Introduction 3 The ukulele is a fantastic instrument to facilitate good music making at Key Stage 2. It is small, versatile, cheap to purchase, and offers a brilliant starting point for students musical development. Above all, it is fun and easy to play, allowing all students to be involved in an ensemble regardless of any barriers to learning. MusicPlus Digital (MPD) allows children to learn the ukulele in a fun exciting way, allowing more children to learn, whilst addressing and complementing all aspects of the national curriculum Key Stage 2 programme of study. After one year of learning with MPD, most Key Stage 2 children will be able to: 1. Play at least 4 chords and accompany instrumental and vocal performances 2. Sing with confidence 3. Read and interpret basic rhythmic and pitch notations, e.g. TAB & rhythm mnemonics 4. Understand and use appropriate musical vocabulary including the inter-related dimensions (pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure) 5. Compose original compositions both individually and in groups 6. Perform confidently in front of a range of audiences 7. Recognise a variety of musical styles and genres through listening.
Tuning 4 The ukulele is tuned as follows: G C E A With practise, 30 ukuleles can be tuned in about 5 minutes. Don't get too worried about this - the instruments can go out of tune pretty easily so as long as they are roughly in tune, the children can still have a great time learning! Tuning tips: It s better to carry on with a than stop every few minutes to re-tune If the instruments are brand new, the strings will need to be stretched before they are tuned. This involves pulling the strings towards you and sliding your finger the full length of the strings to take out the slack If you don t have time before the, get the children to sing the Green Caterpillar song with the backing track as you go around and tune each ukulele
MusicPlus Digital Checklist Check: 5 Is your teaching space ready? All the students should be able to see you and any displays (e.g. in a circle, semi-circle or curved rows etc.). There should be no tables or chairs in the way of the children playing. Are all of your resources ready before the students arrive? Ideally the ukuleles will be tuned and out ready to play. Make sure the computer and whiteboard is working and that you re logged into MPD! Do you know and use the students names? Greet your students and target them to answer questions; having a seating plan or name tags can make this easier. Avoid too much talking, but get as much music and singing in there as possible. In the recap s, start with musical activity as soon as possible and make music the target language throughout the by avoiding too much talk. Demonstrate and musically model everything you want students to do. Are you using simple and consistent behaviour management and teaching strategies? For instance, establish a signal to stop playing, and count into songs at the correct speed to allow students to start playing together and in time with each other. Are all of your students getting involved? Get to know your students individual needs and strengths and use appropriate strategies to support and challenge them. Are the students making independent musical decisions? Encourage the children to make musical choices by asking them open questions and giving them the opportunity to engage in creative activities such as improvising. Do the children know what they have learnt in that? Ensure that your students are clear about what they have learnt and that you keep a record of what has been achieved in the. This is useful for the teachers to know in future s, and also great for the children to go away and practise!
How to use MusicPlus Digital There are a variety of ways to use MPD and the different methods are outlined in the MPD Overview document downloadable from www.musicplusdigital.com. The MPD ukulele programme is designed to cover 30 weeks of learning. In brief, some schools will use what is called The Alternate Week Method, which involves a specialist music teacher and class teacher delivering alternative digital and teacher led s. Other schools may simply use MPD as a stand-alone resource week by week with one teacher delivering. 6 The plans are split into two colours for ease of use: Green for digital s: Blue for teacher-led recap s: MPD has been designed so that each digital is then recapped the following week using a combination of videos, backing tracks and scores from the resource. These are downloadable from the 'Resources' and 'Teacher' areas of www.musicplusdigital.com. For extra practice and performance, backing tracks for all the songs are available to stream at www.musicplusdigital.com/resources All the scores are available to download from the Teacher area once you are logged into the site.
