INTRODUCTION The papers of James Strong Moffatt (1808-1890), businessman in Troy, Obion County, Tennessee, for fifty years, were given to the Manuscript Section of the Tennessee State Library and Archives by his descendants. The materials in this finding aid measure 26.62 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the collection. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the James Strong Moffatt Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT The papers of J.S. Moffatt, numbering 166 volumes (1848-1928), contain 1 checkbook, 65 daybooks, 18 journals, 67 ledgers, 7 letter books, and 8 voucher books relating to the business of J.S. Moffatt & Co. in Troy, Obion County, Tennessee. This business was a general merchandise store with dealings also in tobacco, wheat, and cotton. During a period of 6 years (1861-1867), there are no records due to the fact that Mr. Moffatt was aiding the Confederate cause by supplying troops from Troy with guns, clothes, and food. The town of Troy was founded about 1835, and the firm of James S. Moffatt was begun about 1840. It took over much of the business of the original large firm of Polk, Crockett, & Co.
