HWI-01 HOT WIRE IGNITION TESTER IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS - - SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Introduction Thank you for choosing the ED&D Model HWI-01 Hot Wire Ignition Tester. With proper use, care, and regular calibration, it will provide many years of accurate and reliable service. Upon receiving the unit please check for obvious physical damage to the packaging material and the instrument itself. If any damage is evident please immediately notify your ED&D representative. We strongly recommend you keep all ED&D packaging for future shipping requirements. DANGER WARNING: THIS TEST INVOLVES AN EXPOSED LIVE WIRE THIS WIRE IS ENERGIZED AND EXTREMELY HOT. DO NOT TOUCH THE WIRE DURING TESTING. DISCONNECT POWER AND ALLOW SUFFICIENT COOLING TIME BEFORE TOUCHING THE WIRE BEFORE USING: 1) Use proper safety precautions when conducting this test proper protection of the power source output & exposed test wire, wear safety glasses, clean work area with no combustible materials in the area, etc. It is your responsibility to insure a safe test environment. 2) You should provide proper ventilation of the fumes from the burning plastic use an ED&D Fume Test Hood or other suitable flame test hood. ASSEMBLY: Your Hot Wire Ignition Tester includes: 25 ft. spool of Nichrome wire with resistance of 5.28 Ω/m Wire connectors for attaching/energizing the test wire Terminals for connecting to the power source (not included) Supports for sample positioning 70 mm and 110 mm width positions SPECIFICATIONS: Support Height Wire Connection Width Wire Connection Height Wire 60.0 mm 31.5 mm 61.5 mm Nichrome (80% Ni, 20% Cr), 5.28 Ω/m 2
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Set the support posts at the distance specified by your test standard (70 mm or 110 mm). 2) Wrap the test wire around the test sample using care to end the windings at the connector width (31.5 mm). 3) Place the sample on the support posts. 4) Secure the test wire to the wire connectors each end of the test wire should be placed in the V groove on top of the connector plate see photo below. NOTE the connector screw has been machined to specifically hold the small diameter test wire. DO NOT over-tighten the wire connectors! 5) Connect your power source to the terminals. 6) Adjust your power source as specified by your test standard. WARNING do not touch the test wire with the power source connected = possible shock and burn hazards! Supports can be moved between the 70 mm or 110 mm separation settings DISASSEMBLY/SERVICE: The Sample support posts can unscrew from the base for changing between the 70 mm and 110 mm separation distance. The wire connectors have been specially machined to reliably secure the small diameter test wire. Do not disassemble the wire connectors. Contact ED&D for test wire ED&D part number HWI-01W CALIBRATION: The post height, post separation distance, wire terminal height, and wire terminal width should be calibrated annually. Return to ED&D for calibration call for RMA number before returning for calibration. Only calibrated Hot Wire Ignition Test Wire should be used = 5.28 Ω/m ±.25 Ω/m (ED&D p/n HWI-01W). REFERENCE STANDARDS: This product complies with IEC60695-2-20, EN60695-2-20, IEC60950, EN60950, UL60950, CSA22.2 No. 60950, UL746 and all IEC, EN, UL, CSA and other standards with the specifications shown on page 2. 4
LIMITED WARRANTY Educated Design & Development, Inc. ( ED&D ) hereby warrants to the original purchaser of any new ED&D Hot Wire Ignition Tester that the device shall be free from defect in material and/or workmanship. This warranty shall extend for a period of Ninety (90) days from the date of purchase. Should any defect arise within the warranty period, ED&D may replace the defective unit with a new unit. Under no circumstances, however, shall ED&D be required to refund the purchase price of any Hot Wire Ignition Tester. This warranty does not cover any failure or damage to the product resulting from accident, alteration or misuse of the product or failure to follow manufacturer s operating instructions. Furthermore, this warranty does not cover damage caused by use of any attachment not original equipment of the product. ED&D shall not be liable for any damage caused by use of the product other than indicated in the manufacturer s instructions. ED&D DISCLAIMS ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES RESULTING FROM DELAY OR LOSS OF USE AND SERVICE, OR REPAIR, OR FOR LOSS OR DAMAGED DEVICES, OR FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL NEGLIGENCE OR OTHER FAULT ON THE PART OF THE MANUFACTURER OR OTHERS. THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES ON THIS PRODUCT SHALL BE IN EFFECT ONLY FOR THE DURATION OF THE EXPRESSED WARRANTY PERIOD AS SET FORTH ABOVE, AND THEREAFTER, THERE SHALL BE NO WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE ON ED&D HOT WIRE IGNITION TESTER.
