Your Guitar Goals: Creating Your Vision Of Success Now, you might be thinking this sounds like a bit of psychological rubbish. But, having used it myself, I ve completely changed my mind and it s now become one of the key tools I use with all my students. So, suspend your disbelief and cynicism for a few moments and really give this your full attention for the next 15 minutes. It s so simple, yet so powerful - you just have to give it a try. And remember, if you re getting stuck on learning a song, riff, technique, or solo, then don t let it kill your enthusiasm. Just take a break from it. Maybe leave it a few days or even a week or so. And in the interim do something, quick, easy and fun, like maybe learning new strumming pattern, or an easy song. Just do what you need to do, to keep your interest and motivation high....it s all part of the System! So in this training, I want to teach you a technique that I use extensively - for the simple reason, that it works!. In this training, you ll learn a simple technique that will drive you forwards on your Guitar Playing Journey. Dear fellow guitarist, welcome to this session. To help you with this technique, I ve created a simple template for you to complete. This template has been created to help you reach and exceed your guitar playing goals. It s a very simple tool, yet unbelievable powerful. But to get the most out of it, you ll need to set aside 15 minutes right now. I promise you it will be time well spent and will repay the investment in time thousands of times over! The strategy here is to take your guitar goals from being vague ideas or thoughts, which exist somewhere in the slightly foggy future and make them very real and specific targets that you ll be motivated to reach and exceed. They ll become larger than life and your desire to attain them will grow enormously as will your drive and motivation. A key part of this is to make your goal completely real. It s like you re looking back on your goal having already achieved it. You will remember reaching your goal and can recollect exactly what it was like as an experience. An experience that you can feel with all your senses. So your goal has a specific time and place, it is an event that you can create and build a living experience around. There are associated feelings and emotions, sights and sounds, even smells. With this template we re going to make your guitar goal (or goals) very, very real indeed. Once you ve completed this template, you print it out and keep it somewhere you can see it often. Even read it before each practice session. It ll get you motivated as you see your goal actually getting closer with every passing week. So, let s get started.
Part 1: Do you have a guitar playing goal? Simply and quickly complete this section. Don t agonise over it. The purpose of this is to get something written down out of your head and onto paper. You can then put it to one side and move onto the main section, or Part 2. Part 1 What is your current idea of your guitar playing goal? Ask yourself these three questions; 1. What is my current guitar playing goal? (use 1 or 2 sentences to outline your guitar goal. Examples; I want to be impressive in front of friends, I want to write my own song, It would be nice to play in a band one day, I have no idea). 2. Why is this my guitar goal? (just a few word here. Examples; I want to be good at something, it ll impress the girls, I just want to entertain myself and have a hobby, I m not really sure) 3. How far am I on my journey? (1 or 2 words should cover it. Example; nowhere, struggling, getting close I think, no idea). So maybe you re very clear about your goals, your reasons and your progress. But, I m guessing that it s all a bit vague and maybe you re feeling that you need more focus, direction and motivation? Well this is where we re going to start making your goal very real, very visible and very achievable. And we re going to get motivated about meeting and exceeding your goal.
Part 2: Part 2: How do I create a real guitar playing goal? Your Vision Of Success: Making it real. When our goals are vague and exist only at some point in the future, they tend to feel small and distant, fuzzy and perceptually never attainable. By making your goals real and defined you will tend to rein them in a little, maybe simplifying them and making them actually easier to achieve. They will become bigger in your mind and you get the buzz of realizing you can do it! So, we re now going to create your guitar playing goal. So, suspend your disbelief and cynicism for a few moments and really give this your full attention for the next 15 minutes. When you re ready and in a quiet relaxed space, take a moment and close your eyes. Now image your guitar goal is a specific event at a specific time and place. Now image the feeling that you have already reached your guitar goal. You re there in the moment and you can see it all clearly. You are aware of your feelings and emotions. Take a moment to absorb the atmosphere. Ask yourself the following questions on the next page and carefully write down the answers. It is important to include as much detail as you can in your answers. The detail is crucial in creating a powerful mental image for your goal.
Part 2: Part 2: Describing your goal... Remember this is like describing your goal as an event, that only happened yesterday or last night, so your memories and recollections are clear in your mind. 1. Where were you exactly (at home, work, studio, bar etc)? 2. What day of the week was it? 3. What time of day? 4. What was the lighting and atmosphere like? 5. What are you wearing? 6. What can you see around you? 7. What can you smell in the atmosphere? 8. What feeling or emotions can you recollect? 9. Who was there? 10. What were they doing? 11. What were they wearing? 12. What were you doing? 13. How did you feel at that time? 14. What did the people say afterwards? 15. What did you think you wanted to do next? Remember to add as much detail as possible and clearly describe your feelings and emotions as well as textures. colours, sights, sounds and smells. If you do this well, the image you create will be so clear and defined in your mind that you ll be able to recall it whenever you like, to help keep you motivated and to track your progress towards your goal.
Summary Keep It Fun! So that s it for this stage. I do hope you find the time to complete this template as I know it will help you reach and exceed your guitar goal. By going through this exercise you will become clear on actually what you re guitar playing goal is, rather than just having a vague idea of what if might be. This process will also help you bring everything into focus and provide a source of motivation for you when your confidence gets a bit low. But they key, is to make sure that your gutar playing journey towards your goal is fun. Catch up again soon. Andy.
