Hidden Gems HIDDEN GEMS IN THE IGS LIBRARY These are items librarians Debi, Sue and Judy have identified that are under used library resources, these resources may have the potential to navigate problems, answer riddles and solve dilemmas. Located In the family history section the Iowa Journal of History and Politics is a scholarly journal published quarterly from 1903 to 1960 by the State Historical Society of Iowa. There are 59 volumes from years 1903 to 1961. An index is available for the first 40 volumes; the remaining volumes have an index at the back of each book. Examples of some of the articles you ll find: History of Liquor Legislation in Iowa The Quakers of Iowa in 1850 Pioneer Experiences in Keokuk County, 1858-1874 Located in the periodical section The American Occupation of Iowa 1833-1860; volume 17 pages 83-102 is a paper to summarize the settlement of Iowa between the years 1833 through 1860. You can look up names (Boyd, Harry, history by); places (Guthrie County. IA.); companies (Beat Em All Barb Wire Company, Vol. XXXVII page 361; Organizations (Soldier s Aid Society); and information on forts (Fort Armstrong, Illinois). Sometimes the article will be in the book, but often it will refer you to another book, newspaper or publication. It might take a little bit of effort to track the information down but is often well worth the effort. The Vertical Files are the vertical cabinets located in the family histories section, and the cabinet by the map case. Files found in the cabinets. Family Newsletters (a written report that tells about the recent activities of a family organization and that is sent to members of the family organization). Pioneer Certificates Will have an Iowa connection, and are filed by surname. Older files may be just a couple of pages; newer files may be half an inch. Items not usually found in a genealogical library but might be useful to patrons. Items not of sufficient size to be on the shelves. File cabinets located by the map case. Bible Records Information taken from family bibles, often there is birth and death information too. There is a bride and groom index on the top of the file cabinet. IOWA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY 50 th ANNIVERSARY 119

Geographical Files Some of the files contain information about geographical areas but other files are just things that don t seem to go anywhere else. Shirley Miller, Crockett and Englehorn Collections These are files from each individual s collection of research, or files created from research for someone else. Four Generation Pedigree Charts are located in the periodical section. In the past members were asked to submit 4-generation pedigree charts to IGS. Some are very complete and some are not but it never hurts to look. There are 31 volumes; and an index is in a purple binder. In addition there are 4 other volumes and each has an index. IGS Surname Index there is 5 volumes, volumes 1-4 are on 31 microfilm rolls. Volume 5 is in a set of 10 microfilm rolls. The rolls are microfilmed cards arranged in alphabetical order. The books will have some information but the cards will often have much more, including the source of the information. Biographical Record of Iowa located in the Iowa section 977.7 MEM 2 volumes. One volume index is just for the people listed in the main write ups. The other volume index is for everyone named in both volumes. Often indexes are not every name indexes. Don t miss your family because you didn t see their name in the indexes. Located on the shelves (the stacks) and filed under Dewey Decimal Numbers: 929 section is where the How To books i.e. How to date photos; Family Tree Maker manuals, and The New A to Zax (929.1) by Barbara Jean Evans. A to Zax is a comprehensive dictionary for genealogists and historians. A great guide for every term you are likely to run across while researching. One other book located in the 929.1 second is Black s Law Dictionary, whether it s a will, probate, deed, etc. this book will give a clear and precise legal definition of the terms used. 282 KEN section houses Parish Records Official Catholic Diocese 1977. Information includes archdioceses and dioceses of the US by state; Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, clergy, schools, etc. It also includes names and addresses. 977.7 MO is where Abandoned Towns, Villages and Post Offices of Iowa, by David C. Mott, can be found. It is a small blue book in the general Iowa section. 973.7 is where the Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska Civil War Veterans: Compilation of the Death Rolls of the Departments of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska, Grand Army of the Republic, 1833-1948 is located. Dennis Northcott is the author; the book contains information on post names, encampments and some biographical information. We also have a similar book for the state of Indiana. IOWA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY 50 th ANNIVERSARY 120

977.7 IOWA - From Ackley to Zwingle is a collection of the origins of Iowa place names i.e. Bondurant, Polk County, was named for Alexander Bondurant the founder of the town. We have miscellaneous newspapers on microfilm; they are housed in the cabinets by the census microfilm. Obituaries: We have thousands of obits that have been scanned and placed on our IGS server. The index to those scans is in a book placed on the microfilm cabinet. You ll have to ask the Librarian or Library Volunteer to access the file. Many of the Iowa genealogical societies have assembled obituary books. Look in the county s assigned section. (Ankeny and Warren counties have quite a few. The African American Interest group has also collected quite a few obits and funeral programs. They are located in the General Iowa section (977.7). We have a green filing cabinet full of obituaries that have been clipped from newspapers and pasted to cards. We have many miscellaneous microfilm rolls: Lutheran Church records, Iowa Mortality Schedules for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. We have microfilm of passenger lists and film from other states. There is microfilm for GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) post records; Iowa WWI Draft Cards and Roster and Records of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866.
