Supplies: Americana Drying Time Extender - # 83131 Americana Acrylic Matte Spray Finisher - # 70836 Quilt Block Stars & Hearts Stencil - # 70851 Fine Sanding Paper or Large Sanding Pad (Fine/Medium) # 70796 Wax from a candle, an ordinary household votive or tea-light candle can be used for this step. Brushes: Papillon by the Artist s Club: Glaze Wash, size 3/4 #20102 Round, size 2 #20158 Script Liner, size 10/0 #20137 Angular Shader, size 3/8 #20110 Shader, size 6 #20127 Stencil Brush Set #20189 (3/8 was used) Preparation: Basecoat all pieces solidly in Black and let dry completely. Painting Instructions: We will work on each piece one at a time. Once your wax has been applied and your top coat painted over, you will want to sand as soon as the top coat dries. Not only is this easier, but the effects will look great as well! BASE Simply take your candle and rub over the base. Keep in mind, where the wax is applied, is where your top coat color will sand off, leaving the Black undercoat show through. You can apply as little or as much as you d like for that chipped paint effect that you prefer. Now that you have applied your wax, rebase the base in Uniform Blue and let dry. It s easier to sand right after the top coat has dried. If the dried paint sits too long, it becomes a bit harder to sand. Take your sandpaper or sanding disc and lightly sand over the entire base. You will see where the paint will come off over the waxed areas and leave a great primitive looking effect. Once you have completed this step. Use the Quilt Block Stars & Hearts stencil and choose a 1

few star and heart designs that will fit around the top edges of the base. I stenciled the Stars in Bleached Sand and the Hearts in Rookwood Red. I just placed these randomly. I did pounce with a drier brush so the stenciled parts weren t completely solid. HANDLES Rub wax onto the handles in the same manner that you did the base. Then rebase your handles with Bleached Sand and let dry. Once dry, sand the handles to reveal the Black paint underneath and give your handles that chipped paint look. INSERT Rub wax randomly on the insert, be sure to go around the edges of the insert as well. Then rebase the entire insert with Bleached Sand and let dry. Once dry, sand over the insert and around the edges to reveal the Black undercoat for that primitive or worn look. Once you have finished sanding, trace on the lines for your striped background. I picked two middle lines (will be the red ones) and rebased those in Black. Once dry, rub your wax back over the Black lines and then apply Rookwood Red to those lines and let dry. Once dry, sand those red lines to reveal the Black underneath, consistent with your Bleached Sand lines. 2

Shade along the top and bottom of each red line with Uniform Blue. Now you can trace the crow silhouette and the branches onto your insert. Once you can see where the leaves and the crow will be placed, take your candle again and randomly rub on some wax where the crow will be and a bit on each leaf as well. Once you ve completely that, basecoat your stems, leaves, and crow solidly in Black. Once dry, take your sandpaper and lightly rub across the crow and each leaf to reveal the red/white background underneath. Finishing: Once you are finished with your painting we will need to seal our project! I used Americana s Matte Spray Sealer and applied a couple of coats (letting it dry between coats) for the best protection. The hardware is included for the handles and you can apply the handles before or after sealing. This is a fun, quick project that I hope you will enjoy!! Perfect for those backyard BBQ s and picnics all year round! Sharon Bond 3
