Science FEST MONDAY 9TH NOVEMBER SCIENTIFIC SUE AND HER SCIENCE ROADSHOW Booking essential. Science Week 2.0: Design Your Future 2015 marks 20 years From the visable to the beyond, Scientific Sue of Science Week; a national, annual event that celebrates the brings her wacky combination of science and drama fascinating worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering and to this science show that is energetic, explosive and uses lots Mathematics (STEM). of volunteers! South Dublin Libraries is delighted to celebrate Science Week with Sue will focus on Light: how we see; optical illusions; solar events taking place across our library network from 4th - 20th energy; light sources; using lasers to transmit information. November, mainly for primary school groups. and lots more! Highlights of South Dublin s Science Festival across our library branches include hands-on science workshops with Junior Einsteins Science Club and Professor Messalot; Learnit Lego workshops; focus on kinetic energy with Elementary Engineerings; Scientific Sue and her amazing science show; the science of the very small with NanoWOW; and science experiments with the Rediscovery Centre. All events are for primary school groups and aim to make STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) interesting, accessible and most importantly fun! Tech FEST 16TH - 21ST NOVEMBER Tech FEST BRAND NEW TECH CLUB FOR KIDS + TEENS We are really excited to announce the County Library Tallaght has teamed up with techspace for a brand new programme of really exciting and fun maker activities for children and teens. techspace is a creative space where young people are inspired to create, produce and have fun with digital technology and maker activities. Young people work on exciting creative projects and get one-to-one assistance, guidance and support from techspace Educators and volunteer mentors. Our mission is to inspire and empower young people to use their native interest in technology to master 21st century learning skills and become digital creators. This November we are introducing a new programme encompassing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) activities for children and teens. For ages 8-12 years these activities include: Circuit Boards This includes experimenting with batteries, bulbs, switches and other electrical components and is a great introduction to start tinkering with circuits. Paper & sewn Circuits Making simple or complex electrical circuits on a piece of paper or create wearable technology. Makey Makey workshops The Makey Makey is a highly intuitive invention kit that encourages people to find creative ways to interact with their computers, buy using everyday objects such as a banana or Play-Doh as a replacement for keyboards and mice. Scribble Machines Scribbling machines are motorised contraptions that move in unusual ways and leave a mark to trace their paths. For the older age groups 14+ we will do soldering workshops to create your own mono amplifier kit and boom box. In 2016 we will further develop this programme by incorporating a new Creative Media Suite encompassing video and sound equipment for workshops with young adults and adults. The tech club will start on Monday nights and will eventually be rolled out to Saturdays. PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP WITH THE GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY Booking essential. No experience or equipment needed This workshop, tailored for adults is one of the most enjoyable & creative workshops run by the Gallery of Photography & it s coming to Tallaght Library for the Launch of Tech week. It s a practical hands-on course where participants learn how to build their own pinhole camera, calibrate their exposures & develop & print their own photographs in a pop-up darkroom. As well as the magic chemistry of the light room, participants are also introduced to digital processes including scanning, image manipulation with photoshop & inkjet print output. MONDAY 16 TH NOVEMBER TIME: 11.30AM - 2.30PM LAUNCH OF OUR NEW TECH SPACE WITH SACRED HEART SCHOOL KILLINARDEN All welcome. We will introduce you to paper circuits, sewn circuits, scribble robots, Makey Makey and sketch and play to name a few. For the older teens we will be soldering and making amplifiers and loads more. We will demonstrate how to search for a particular title or your favourite author, how to download it to your e-reading device, and then you can enjoy the thousands of e-book and e-audiobook titles in our digital collection. Participants must bring their own e-reader device. This is an exciting new project for us so we hope you will join us, you don t need experience just a little patience and loads of imagination... LEGO STORY STARTER WORKSHOP CLASS VISIT: FULLY BOOKED Pupils work together to create and build stories with LEGO bricks and figures, then use the unique StoryVisualizer Software to visualise, write and communicate their work. StoryStarter is a hands-on tool that also inspires students to collaborate while creating and communicating their stories. There will also be a troubleshooting and question and answer session. TTRS is especially designed for those with dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
