Cascading Skirt Pattern Fr this pattern yu will need: 1/3 yard f well draping fabric. Swimwear, dance fabrics, and very stretch knits are the perfect fabrics fr this pattern s style. (Yu can use ld T-shirts t practice this skirt with knits. They are perfect fr that.) Wven fabrics may als be used. They wn t hang quite the same way but are still cute. ¼ yd. f crdinating fabric fr ptinal trim and ruffle. 12 inches f ¾ inch black r white braided elastic. (If yu use fld-ver elastic use 11 inches instead f 12. It has mre stretch than braided elastic.) Thread t match yur fabric/elastic. Sewing Equipment/Tls yu will need: Scissrs, Pins, Chalk, Pattern Tracing Paper r Light clred Tissue Paper Cut 1 Skirt frnt piece n the fld. Cut 1 Skirt back piece n the fld. Cut 1 piece f ¾ inch black r white elastic 12 inches lng. Cutting Instructins Cut 2 ruffle pieces 2 X 20 fr the hem frm the same r crdinating fabric. Skirt Sewing Instructins Imprtant: Use a 3-3.5mm stitch length r the stretch/knit stitch if yur machine has ne fr the seams when making the skirt. These stitches help t keep the thread frm breaking when the elastic stretches. *Unless therwise nted, yu will use ¼ inch seam allwances fr all seams.* 1. Finish the very tp edge f bth skirt pieces t prevent fraying and give a prfessinal lk. Yu can use a serger r a zigzag stitch. (If yu are using a knit swimwear r dancewear fabric, this isn t necessary as it wn t fray. It s up t yu. The fllwing examples d nt shw finished edges.) 2. With right sides tgether, sew the skirt frnt t the skirt back at the side seams. Finish the seams as desired. (The crners f the side seams will just tuch at the bttm. Then, the back f the skirt will be lnger as shwn.) 3. Place a pin at the center frnt and center back f the skirt as shwn and set aside. 4. Sew the shrt ends f the 12 inch piece f elastic tgether with a ¼ inch seam. Then, press the seam pen and sew each side f the seam allwance t lie flat against the elastic. 5. Mark the elastic with chalk int quarters n the right side f the elastic. The picture belw shws tw f the marks. The seam is the first chalk mark, then acrss frm that when lying flat. Next, bring yur first 2 marks tgether and mark n the ther 2 ends. (Yu will have a seam and 3 chalk marks an even distance frm each ther.) 6. Match thse fur marks n the elastic with the side seams and center frnt/back f the skirt. The skirt tp edge shuld verlap the elastic by ½ inch. Can yu see the 4 pin heads in this picture? 7. The skirt fabric will be wider than the elastic. Stretch the elastic t meet the width f the skirt between the pins and keep pinning until all the fabric is wrked int the elastic. 8. Tpstitch the elastic nt the skirt fabric, stretching the elastic a bit, but letting the machine feed the fabric slwly. 9. The fllwing picture shws hw the finished stitching will lk n the inside. (This fabric isn t finished at the tp edge because it is swimwear fabric. If yu want it t lk mre finished yu culd add a rw f stitching clser t the tp f the skirt fabric.) 10. 11. Then, press again anther ¼ inch and pin. 12. Sew the hem as clse t the fld as pssible. With stretchy knit and swimwear/dance fabrics, yu dn t even have t hem the skirt at all since it wn t fray. That s yur chice as the skirt maker Alternate Hem Style Add a ruffle fr a mre frmal and dramatic lk! Cut 2 pieces f fabric 2 inches by 20 inches. Sew the shrt ends f the ruffle tgether. Finish the seams f the ruffle as desired. Finish ne lng side f the ruffle as desired. Press this t the wrng side f the fabric and stitch int place. Starting at the side seams, sew 2 rws f basting stitches alng the tp edge f the ruffle. Leave lng threads at the ends. Yu have 2 separate sides t ruffle. The seam starts at ne side seam and stps at the next side seam t create 2 separate basting areas. The first picture shws the first set f basting stitches. The secnd picture shws the duble rw. Match and pin the side seams f the ruffle t the side seams f the skirt with right sides tgether. Match the center f the skirt pieces with the centers f the ruffle pieces n each side. Gather the ruffle t the same width f the skirt and pin in place. Stitch the ruffle int place and finish the seam as desired. The skirt pieces shuld be flat and the ruffle will have tucks as evenly placed as pssible. Press the seam up tward the skirt waist. If desired, stitch just abve the ruffle seam t keep the ruffle frm flipping up. The first picture shws the ruffle sewn n and flipped ut. Yay! Yu re dne! Try it n yur dll and ENJOY! Anther Alternate Hem Style A different kind f ruffle t add interest! Cut 2 ruffle f knit fabric 1 inch by the entire width f the fabric. They shuld be abut 42-54 inch wide depending n the manufacturer. Sew a basting stitch (4-5mm) thrugh the center f the entire ruffle. Yu can draw a line dwn the center with a disappearing marker t insure yu sew a straight line. Hld the threads with ne hand and cinch the fabric tgether t gather the ruffle alng the center basting stitch until yu have the ruffle the length yu desire. (It might twist n yu. But, yu can flatten it ut while yu pin it t the edge f the skirt.) Fld the ends f the ruffle t a pint. Then tuck the pint under flat and pin t the edge f the right (as yu are facing the skirt) skirt seam. The skirt in this pht was created using a yellw knit lining was used t make 2 frnt skirt pieces, hemmed ½ inch, and then layered under the see-thrugh black knit fabric made with the regular frnt piece and the lnger back piece. The tp was made using the LJC Trendy t-shirt mdificatins pattern. BONUS: T make the ruffled headband: Cut a piece f fldver elastic the circumference f yur dll s head. Overlap the ends and stitch tgether. Then, take a piece f 1 inch wide knit fabric and baste a stitch dwn the center. Ruffle up yur fabric t the length yu want. Then, sew the fabric nt the headband elastic with the same methd as described in the ruffled hem style skirt. Dn t frget t backstitch at the beginning and the end f the ruffle when sewing it nt the headband.
