Moore s Law of Exponential Growth VMworld 2017 By Steve Jurvetson - https://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/31409423572/, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=55002144 Ray Kurzweil postulates a law of accelerating returns in which the speed of technological change (and more generally, all evolutionary processes [18] ) increases exponentially, generalizing Moore's Law in the same manner as Moravec's proposal, and also including material technology (especially as applied to nanotechnology), medical technology and others. [19] Between 1986 and 2007, machines' application-specific capacity to compute information per capita roughly doubled every 14 months; the per capita capacity of the world's general-purpose computers has doubled every 18 months; the global telecommunication capacity per capita doubled every 34 months; and the world's storage capacity per capita doubled every 40 months. Evolutions Next Steps? VMworld 2017 Content: Not for Vernor Vinge We will soon create intelligences greater than our own. When this happens, human history will have reached a kind of singularity, an intellectual transition as impenetrable as the knotted space-time at the center of a black hole, and the world will pass far beyond our understanding. This singularity, I believe, already haunts a number of science-fiction writers. It makes realistic extrapolation to an interstellar future impossible. To write a story set more than a century hence, one needs a nuclear war in between... so that the world remains intelligible. publication 2016 Lenovo Internal. All rights reserved. 5
Singularity Elon Musk Vernor Vinge We will soon create intelligences greater than our own "AI is a fundamental existential risk for human civilization, and I don't think people fully appreciate that. Ray Kurzweil we ll get to a point where technical progress will be so fast that un-enhanced human intelligence won't keep pace. VMworld 2017 Content: Not for publication 2016 Lenovo Internal. Elon Musk In the distant future, people may outlaw driving cars because it s too dangerous. You can t have a person driving a two-ton death machine. The problem is that at a lot of big companies, process becomes a substitute for thinking. You're encouraged to behave like a little gear in a complex machine. Frankly, it allows you to keep people who aren't that smart, who aren't that creative. The path to the CEO's office should not be through the CFO's office, and it should not be through the marketing department. It needs to be through engineering and design.
