Microsoft Windows 95 2. Microsoft Windows 98 3. Microsoft Windows 98SE 4. Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 2.0 About software and firmware The Firmware Uploader Software for the E950 Ver.1.3 is a computer program that updates the firmware in your COOLPIX 950 (E-950). The firmware is a program, which runs inside the camera and controls its operation. By running the Uploader Software you will install the new firmware in the camera. The process of transferring the new firmware from the computer to the camera is sometimes called Uploading, Upgrading or Updating the firmware.

If your camera is version 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 it is recommended that you update the firmware in your camera to 1.3 in order to benefit from improved operating performance. The entire package (Uploader software and new firmware for the camera) is supplied in a single file, which is compressed for distribution over the Internet. Before performing a firmware update, you must de-compress the files back to their original format. 3.0 Improvements and bug fixes The principal changes to the camera firmware with the release of version 1.3 are in the form of the following improvements to product performance and minor bug fixes (not listed): 1. Version 1.2 improvements. a. Increased general brightness of LCD monitor b. Added function: Auto Sensitivity, increases sensitivity in low light. c. Matrix Auto White Balance d. Auto File Numbering setting in M-REC mode (was previously only available in M-REC) e. Improved brightness of LCD monitor in low-light shooting 2. Version 1.3 improvements (in addition to 1.2) a. Improvement in white balance control in fixed aperture mode b. If you select fixed aperture mode in manual white balance mode, the image sometimes becomes green. This problem has been solved. c. Improved manual focus accuracy d. With some cameras, when manual focus is set to infinity, the focus became inaccurate. This has also been overcome. e. Condition under which Preset white balance data is reset changed f. With version 1.2, the set value by preset white balance was reset when fixed aperture mode is set to off. With version 1.3, the value is not reset when this mode is turned off. 4.0 Restrictions on Usage This utility will update the firmware in your COOLPIX 950 to version 1.3. It can only be used if the version of the firmware in your COOLPIX 950 is version 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 and is not suitable for use with any other model of Coolpix camera. This version of the firmware can only update NTSC cameras. 5.0 Warnings

Your COOLPIX 950 could malfunction should any of the problems listed below occur while the firmware is being upgraded. Please exercise all necessary caution during the upgrade. The upgrade can be performed for you at a Nikon-authorized service center in the event that you do not have the equipment necessary to perform the upgrade, or are otherwise unsure that you would be able to perform the upgrade yourself. Your COOLPIX 950 could malfunction should any of the following occur during upgrade: 1. The camera turns off during the upgrade process 2. The data cable is disconnected 3. A problem occurs with the computer 4. The upgrade is performed in a place where there is excessive electrical noise. The camera could also malfunction if you make a forced exit from the uploader or another application interferes with the uploader during the upgrade. Be sure to exit any other applications before running the uploader software. 6.0 Confirming the current firmware version 1. Turn the camera off 2. Hold down the MENU button. 3. Turn the select dial to A-REC while continuing to hold down the MENU button until an image appears. The screen will display the current firmware version like: E950V1.0. If it reads other than 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 your firmware should not be updated. 4. Turn the select dial Off. This completes the version confirmation procedure. 7.0 Preparation Please make sure that you have the following items available 1. Power source - any one of the following: a. The Nikon EH-30 AC Adapter. b. Four new alkaline or other high capacity batteries, within three months of date of manufacture c. Four fully charged rechargeable batteries (size SUM-3 or AA) 2. Cable a. Nikon SC-EW2 serial cable (Windows) b. Nikon SC-EW2 serial cable and SC-EM2 conversion cable (Macintosh) 3. COOLPIX 950 User s Manuals NOTE: Please use only authentic Nikon AC adapters and serial cables; other products may damage the COOLPIX 950. 8. 0 Connection of Coolpix to your Computer 1.Connect the serial cable to the personal computer.

a. Windows users connect the Nikon SC-EW2 cable to the serial communication port. b. Macintosh users connect the Nikon SC-EM2 conversion cable to the serial communication port. Connect the Nikon SC-EW2 to the SC-EM2 conversion cable. For details, refer to the COOLPIX 950 user s manual. 2.Turn on the COOLPIX 950. If you have a Nikon EH-30 AC adapter, please connect it to the COOLPIX 950, and plug it into an AC outlet. If you do not have a Nikon EH-30 AC adapter, please install four new alkaline batteries or four fully charged rechargeable batteries. 3.If you are using batteries, be sure to set the auto power-off time (on the SETUP menu) to 30 minutes, to prevent the camera power from turning off automatically during the upgrade. For details, refer to the user s manual. This setting is not required if you are using the AC adapter. 4.Connect the serial cable from the personal computer to the serial port on the COOLPIX 950. For details on connection, refer to the COOLPIX 950 user s manual. 5.Set the COOLPIX 950 select dial to A-REC. 9.0 Upgrading the Firmware 1. Launch the Updater Software program. a. Windows users open Explorer, and double-click on the UPLOADER file. b. Macintosh users double-click on the UPLOADER icon. The file called Firmware is the actual firmware, which will be transferred to the camera. 3. When the text Click Upload button to start the update appears in the dialog box, click the Upload button. Once you have pressed this button, do not stop or interrupt the utility while it is in progress, or damage to the COOLPIX 950 may result. 4. The firmware upgrade process will begin. This should take between three and ten minutes depending on the speed and configuration of our computer. The following messages will be displayed during execution: Uploading: The firmware is being transferred to the COOLPIX 950. Writing Firmware: The firmware is being updated. Checking Firmware: The new firmware is being verified. 5. When the text Writing Firmware is complete appears in the dialog box, the process is complete. Click Close to close the utility. 6. Turn the COOLPIX 950 select dial to Off. 7. Disconnect the serial cable. 8. If you turned the sleep timer to 30 minutes reset it to your desired time. This completes the firmware update. 10.0 If things do not go as planned

The uploader software may not function as expected on some models of personal computer. 1. Error in writing Firmware message Should this occur, click "Close" to exit the uploader, disconnect the serial cable and follow the steps above to confirm the camera firmware version. If the firmware version displayed is "E950V1.3," the upgrade was successful. Any other display, "E950V1.0" for example, indicates that your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. In this case you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center to upgrade the firmware. 2. Compatibility problems may exist between the uploader and certain computers, making normal communication with the COOLPIX 950 impossible. When the computer is unable to communicate with the camera, the upgrade will stop and start repeatedly. In extreme cases, this process of interruption and resumption may repeat indefinitely. Should this occur, press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys on the computer simultaneously to force the program to quit. Restart your computer. If this problem occurs, your computer cannot be used to upgrade camera firmware. To upgrade the firmware, you will need to take your camera to the nearest Nikon-authorized service center.
