February 14, 2017 7:00 P.M. 325 North Third Street Fairborn, Ohio VISITORS WELCOME REMINDER: All meetings are now SCENT FREE, thank you. IT S BACK... February Features Round Robin Demonstrations Be sure to attend the February 14 meeting. We are having a round-robin. Five members of the MVQG will demonstrate five different quick and easy techniques for new and exciting items. Select the first demonstration you want to attend, and 10 minutes later we will all move to another demonstration. This meeting is sure to be not only lots of fun but also very informative. Our March speaker is Sharon Holland, a local fabric designer who will conduct a trunk show of quilts made from fabrics she has designed. Some of the quilts have been featured in magazines, some of the quilts were made from free patterns Sharon has on her website, and some of the quilts were made from patterns she sells. Sharon will also discuss the inspiration behind her quilt designs and some of her prints and collections. In addition, we will learn some tips explaining how to submit quilts and projects to magazines. And finally, Sharon will have time for Q & A. In April, we welcome Beth Sidley, a certified Studio 180 Design Instructor. If you are not familiar with Studio 180, you might want to take a look at Deb Tucker s website studio180design.net or look for Studio 180Design on pinterest.com. You are sure to find many patterns and tools you would love to have or at least like to learn how to use. Deb has designed numerous rulers and patterns to make quilting easier and more fun; her tools offer accuracy and precision for the best results. Perhaps you have heard of the Tucker Trimmer or Rapid Fire Hunter s Star or the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star. If not, take a look at Deb s website or Pinterest board because we have Beth all day the Wednesday following our April meeting. Beth will teach two classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Cost for each workshop is $20 for MVQG members and $25 for non-members. More information, pictures, and sign-up at the February meeting. Mary Lou McCormick, Vice President. cinemabuff@sbcglobal.net 293-0551 A Note from the President I am "sew" proud to be your new president of this guild. I will try to live up to the many great and talented past presidents that have led this guild. Our guild was founded in 1980 to not only further the art of quilting through education and communication but also to "join hands in friendship." As president, I want to make sure that we continue to create that sense of community that we build through our Monday sew-ins,

workshops, speakers, annual retreats, bi-annual quilt show, and bi-annual quilt related Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. And I am looking forward to having fun this year. We have a great year of programs ahead. One of my first tasks is to solicit volunteers for the following tasks: UFO Challenge Project, Secret Sister or something like it, a challenge quilt, or any other exciting quilt project or ideas. I will also be soliciting quilt jokes. Please email them to me at maryoo@ameritech.net. I am also trying to track down as to who has keys to our storage lockers. Most are accounted for but are there any out there that we may not be aware? Looking forward to having some good times together and seeing all those creative quilts for show and tell. Quilt away! Mary Bergseth, President maryoo@ameritech.net 427-3057 A Thank You Note As your outgoing president, I want to say it was a pleasure; I appreciated the opportunity and hope I served you well. If you were not at the January meeting, your new president was voted in and that is Mary Bergseth. Please congratulate her as I know she'll do a fine job. Thank you again! Sherry Gorby, Immediate Past President slgflwrpot73@aol.com 849-9261 The MVQG K.I.S.S. Is Nearing Dock The MVQG K.I.S.S. is nearing the dock. Get ready for boarding beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, February 18. The loading dock is at the Wingate, 3055 Presidential Dr., Fairborn. We set sail as soon as everyone is checked in. Your ship s crew has been busy planning to make your trip exciting, enjoyable, entertaining, and exquisite. Here are a few last minute suggestions to help you pack for your trip: Be sure to label your items. You might want to bring a surge protector.

If you want to play Left-Right-Center, bring 3 fat quarters for each game you want to play; we will play multiple games. Please do not arrive before 9 a.m. Deckhands will be available to help you get settled on the ship; please be generous with your tipping. Two licensed massage therapists will be waiting to help relieve those aches and pains that have been building up over the past few months. On Sunday, we will host a Progressive Quilters Market. Sales will take place in the seller s stateroom. Don t forget to bring some extra cash to purchase that one item you have been looking for or that yard of fabric you just can t live without or, perhaps, one of the latest quilting books. If you are a commuter, you can sell your treasures as well. Find a friend who has a room and work out a deal to use that stateroom for your sales. You will find detailed instructions and a sign-up sheet once you board and sign-in. Mary Lou McCormick Raffle Quilt Dresden Plates Due in February Thank you to all the ladies who took the kits at the January guild meeting to piece the Dresden Plates for the 2018 quilt show raffle quilt. Just a reminder that they are due back at the February meeting. If you are having trouble getting your plate to lie flat, please call me, Barb Carruth, at 254-8136. If you run out of time to finish it, please return the kit. Several people missed getting kits and would take over an unfinished project. Missing the January meeting set us back a little bit. I would like to have the plates with background ready to go out for appliqué at the March guild meeting. If you cannot attend the February meeting and have no one to bring in your pieced plate, or an unfinished kit, call me and I will come and pick it up. Barb Carruth, Raffle Quilt Coordinator jccbsc@gmail.com 254-8136 Third Monday Stitch-In The 3rd Monday Stitch-in will be on February 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Sue DeSantis, 102 Phillip Drive, West Milton. The February stitch-in has a tendency to get canceled because of the weather, so if it is iffy, be sure to call Sue first! Her number is 937-698-9182.

Updated Library Listing Available on Website Are you suffering from the winter doldrums? Do you need a little inspiration to kick start your creativity? Look no further than your Guild library! Take a stroll through the Guild's online library listing. We recently added some new books! (Box P). The Library listings are posted on the guild website, www.miamivalleyquiltersguild.org. The lists include Subject, Author and Title. If you see a book that you would like to check out of the Guild library, email me and I will bring the book to you at the next Guild meeting. Be sure to list the Box. Guild members are free to check out books and take them home to enjoy for a month and return at the next Guild meeting. If a book is late, the charge is just $1.00 per month. The library currently has over 500 books. There is bound to be some inspiration in there somewhere! Be sure to visit the library table in the back of the room at the next Guild meeting! We bring at least 40 books to every meeting! Tere Homer Librarian terequilts@yahoo.com Quilts of Valor Awards Four To Open New Year January was a busy month for our Quilts of Valor project! We awarded 4 QOVs, and received requests for several more. We talked to many people at our QOV booth at the Wright State quilt show and had over 40 people sign "Thank You" quilt squares to our veterans, which will be included in several of our QOVs. Thank you to Linda Morgan and her crew for all of their hard work in organizing this show! Also, thank you to our guild members who donated several hours of their time to work in our QOV booth! It is always rewarding to talk to others about how we can honor our active military and veterans. Our first QOV Sew-In of the year was at The Little Shop of Stitches in Miamisburg with 15 attending! We worked on making tops with the quilt blocks from our November block drive and also the signature blocks from the WSU quilt show. Our next Sew-In will be Monday, February 27 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (my apologies again for scheduling a Monday which conflicts with the guild sew-in at the senior center - there were very few days in February available!). Please sign up at the guild meeting if you plan to be there. Thank you to those who took a package of blocks at the January meeting to make into a QOV top. And as always, many thanks to all of you who quilt, bind, award, and spread the word! These quilts do make a difference! I try to post pictures on the guild's Facebook page of the recipient's and their quilts. "Like" us! Debbie Ginsburg, Quilts of Valor Coordinator debgins@aol.com 698-4711

Weekly Senior Center Sew-In Days Come join the MVQG Sew-In days at the Fairborn Senior Center for each Monday. We are able to sew from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every week. We have more room to sew and to layout quilts. The price is $2.00 to sew. If you are a member of the Fairborn Senior Center it is $1.00. For those who may be interested, the Fairborn Senior Center has lunch available on Mondays for $3.00. Call 878-4141 on Fridays to sign up for lunch on Monday. All are welcome to attend the weekly sew-ins. Come and get to know other members of the guild. You can come for a few hours or stay all day. Bring a project and sew, sew, sew. You can sew on something for yourself or work on projects for Community Quilts. Bring your sewing machine, tools and supplies, or do some hand work. Irons will be available. No home interruptions!!! Just as with guild meetings, the sew-in will be cancelled if the Senior Center is closed or dates may be changed during holiday periods. Come and have a fun time laugh and sew!!! Karen Engel jengel1047@aol.com 256-0450 Pillowcase Demonstration Instructions The following are instructions for making decorative pillow cases provided by Anna Fricker for the demonstration by Barb Carruth to be presented at the February guild meeting. You will need: 3/4 yard of your main fabric for the body of the pillow case 9.5" of fabric for your cuff 1.5" strip width of fabric for the ledge Instructions: 1. Fold and press the ledge strip in half to make a strip that is 3/4" wide 2. Press the long edge of the cuff (the 9.5" piece), up 1/2". I use a seam guide to help me get a consistent 1/2". 3. Lay the cuff right side up on table with the folded edge at the bottom 4. Lay the 27" body fabric right side up on top of the cuff, match the raw edges. (The wrong side of the body fabric will be touching the right side of the cuff) 5. Then lay the ledge piece (the 3/4" strip) on top of the body fabric, match raw edges. 6. Sew the pieces together using a 1/4" seam. 7. Press the cuff away from the seam. 8. Fold the cuff over and lay the folded edge 1/4" up from the bottom of the ledge. I use a seam guide to help get this straight. Pin as you go. 9. Press flat

10. Using a matching thread, sew the cuff close to the folded edge, this should look like top stitching. 11. Trim the sides so they are even. This will remove any selvage edges. 12. Fold the piece wrong sides together matching raw edges. 13. Using 1/4" seam allowance, sew down the side and across the bottom. When you get to the corner, just pivot and continue sewing, don't break your thread. 14. Trim the bottom corners close to the stitching. This will help give you nice sharp corners. 15. Turn the pillow case inside out being careful to get the bottom corners turned to a nice point. Make sure that the side and bottom seams are also folded nicely. 16. Using a 1/2" seam allowance, sew the sides and bottom seams making sure that the original 1/4" seam is inside of the 1/2" seam that you are sewing. This seam encloses the raw edges and makes a very nice finished seam! 17. Turn pillow case right side out and press. Congratulations, your pillowcase is complete!! Are you on Facebook? If you are, be sure to like the Guild page on Facebook: Miami Valley Quilters Guild. This can be an important tool for communication among Guild members and with quilters around the world.
