Printing Soft proof (viewing on screen) allows you to see what your colors will look like on screen for a particular printer. For printing use 300 DPI and set to inches. Images that you will be produce (output) from a printer. For on screen use 72 DPI and set to pixels. Images that will be viewed from a monitor screen (WebPages, etc). When making prints from a slide film. Images have to be converted from one format to another. In order to do that appropriate technology is an issue. The slide has to be digitally scanned and imported into the program. Images Notes The general rule regarding JPEG vs. GIF is this: Use JPEGs for photo-like images with lots of colors and subtle color shifts (like gradations). Use GIFs for flat color images and line art. In most cases this will result in better looking images with smaller file sizes (but for really small photo-like images, use GIF instead of JPEG). o GIF format is suitable for storing graphics with relatively few colors such as simple diagrams, shapes, logos and cartoon style images. o The GIF format supports animation and is still widely used to provide image animation effects. GIF and Indexed Images Pixels are small solid squares. The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel thus allowing a single image to reference a palette of up to 256 distinct colors. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. Indexed color saves a lot of memory/storage space and/or transmission time. Vector graphics files store the lines, shapes and colors that make up an image as mathematical formula and are resolution independent.
Flattening an Image When you flatten an image, Photoshop Elements merges all visible layers into the background, greatly reducing the file size. Flattening an image discards all hidden layers, and fills any transparent areas with white. Once an image is flattened, adjustment layers become part of the background. Text (Font) Font styles are important for the simple reason that they must be readable. There are three categories of fonts: 1. A serif font has a decorative flair on the ends of the letters. 2. Sans serif fonts do not have flair. Sans Serif are the best fonts for the web. 3. Script is Cursive and hard to read In order to change text (font) mode to vertical mode or mask mode, right click the text tool in the tool box and choose the appropriate tool. Rotation and Scale A destructive edit is when the geometrical shape of an object is altered. Skewing Project Scope and Due Dates are necessary planning details on a Photoshop project When using a layer mask.painting with black hides the image while painting with white reveals the image. Uncompressed and unprocessed digital files are called RAW files This grid design reflects the most commonly used principle for dividing image compositional sections and is called the Rule of Thirds Before you compose a layout design, imagine your picture area divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The intersections of these imaginary lines suggest four options for placing the center of interest for good composition. The option you select depends upon the subject and how you would like that subject to be presented. Preparing for your work (task) Always keep your audience in mind and design for them.
