Preventative Medicine: Housing Strategies to Reduce Healthcare Costs Speakers: Hersh Fernandes Senior Technical Assistance Specialist Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Hersh previously worked at Amazon Web Services, responsible for using large-scale data analysis to inform sales strategies to the US Federal Government, Department of Defense, and National Security community. He also served in the Obama Administration on Vice President Biden's staff and on the White House Business Council. Hersh earned his bachelor's degree at Texas A&M University and was a member of the A&M Corps of Cadets. Jackie Mayo President and CEO HomeSource east tennessee Homesource east tennessee (HSET) provides affordable homeownership and rental housing opportunities, housing counseling, financial capability coaching and building performance guidance in Knox County and several surrounding East Tennessee counties. HSET and Jackie have been part of collaborative efforts in the Appalachian region and in the State of Tennessee to bridge the gap between housing providers, social service organizations, government agencies and the health field to broaden the housing options for very low-income seniors and those with special needs especially those coming out of institutional care. She believes that those who wish to live independently and have the ability to do so without risk to themselves, should have quality and affordable options.

LaDonna Merville Vice President Hospital Alliance of Tennessee Merville is responsible for coordinating membership communications, media relations and other public relations and communications functions for the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, the organization that represents not-for-profit hospitals on Tennessee s Capitol Hill. She is a public relations professional with extensive experience in strategic communications planning, writing, media relations, community relations, government relations economic development, health care communications and public relations counseling. Her successful 30-year career includes managing communications for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Middle Tennessee's largest business federation, and the American Heart Association. Michelle Mitchell Service Coordinator Emerald Housing Management Michelle Mitchell s life experiences have molded her into a person ready and able to offer care and support to others. Michelle is the Service Coordinator for the residents of Cleveland Summit, a property managed by Emerald Housing Management, LLC in Cleveland, TN. As a Service Coordinator her goal is to help the most vulnerable and underserved in our communities. She works with 78 individuals daily to help them to age in place with a strong focus on health maintenance, both physical and mental. One important factor in her career preparation was serving as a volunteer with a teacher mentoring boys who had been abused. She was inspired to make a difference in this world and advocate for others.

Ralph M. Perrey Executive Director Tennessee Housing Development Agency Perrey s tenure as THDA s Executive Director has seen the agency revamp its mortgage products and down payment assistance program; establish its own loan servicing division; and base staff regionally to better interact with partners across the state. Production in the Great Choice Mortgage Loan program has seen a 61% increase over the first quarter of 2017. Prior to being named Executive Director in November 2012, Perrey served nine years on THDA s Board of Directors. He serves on the Advisory Board of the National Housing Conference, the nation s oldest affordable housing organization. He is also a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati s Affordable Housing Advisory Council. Before joining THDA Perrey worked at Fannie Mae and on the senior staff of Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist. Judith M. Rose Assistant Vice President, Marketing Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati Judith Rose is responsible for promoting Membership, Advances, Secondary Market Loans. Letters of Credit and Housing programs to over 140 Member stockholders. Ms. Rose joined FHLB in 2001 and during her first nine years exclusively promoted the Affordable Housing and Economic Development Programs to over 500 member financial institutions and their housing partners. Prior to joining the FHLB, Ms. Rose served as Senior Local Government Advisor for the Department of Local Government in the Commonwealth of Kentucky specializing in Community Development Block Grants for Economic Development. She later spent a decade working as the Economic Development Director and chief grant writer for the City of Huntington, West Virginia where she and her team secured over $50 million in state and federal grants for community and economic development projects. Ms. Rose holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Eastern Kentucky University where she was a HUD Fellow and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Marshall University. She is a 2014 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking.

Rorie Scurlock Senior Director, Homelessness/Community Engagement United Way of Greater Atlanta In her current position, Rorie provides leadership and grants management to the Homelessness focus area, which ensures the coordination and implementation of key strategies to end homelessness. Rorie is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and received her master s degree from Georgia State University and bachelor s degree from Appalachian State University. Prior to her work at United Way, her experience includes case management with women experiencing homelessness and a severe mental illness, as well as behavioral health with youth. Lorrie Shearon Chief Strategy Officer Tennessee Housing Development Agency In her current position, Ms. Shearon is responsible for working with all program and support divisions in the agency to ensure strategic goals and objectives are successfully carried out. Lorrie oversees the research and planning division, the community programs division and the civil rights compliance function at THDA. She serves on the state s inter-agency council on homelessness, the regional elder task force for Central Appalachia, the state s Healthy Homes Advisory Board and recently served on a National Housing Conference-sponsored workgroup on health and housing. Ms. Shearon has been at THDA since 1995. She holds a bachelor s degree from the University of Virginia and a master s degree from George Washington University.

Jim Shulman Executive Director Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability As Executive Director of the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, Jim has focused on improving access for older Tennesseans who need help with services, meals and Medicare assistance. After graduating from Vanderbilt Law School, Shulman was lead legal counsel for the Department of Finance and Administration under Governor Ned McWherter. Later, he was responsible for the implementation of the state's Safety Net during TennCare Reform. He also assisted in efforts to implement the CoverTennessee Insurance program and was the instigator of the one-stop on-line program known as FindHelpTN. Laura Swanson Civil Rights Compliance and Strategy Officer THDA Laura Swanson is currently the Housing Strategy and Civil Rights Advisor for the Tennessee Housing Development Agency. Prior to assuming this role, she worked for THDA in the Research, Planning and Technical Services division, focusing on multifamily housing research and in the Rental Assistance Division, working with the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, Section 8 to Homeownership and the Family Self Sufficiency Programs on a statewide level. Laura has worked at THDA for 20 years, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Master of Arts in Sociology with an emphasis in Public Policy from Middle Tennessee State University.
