McCUTCHEN FAMILY PAPERS--ADDITION 1746-1973 Processed By: Margaret Willis Archives & Manuscript Unit Technical Services Section Date Completed: 4/15/97 Accession Numbers: 94-168; 94-169 Location: XI-E-1-3 Microfilm Accession Number: 1535

INTRODUCTION The McCutchen Family Papers--Addition, 1746-1973, were a gift of Hildegard Smith, of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Harmon L. Ross, of Camden, Arkansas. Ms. Smith, who taught music in Little Rock, was a resourceful and determined researcher into the history of the McCutchen family. She published 2 volumes of family history titled, The McCutchen Trace, dedicated to her mother, Mary Elizabeth McCutchen Smith, as well as to her grandfather, William Henry McCutchen, who, she said, first inspired in her a love and appreciation for her ancestors. Ms. Smith s research resulted in a large collection of correspondence and other material. There are no restrictions on the material. Single copies may be made for individual researcher use. For published materials, permission to publish must be obtained from the copyright holder, and any potential infrignement of copyright is the responsibility of the user.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The McCutchen Family Papers--Addition, 1746-1973, contain approximately 1500 items in thirteen boxes that include accounts, correspondence, genealogical material, invitations, 2 poetry albums, and a copy of The McCutchen Trace, Volume 2, as well as other related material. The material is filed by category except for the poetry albums and volume 2 of The McCutchen Trace. These are filed at the end of the collection due to their size. Newspaper clippings have been photocopied, but the originals have been retained, since, in some instances, the original clipping is easier to read than then the photocopy. Also retained are empty envelopes, which may be of some help to the researcher. These are filed at the end of the correspondence files. The correspondence files are separated into letters with a McCutchen signature and those with other than a McCutchen signature. The former are filed alphabetically by first name; the latter are filed alphabetically by last name. There is also a folder of letters signed by Hildegard Smith and these can be found at the end of the correspondence file. Additionally, there is a folder for loose pages of letters that could not be matched to any of the signed correspondence. There is also a folder for letters dated 1832 to 1861 that have been copied from the originals. These can be found under Genealogical Data...McCutchen, Box 8. The bulk of the collection consists of genealogical data. These materials consist of letters, genealogical forms, hand-drawn family charts, and a few copied Civil War letters. That part of the genealogical data relating mainly to McCutchen, has been divided into 2 sections- Genealogical Data...McCutchen, boxes 7 and 8. Additionally, there is also genealogical material in McCutchen...Miscellaneous folders in Box 9.
