria s Best Frame Shop in the Dots n Doodles building, introduced himself and brought along three frame kits to raffle off. Be sure to see Mike for your next frame job as his goal is to give great matting and framing options to artists of modest means! The Nominating Committee is collecting names for the proposed slate of board members for 2017 to be mailed to members in November. All members were encouraged to have an artist s bio page with images of their work in the Artists Album that is kept in the Gallery for the information of visitors. In order to maintain a high quality presentation, members are urged to update their information. Judi Marsh Garrity has offered to design and print a new presentation page for anyone who needs help. Save the Dates! November 27 and 28 are the Intake days for art for the December Show with a holiday theme! Start your holiday paintings now! December 2 is the date of our next General Meeting at 12 noon with a Holiday Potluck Lunch. Also in November, you will receive by email the slate of proposed board members for 2017. If you would like to serve on the board or suggest someone s name contact Lynda Campbell at 503-738-6697. Jane McGeehan and MaryAnn Gantenbein are also on the Nominating Committee. Plein air days of Summer come to an end! The artists gather at Lynda Campbell s house for a final Show and Tell on September 29. This outdoor group meets again in May!
