See Table 1 for product names, overall dimensions, maximum exposure to the weather, location of nail line and classification per or ASTM D3161, as applicable. See Table 2 for accessory products. See Figures 1 and 2 for typical installation details. 3.2 Three-tab Shingles Marathon 20, Marathon 25, Marathon 25 AR and Marathon Ultra AR are three-tab shingles manufactured with a single fiberglass mat, coated on both sides with asphalt and surfaced with ceramic mineral granules. The shingles are self-sealing and have 0.24-inch-by-2.24-inch (6.1 mm by 56.9 mm) thermal sealing adhesive buttons spaced 1 inch (25 mm) apart and located at the centerline of the shingle, 6 5 / 8 inches (168 mm) up from the butt edge of the shingle. 3.3 Laminated Shingles: Cambridge, Cambridge HD, Biltmore AR, Cambridge AR, and Armourshake are laminated shingles manufactured with a double layer of fiberglass mat coated with asphalt on all sides and surfaced with mineral granules. The shingles are self-sealing with thermal sealing adhesive buttons located 1 inch (25.4 mm) above the shingle butt on the unexposed side of the shingle. (Exception: The self-sealing thermal adhesive for the Armourshake shingle is located on the back of the shingle.) 3.4 Accessory Shingles: 3.4.1 Leading Edge Plus Starter Strips: These are factory-made shingles used under the first course of shingles being installed or applied on the roof. The shingles are perforated in the middle for separation into two starter pieces. 3.4.2 Hip and Ridge Shingles: Hip and Ridge is a single-layer fiberglass shingle impregnated with asphalt and having a mineral algae-resistant granular exposed surface. The shingles are scored for separation into four pieces. 3.5 Fasteners: Fasteners must comply with ASTM F1667 and must be minimum No. 12 gage [0.105-inch-diameter (2.67 mm) shank], 3 / 8-inch-diameter-head (9.5 mm), galvanized, stainless steel, aluminum or copper, barbed-, deformed-, or smooth-shank roofing nails. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate 3 / 4 inch (19.1 mm) into the sheathing, or through the sheathing, whichever is less. 3.6 Underlayment: Underlayment must comply with ASTM D226 Type I or Type II, ASTM D4869 Type I or Type II, or ASTM D6757. In areas where there has been a history of ice forming along the eaves causing a backup of water, an ice dam barrier in accordance with IBC Section 1507.2.8.2 or IRC Section R905.2.7.1 must be provided. 3.7 Asphalt Cement: Asphalt roofing cement used for hand-sealing the shingles must comply with ASTM D4586, Type I, Class I, or Type II, Class I. ESR-3532 Most Widely Accepted and Trusted Page 2 of 5 4.0 Installation: 4.1 New Construction: 4.1.1 General: When installed on new construction in accordance with this section and the IKO Industries Limited installation instructions, the shingles are a Class A roof covering. The shingles, underlayment and flashings must be installed in accordance with IBC Section 1507.2 or IRC Section R905.2 except as noted in this report. The shingles must be installed over roof decks of codecomplying, minimum 3 / 8-inch-thick (9.5 mm) exterior-grade plywood; 7 / 16-inch-thick (11.1 mm) oriented strand board (OSB); or nominally 1-inch-by-6-inch lumber installed as solid sheathing conforming to IBC Sections 2304.7.2 and 2308.10.8 and underlayment specified in Section 3.6. Minimum roof slope must be 2:12 (16.7 percent). See Figures 1 and 2 for typical installation details. A starter course of Leading Edge Plus or shingles consisting of three-tab shingles, cut off at the top of the cut-out, is attached to the eave and rake edges using fasteners located 3 to 4 inches (76 to 102 mm) from the eave edge and spaced 1 inch (25.4 mm) and 12 inches (305 mm) from each end, for a total of four fasteners per shingle. The starter strip must overhang the eave and rake edges by a at least a nominal 1 / 4 inch. The first course of field shingles is then installed over the starter course. The shingles are located with vertical joints in three-tab shingles offset a minimum of one quarter of the tab width from adjacent courses; in laminated shingles the vertical joints must be offset a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm). 4.1.2 Application: 4.1.2.1 Fastening: Fasteners are as described in Section 3.5. For roof slopes of 2:12 to 21:12, each shingle is fastened to the roof deck using a minimum of four fasteners, spaced as shown in Figures 1 and 2. For roof slopes over 21:12, six fasteners are used, spaced as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Fasteners must be placed on the fastener line. Maximum exposure to the weather is 5 5 / 8 inches (143 mm) for three-tab shingles, and 5 3 / 4 inches (146 mm) for laminated shingles. 4.1.2.2 Shingle Sealing: In colder climates or wind regions where it is questionable whether the thermalsealing adhesive will activate and seal the shingles, the shingles must be hand-sealed. For three-tab shingles, each tab is sealed to the roof deck with a 1-inch-diameter (25.4 mm) spot of asphalt cement, placed at the center of the tab, 1 1 / 2 inches (38 mm) up from the bottom edge. For laminated shingles, three 1-inch-diameter (25.4 mm) spots are applied per shingle, spaced equally along a line 6 1 / 4 inches (159 mm) below the top edge of the previous course of shingles. Overlying shingles are sealed by having them embedded in the cement spots. For applications on slopes greater than 21:12, hand-sealing is required. Refer to the hand-sealing guidelines in the report holder s published installation instructions. The shingles must be hand-sealed to the satisfaction of the code official. 4.1.3 Hip and Ridge Shingles: Hip and ridge shingles are placed evenly over hips and ridges, and are fastened to the roof deck using two fasteners, one located on either side of the shingle, 6 1 / 8 inches (mm) from the exposed end and 1 inch (25.4 mm) up from the edge. Hip and ridge shingles are installed with a maximum 5 5 / 8-inch (143 mm) exposure to the weather. Hips and ridges for laminated shingle roofs may be double thickness. 4.1.4 Valleys: Valleys must be constructed as required by IBC Section 1507.2.9.2 or IRC Section R905.2.8.2 except as follows: Metal valley flashing used in open valleys must extend 12 inches (305 mm) from the centerline, each way. Underlayment placed directly under the valley flashing or beneath closed-cut valleys must be 36 inches wide (914 mm), and either minimum 50-pound-per-100-squarefoot (2.4 kg/m 2 ) felt underlayment or a membrane complying with ASTM D1970. 4.2 Reroofing: When installed over existing Class A or Class C asphalt shingle roofs in accordance with this section, the shingles described in this report are recognized as a Class A roof covering. The existing asphalt shingle roof covering must be inspected in accordance with the provisions and limitations of Section 1510 of the IBC or Section R907 of the IRC. Prior to the reroofing, hip and ridge covering must be removed. Except as noted in this section, the shingles must be installed in accordance with Section 4.1 of this report. Fasteners must be of sufficient length to penetrate 3 / 4 inch (19.1 mm) into the sheathing, or through the sheathing, whichever is less. Flashing and edging must comply, as applicable, with IBC Sections 1510.5 and 1510.6 and/or IRC Sections R907.5 and R907.6. 5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE The IKO Industries Limited asphalt shingles described in this report comply with, or are suitable alternatives to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions: 5.1 The products must be manufactured, identified, and installed in accordance with the applicable codes, this report, and the manufacturer s published installation instructions.
