Bellbird Tours Pty Ltd PO Box 2008, BERRI SA 5343 AUSTRALIA Ph. 1800-BIRDING Ph. +61409 763172 www.bellbirdtours.com info@bellbirdtours.com Comfortable Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour Slow-paced Quality lodgings Gourmet food We ll look after you 26 Jul 10 Aug 2019, Mt Isa to Mildura/Adelaide This is a slow-paced version of our flagship Nine Grasswren tour, one of Australia s epic birding adventures. We will look for nine of Australia s 13 Grasswren species: Striated, Short-tailed, Western, Thick-billed, Eyrean, Grey, Kalkadoon, Carpentarian and Rusty Grasswren. From the vast expanses of Mallee scrub in the Vic-SA border region to the Flinders Ranges we travel up the Birdsville track through the outback, visit the stark country around Boulia- Winton and finish in the ranges around Mt Isa. This trip is a real adventure (yet fully accommodated), taking it easy by adding an extra 4 days to the standard itinerary. Timed to travel through the heart of the outback during the late Australian winter season, a great time to go birding, we will have plenty of opportunity during these 16 days to see over 200 species, and besides the Grasswrens we have a good chance of sought-after birds like Red-lored Whistler, Banded and Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, Chestnut and Cinnamon Quail-thrush, Gibberbird, Yellow Chat, Inland Dotterel, Flock Bronzewing, Spinifex Pigeon, Painted Finch and even the enigmatic Grey Falcon. Accommodation will be of the highest available standard; the drives have been shortened; we ll take plenty of breaks; the food will be of the best available, and where we have to take a picnic lunch, it will be gourmet style. We have secured access to some new birding locations exclusively for this tour. The rewards will be some of Australia s most sought-after outback species, wonderful scenery and great camaraderie. This tour has a new itinerary, so read on below to whet your appetite! Tour starts: Mt Isa, Qld Finishes: Mildura, Vic or Adelaide, SA Scheduled departure & return dates: 26 July 10 Aug 2019 Questions? Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Tour details Tour starts: Mt Isa, Qld (serviced by direct flights from Melb, Bris & Syd) Finishes: Mildura, Vic (airport, serviced by direct flights from Adl, Melb & Syd) or land transfer to Adelaide, SA. Scheduled departure and return dates: Tour commences with dinner on 26 July 2019. Please arrive on or before 26 July. Tour finishes with breakfast on 10 Aug 2019. Please depart on or after 10 Aug. Itinerary contains further details. Leader: Peter Waanders and Steve Potter. Difficulty: Low/Medium/High/Excellent level of fitness required. This trip is slower paced than our regular Grasswren tours. Walking in uneven terrain will still be required to find the birds, but we have secured access to some new and exclusive (and easier) sites. There will be some early departures or late finishes. You can opt out of any challenging activitities if you like. While we will drive up to 4000 km (a lot on unsealed roads) this is spread out over 16 rather than 12 days. We can t control the weather but usually July/August is fine, sunny and cool to mild in the south to warmish in the north. We may encounter a frosty morning or an unseasonal rain downpour. What to bring: Please travel light. Binoculars, camera, mobile phone, chargers, power adaptors if you re an international guest, insect repellent, sunscreen, personal medications, sun hat, water bottle, hand sanitizer. Sturdy footwear recommended. Scopes, super-telephoto lenses with tripods, and very large heavy suitcases discouraged. Clothing: Lightweight long pants, t-shirt and long-sleeved shirt, over the top of which you can wear layers that can be taken off as necessary, including a warm jumper and a rain-proof jacket. Neat casual attire for dinners. Be prepared for the odd cool morning but gloriously sunny days. Group size: Minimum 4, maximum 9 participants. Cost: AU$8,349 per person including accommodation and all meals, based on double or twin-share occupancy. Single occupancy surcharge of $890. Not included: drinks, tips, personal expenses. Earlybird discount of $99 for bookings received up to 6 months before departure date. Return-client discount may apply.

ITINERARY Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Day 1: Fri 26 July 19. Make your own way to Mt Isa (Qld), serviced by direct flights on Qantas, Virgin and Rex from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Taxi (own cost) to hotel for dinner and introductions. Accommodation: Ibis Styles Verona, Mt Isa (en-suite rooms; meals: D). Day 2: Sat 27 July 19. We have a full day around Mt Isa, where we ll be searching for two Grasswren species: Kalkadoon and Carpentarian. Another drawcard here is Painted Finch which we ve seen on prior visits. We ll also spend time looking for other good species of the local area, including Spinifex Pigeon, Little Woodswallow, the Cloncurry race of Australian Ringneck, Spinifexbird and Grey-headed Honeyeater, Black-throated Treecreeper, Varied Lorikeet and many more. We ll also visit the sewage pond, with chance of Plumed Whistling Ducks and other waterfowl. Nearby at Lake Moondarra we have a good chance of Paperbark Flycatcher, Spotted Bowerbird, Plumed Whistling-duck, Painted Finch, Purple-necked Rock-wallaby and Freshwater Crocodile. Accommodation: Ibis Styles Verona, Mt Isa (en-suite rooms; meals: B, L, D). Day 3: Sun 28 July 19. The morning will be spent birding the local area, picking up any species we may have missed. After a leisurely lunch we drive south, birding our way to the township of Winton, Australia s dinosaur capital. Species we re likely to encounter today include Varied Lorikeet, Australian Bustard, Budgerigar, Brown and Rufous Songlark, Brolga, Black-tailed Nativehen, Plumed Whistling-duck and maybe even Ground Cuckoo-shrike. Accommodation: Boulder Opal Motel, Winton (en-suite motel rooms; meals: B, L, D). Day 4: Mon 29 July 19. Traversing the area where Night Parrot has been recorded recently, travelling on dark red gravel roads we notice more and more spinifex around us (with chances of Spinifexbird) until we arrive in the spinifex-covered plains around Lark Quarry. Here we search for Rusty Grasswren (former rowleyi ssp of Striated). Other species we may come across include Grey Falcon, Rufous-crowned Emu-wren, Hall s Babbler, Chestnut-breasted Quailthrush, Spinifexbird, White-browed, Dusky and Masked Woodswallow, Spinifex Pigeon, Grey-headed and Grey-fronted Honeyeater. We ll take lunch in the Dinosaur Trackways visitor centre, situated high up on a rugged jump-up plateau with spectacular views over the surrounding plains, while Spinifex Pigeons scurry around the surrounding undergrowth. Time permitting, there is the option for people to visit the dinosaur stampede fossils here this afternoon (own cost). Accommodation: Boulder Opal Motel, Winton (en-suite motel rooms; meals: B, L, D). Thick-billed Grasswren, Australian Pratincole, Birding, Black-breasted Buzzard, Wet outback conditions

Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Day 5: Tue 30 July 19. We ll take a leisurely breakfast and check out the local waterhole for drinking parrots and finches, and any other key species we may have missed yesterday. We then travel on outback roads to the isolated township of Boulia, located in the heart of outback Queensland, with further chances of Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush and along the way hopefully picking up Brolga, Australian Bustard and Inland Dotterel. Around sunset, we will have sundowners at a grassy plain outside Boulia to check for Flock Bronzewings coming in to drink. Accommodation: Boulia Sands Motel (ensuite motel rooms; meals included: B, L, D). Day 6: Wed 31 July 19. We bird our way to Birdsville, checking local wetlands and sand dunes for species like Budgerigar, Cockatiel, Australian Bush-lark, Brolga, Bourke s Parrot and Ground Cuckoo-shrike, while we still have a chance of Flock Bronzewing and perhaps Letter-winged Kite. We also have our first chance of Grey Grasswren here. We ll have a meal at the famous Birdsville Pub tonight before retiring to our accommodation in new ensuite cabins at the Birdsville Caravan Park (private en-suite cabins; meals included: B, L, D). Day 7: Thu 1 Aug 19. Breakfast at the rustic bakery near the local lagoon at Birdsville, where we will bird afterwards, and where apart from many waterbirds, Red-browed Pardalote is often found. We ll then set off onto the famous Birdsville track. Our first birding stop is at a bore drain where the target is the very rare and localised Yellow Chat. Other species we ve encountered here are Australian Pratincole and Flock Bronzewing. Next we ll arrive at a (sometimes dry) swamp where the constant chatter of bird calls provides a background chorus to our search for Grey Grasswren which prefers the dense lignum shrubs in the foreground. We have further chances of Letter-winged Kites (they don t nest each year) and a good chance of Grey Falcon. Accommodation: Mungerannie Pub (a charming, rustic outback pub with basic but clean rooms and shared bathroom facilities; meals: B, L, D). Day 8: Fri 2 Aug 19. We ll check for Grey Falcon at first light and may see Flock Bronzewings heading for their early morning drink. Neighbouring Cowarie Station has resident Eyrean Grasswrens in the scenic sand dunes while along the Warburton River we often come across Red-browed Pardalote and Banded Whiteface. Crimson and Orange Chats are usually present too and on the gibber-strewn plains we look for Gibberbird. After lunch at Mungerannie we continue driving the Birdsville track until we reach the township of Marree at the end of the day. Accommodation: Marree Hotel (a historical outback hotel with modern en-suite rooms and facilities; meals included: B, L, D). Letter-winged Kite, Flock Bronzewing, Gibberbird, Western Grasswren

Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Day 9: Sat 3 Aug 19. We ll explore various birding sites around Marree this morning, looking for Budgerigar, Red-backed Kingfisher, Rufous Fieldwren, Chirruping Wedgebill and a chance of Inland Dotterel. An artesian bore overflow has created a nice wetland which usually holds Brolga and a raft of water-birds, including crakes in amidst desert-like scenery. Most years, Black-breasted Buzzard and Little Eagle breed here. After a coffee break back at Marree we pack up and head a short distance south, to Lyndhurst, for lunch and check-in at our accommodation. The afternoon is spent birding the lower reaches of the Strzelecki track, which traverses endless open stony plains interspersed with mostly dry watercourses. Overnight: Lyndhurst Hotel (a typical outback pub with new, private ensuite cabins; meals included: B, L, D). Day 10: Sun 4 Aug 19. We depart around sunrise for a visit to Mt Lyndhurst Station on the edge of the Strzelecki desert, where we ll search for the very rare Chestnut-breasted Whiteface, an SA endemic (very few sightings since 2016), as well as Cinnamon Quail-thrush, Chirruping Wedgebill, White-backed Swallow and Rufous Fieldwren. We stand a chance of finding our sixth species of Grasswren here, the Thick-billed. Afterwards we ll continue exploring the Strzelecki track for some time, with good chances of Gibberbird, Inland Dotterel and Black-breasted Buzzard. Returning to Lyndhurst, we ll have sundowners at the old airstrip, marveling at the vastness of the landscape, the clarity of the sky while the sun sets and Inland Dotterels come out to forage. Overnight: Lyndhurst Hotel (a typical outback pub with new, private en-suite cabins; meals included: B, L, D). Day 11: Mon 5 Aug 19. After a leisurely breakfast we have a look at the local dam which often holds Freckled Duck, Pink-eared Duck, Black-tailed Native-hen, Australian Spotted Crake and White-backed Swallow. We ll pack up and head south, to the Flinders Ranges, an impressive range of soaring rock formations on the edge of the outback. This area of scenic beauty is home to the elusive Short-tailed Grasswren. We ll look for them on the spinifex-grass covered hill slopes and there ll be plenty of Red, Western Grey and Euro Kangaroos to see. In the afternoon we travel along creek-beds and through narrow gorges cut deeply into geological layers that date back 800 million years. Here we look for Chirruping Wedgebill, Elegant Parrot, Grey fronted Honeyeater and the rare Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby. We ll stay in Port Augusta, at the crossroads of outback Australia, where some of the best food of the trip awaits us. Accommodation: Port Augusta Standpipe Motel (ensuite motel rooms; meals included: B, L, D). Striated, Grey, Short-tailed Grasswren, Australian Bustard

Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Day 12: Tue 6 Aug 19. The morning is a back-up for Short-tailed Grasswren or any other local species, before we head off in search of yet another new Grasswren. Inhabiting Bluebush plains between Port Augusta and Whyalla, the Western Grasswren (formerly the myall race of Thick-billed) will be the focus of the day. Other birds we are likely to come across are the turquoise race of Splendid Fairy-wren, Black-eared Cuckoo and Redthroat, as well as Blue Bonnet, Chirruping Wedgebill and Rufous Fieldwren. Banded Stilts are often in a nearby coastal lake. We ll visit the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens during the afternoon, where an array of flowering native plants and shrubs attract a variety of birds including up to 5 species of Honeyeater, Mulga Parrot, Chirruping Wedgebill and Redthroat. The trees around the golf course usually have Purplecrowned Lorikeets. Accommodation: Port Augusta Standpipe Motel (en-suite rooms; meals included: B, L, D). Day 13: Wed 7 Aug 19. The morning is a back-up for any other local species we may still need before we head south, looking for Slender-billed Thornbill and Adelaide Rosella along the coast. Then we head inland until we reach Australia s largest river: the Murray. Lined with gnarly old Red Gum trees, the wetlands and floodplains along the river harbor a plethora of waterbirds such as ducks, herons, cormorants, rails, crakes and these often include soughtafter species: Freckled Duck, Spotless Crake and Regent Parrot would be the highlight of the day. In the afternoon we ll explore the southernmost parts of one of Australia s largest wilderness areas, over 1,000,000 ha of mallee eucalypt scrub of the Bookmark Biosphere - a conglomeration of nature reserves and pastoral properties. Here we have a chance of Red-lored Whistler and the endemic and endangered Black-eared Miner. We ll stay at Berri on the banks of the Murray river. Accommodation: Berri Resort Hotel (en-suite rooms, meals included: B, L, D). Day 14: Thu 8 Aug 19. We ll go for a stroll in the local area looking for Shy Heathwren, Redthroat, Striped Honeyeater, Splendid Fairy-wren, Southern Scrubrobin and White-browed Treecreeper and then continue traversing this vast wilderness by vehicle, where Western Grey and Red Kangaroos hop around in the very few clearings. We ll have lunch at the confluence of the Murray and Darling rivers and bird the adjacent wetlands, teeming with waterbirds, including chances of Freckled Duck and Regent Parrot. Accommodation: Commodore Inn, Mildura (en-suite rooms; meals included: B, L, D). Day 15: Fri 9 Aug 19. We ll end the tour on a high with our last Grasswren: the Striated, in the spinifex-mallee near Hattah, just south of Mildura, a beautiful and well-protected area of undisturbed mallee scrub. Spinnifex Pigeon, Grey Falcon, Inland Dotterel, Red Kangaroo

Nine Grasswren 16-day birding tour 2019 Other good birds possible in this area include Mallee Emu-wren, Chestnut Quail-thrush, Southern Scrubrobin, Shy Heathwren, White-browed Tree-creeper, and if we re lucky, Regent Parrot and Major Mitchell s Cockatoo. Later in the afternoon we reluctantly depart the reserve to head back to our accommodation for our final dinner and bird checklist. Accommodation: Commodore Inn, Mildura (ensuite rooms; meals included: D). Day 16: Sat 10 Aug 19.
