1. Introduction For the assembling an even underground is necessary. To avoid significant influence on the weight measurement a maximum inclination of 5 should not be exceeded. The snow scale can be sunk in the ground or mounted lying on the surface. The frame is not cantilever! It has to rest on the red marked flat profile beams on the underground. The total load applied to the system is passed over these surfaces to the ground. 5

Big Parts: 7x From left to right: 6 x U-Profile beam, 2 x L-Profile beam, 4 x marking rods, 7 x plates, 1 x assembly group measure cell with connected lightning protection box Additional necessary material: A 10 m long 4-pole cable (e.g.: LiYCY 4x0.5) for the signal output is included in the delivery. 7
3. Technical Specifications Measurement Output: The snow scale measures the snow-water equivalent. (SWE) in mm. This value is identical to the snow weight per area in kg/m². Plates: The system s surface consists of 7 plates. The weight is measured over the middle plate only. The surrounding plates provide a uniform weight distribution across the middle plate. 9
4. Assembly of the Snow scale 4.1. Assembly of the profile carriers Tighten the distance bolts only by hand! All included profile carriers (6 pieces) are prepared with 12 drill holes each for mounting distance bolts: Screw the distance bolts into the U-Profile carriers: 4 pieces: (1) Screw the distance bolts into the U-Profile carriers: 2 pieces: (2) 10
Connect the 4 pieces (1) and the 2 pieces (2) of the U-Profile with the L-Profile carriers (3): (3) Distance bolts are marked with a red circles. (3) (1) (1) (2) (2) (1) (1) Important: The L-Profile carriers are placed on top of the U-Profile carriers! 11
12x: Each L-Profile carrier is screwed with the most outside holes of the U-Profile carriers with detent edge disc M6 and M6x12 screw. Do not tighten the screws yet. Important: The earth conductor is fixed in one of the four corners. An M6x16 screw is used. The earth conductor is fixed with 2 detent edge discs M6 and an M6x16 screw. The recommended cross section area is 16 mm². The earth conductor is screwed at one of the corners of the snow scale into one of the L- Profile carriers. Specific rules and laws in your country are to be complied with! After checking if both diagonals (X) have the same length (372 cm), the screws should be tightened. 12
4.2. Assembly of the first plates Which place is left free, depends on where you wish to place the signal output from the lightning protection box: The distance bolts should go through the holes of the enforcement sheets. This works only if the distance bolts are screwed into the correct holes. 13
4.3. Assembly and connection of the measure cell 4.3.1. Install the Snow Scale Screw measure cell from above to the snow scale: 4x: Screw the assembly group measure cell in the middle with M8x25 screws 4x: Remove hexagon cap nut and one of the two plastic washers; leave one of the two plastic washers. 14
4.3.2. Connect the Snow Scale Connect the signal cable with the circuit board of the lightning protection box: Connect the wires with the 4-pin connector only when it is not plugged in. Otherwise the electrical contact can be impaired. After successful connection: 1 Vsupply + 2 Vsupply - 3 Analog OUT +10 30 VDC max. 70 ma + 4 20 ma 4 Analog GND 15
Connection SSG Data Logger The 4 pin cable from the lightning protection box is connected with the data logger. Function Test To check if the snow scale is working an ampere meter has to be connected with the Vsupply + wiring. If it is ON approximately 70mA have to be displayed. Also an ampere meter is connected between Analog Out and Analog GND. The signal is between 4 20mA. If no weight is on the scale the output signal as to be 4mA. Connection with Data Logger 0 2V Signal Input If a data logger with only a 0 2V signal input is used, a shut resistor has to be connected between the signal output and the GND. 16
4.4. Assembly of the remaining plates 4x: Fix the plate, which is positioned above the assembly group measure cell to the 4 distance bolts. Use therefor the plastic washer and the cap nut The remaining plates are fixed with the M8 nuts (with 13 mm open wrench). Do not screw too tightly! Result: 17
4.5. Mounting the marking rods 4x: Preparation of the clips: a) Pull the clips over the marking rod b) Fold the upper lobe with a finger with caution, so that both holes are congruent c) Pull the clip from the marking rod again Do NOT fold the clips without a marking rod, because otherwise the appropriate form is not reached. 18
8x: Mount the formed clips at the corners of the snow scale with the M5x12 screws. Do not yet tighten the screws. 4x: Push the marking rods through the clips and tighten the screws of the clips. 5. Functional check The snow scale works similar to a bathroom scale. A person with e.g. 100 kg stands on the central single plate. However because the area of this plate is a little smaller than 1 m² (1.2 m 0.8 m = 0.96 m²) and the result is output in kg/m² (= mm SWE), the output value is in this case 104 mm SWE. 19
