Assassination Nation

Welcome A quartet of wildly different titles front a month of celebration (more on that later) at the Electrics this month. Steve McQueen saw his last film, 12 Years a Slave, scoop a handful of Oscars in 2014 and now returns with the pulsating crime thriller, WIDOWS. Fresh from bringing Gellart Grindelwald to justice, Newt Scamander faces a renewed showdown with his newly escaped nemesis in FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD, showing at both sites from Friday 16. The genre-defying, zeitgeist-capturing ASSASSINATION NATION delivers a raucous look at a town uprooted by personal data leaks with brutal consequences. Catch it at Shoreditch from Friday 30. On the same day, Portobello welcomes a new take on a familiar character as Claire Foy steps into the tattooed role of Lisbeth Salander in THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER S WEB. Fifty years ago the Electric Cinema Club was founded, establishing the Electric Portobello as a destination for cinephiles across London. To celebrate this chapter in the history of the Electric, we ll be getting the band back together for a special anniversary event featuring the Cinema Club s founding members on Saturday 3 November. Find more details inside. We re also running guest curated screenings courtesy of the Cinema Club s original programmer, Peter Howden, throughout the month, offering a chance to catch certified classics back on the big screen. Continuing until Thursday 8 November Bohemian Rhapsody UK/USA 2018 134m Dir. Bryan Singer With Rami Malek, Joseph Mazzello, Mike Myers, Ben Hardy, Gwilym Lee, Tom Hollander, Aidan Gillen Telling the story of the ultimate showman, the band he would take to dizzying heights and the tragedy that shaped his later years, this look at the life of Freddie Mercury offers a glimpse into the world of one of music s most iconic performers. Chronicling Queen s path to their defining Live Aid concert, this is a foot-stomping, hand-clapping celebration of defying stereotypes and walking your own path. 12A contains moderate sex references, drug references, infrequent strong language

From Friday 9 November UK/USA 2018 130m Dir. Steve McQueen With Viola Davis, Liam Neeson, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Carrie Coon, Jon Bernthal, Elizabeth Debicki, Robert Duvall When a group of career criminals are killed on their latest job, the wives they leave behind take matters into their own hands in thrilling style. Steve McQueen teams up with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn for a subversive heist thriller that sees the quartet of widows, left saddled with debt and backed into a corner, resort to desperate measures to find a way out.

From Friday 16 November UK/USA 2018 134m Dir. David Yates With Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Zoë Kravitz, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterston, Carmen Ejogo Picking up where the last film dropped us off, this fantastical follow-up finds the wizarding world in a time of great peril. With Gellart Grindelwald now free and quickly recruiting others, he is close to enacting a plan that would see the end of all non-wizards. Standing between him and certain doom, Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander are forced into dark new places in order to prevail. Screening in 2D and 3D.

From Friday 30 November UK/Germany/Sweden/Canada/USA 2018 Running time tbc Dir. Fede Alvarez With Claire Foy, Vicky Krieps, Sverrir Gudnason, Lakeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Volker Bruch Lisbeth Salander has spent the last ten years fighting on behalf of those who cannot. Righting wrongs and battling miscarriages of justice, the computer hacker has dedicated her life to protecting women from the men who harm them. Now, in the new instalment of the bestselling series, she is forced to face her past and finds herself tangled among spies, criminals, and corrupt officials.

From Friday 30 November USA 2018 108m Dir. Sam Levinson With Odessa Young, Hari Nef, Suki Waterhouse, Abra, Colman Domingo, Bill Skarsgård, Joel McHale Salem is a typical small American town, but in amongst the white fences and manicured yards, its locals have become vengeful sociopaths. It started with a hack, exposing a staunchly homophobic Mayor as a hypocrite, and before long half the town s deepest secrets became public, sending the previously sedate neighbourhood into bloody meltdown. This is a story of how four girls fought back. 18 contains strong bloody violence, sexual threat

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Electric Cinema Club: the guise in which the Electric Portobello operated in the late 1960s and 1970s, when London s cineastes flocked to the cinema, and the likes of Stephen Frears and Nic Roeg sought inspiration from its ground-breaking programme. To celebrate this landmark episode, we will be welcoming the Club s original members for a screening of a speciallymade documentary, followed by a Q&A chaired by BFI programmer and former Club staffer Geoff Andrew. We round off with a screening of Black Narcissus: a film close to the Electric Cinema Club s heart, and the first in a special series curated by the Club s programmer, Peter Howden read on for more information. Tickets for this event, including the Q&A and both films, are 30, with all proceeds going to the Electric Cinema Club s online archive project.

The Electric Cinema Club selects: Sunday 11 November 2pm Sunday 18 November 2pm Sunday 25 November 2pm Performance The Red Shoes The General UK 1970 105m Dir. Nicolas Roeg, Donald Cammell With Mick Jagger, James Fox, Anita Pallenberg, Michele Breton UK 1948 131m Dir. Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger With Marius Goring, Jean Short, Gordon Littmann, Julia Lang, Bill Shine, Anton Walbrook, Austin Trevor Chas is a gangster seeking shelter in which to lie low. Tucker is a reclusive rock star struggling for inspiration. As their paths cross in a Notting Hill flat, Chas has his eyes opened to a new and bohemian lifestyle as Mick Jagger s Tucker aided by hallucinogenic hedonism begins to blur the lines of reality and fantasy. ECC programmer Peter Howden: The quintessential 1960s/70s Notting Hill movie - sex, drugs, rock n roll included - and unsurprisingly a perennial Electric audience favourite. The real Powis Square is a few minutes walk away from the cinema. Torn between the love of a man and her love of dancing, ballerina Victoria Page faces an impossible decision. Under the strict guidance of the renowned Boris Lermontov, Victoria s talents flourish but her romantic distractions are swiftly rebuked, in this stately golden age classic. The Electric regularly presented the then underappreciated brilliance of the writing/producing & directing team of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger to a new generation of cineastes. The first book to be published in the UK on their work was dedicated to the Electric. PH USA 1926 92m Dir. Clyde Bruckman, Buster Keaton With Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Glen Cavender, Jim Farley In arguably Buster Keaton s most recognised film, the silent star goes behind enemy lines in order to rescue his twin loves; his sweetheart Annabelle and his beloved train, The General. As the Civil War breaks out and Union spies hatch a plan to steal engineer Johnnie Gray s train unaware Annabelle s on board Keaton jumps into action in exuberant slapstick fashion. The brilliance of comedy genius Buster Keaton was celebrated many times at the Electric, not least in a summer retrospective of all his silent feature films. The General was also the very last film to be shown at the Electric on its closing night. PH

Discovering that partner Nick is famous across Asia and, in fact, the continent s most eligible bachelor, Rachel faces a battle against family, tradition, and jealous onlookers to prove to everyone that she belongs. 12A contains infrequent strong language, moderate sex references On the surface THE RIDER is a modern cowboy yarn, but underneath simmers a bold exploration of youth and young manhood in America s rural heartland. After Brody Blackburn suffers a head injury that leaves him unable to ride broncos a pastime he s dedicated his life to he goes in search of answers, in the hope of finding a new direction to attach himself to. Entering a fashion world ruled by slightly built white men and women, André Leon Talley certainly stood out from the crowd. But then standing out from the crowd is something he s been doing all his life. This documentary traces how Talley defiantly established himself as a noteworthy presence in the industry, and an inspiration to countless others. 12A contains moderate sex references, language, references to discrimination
