t EIT Digital Health and Wellbeing @ HLS Conference November 17, 2015 Jean H.A. Gelissen, Eindhoven, November 2015

Tackling the European paradox EU member states play a leading global role in top-level scientific output, but lag behind in the ability of converting this strength into wealth-generating innovations. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) was established for promoting innovation in Europe, setting its focus on bringing research results to market.

EIT Community Empower innovators and entrepreneurs across Europe to live up to their potential, grab opportunities, achieve/contribute to societal challenges and bring about societal benefits. 2010 2014 2016

About EIT Digital EIT Digital is a leading European open innovation organisation. We drive digital innovation, education and entrepreneurship for economic growth and quality of life. We bring together top European corporations, SMEs, start-ups, universities and research institutes with an entrepreneurial mindset. We invest in strategic areas to accelerate the market uptake of researchbased digital technologies and to bring entrepreneurial talent and leadership to Europe. We organise our innovation and education activities in and around our colocation centres, where students, researchers, engineers, business developers and entrepreneurs come together to drive the digitalisation of society.

Health and Wellbeing Prevention through the Quantified Self Reduce the demand for expensive healthcare by detecting small physical and mental health issues early and avoiding larger health problems by suitable lifestyle interventions allow people to participate to the labour process for two more years and to live independent on higher age for two more years (EU2020 goal)

Example: Fit to Perform (2015 2016) References: https://goo.gl/1lnrht and https://goo.gl/wik18w Video: https://goo.gl/k0tz8w 9

Fit to Perform in a nutshell. EIT Digital High Impact Initiative Fit to Perform Objective Deliver the tachograph of tomorrow, making professional driving safer, healthier and more efficient. Approach Bring the vital body signs 1 of the driver into the fleet management systems, next to the vehicle operation data 2 and the operating environment data 3, to close the loop. Create a triple win: Impact increased road safety for the society improved quality of life for the driver improved profit margin for the transportation sector 1 activity, stress, sleep, 2 acceleration, breaking, steering, 3 weather condition, traffic density, traffic jam, 10

Midterm status Clear relation found linking physiological features and driving behaviour (Go / NoGo milestone / decision) Co-creation (integration, testing & validation) with industry partners: fleet management systems providers, fleet owners and truckers 2 concrete business model applications that integrate the unique value proposition Extension to existing telematics solutions for primary and aftersales markets Addition to occupational health policies 11

Potential social/economic impact of the outcome Reduction of accidents (and related people killed / injured and economical damage) Improved drivers health Reduced pollution Reduction of Total Cost of Ownership in tight margin industry (fuel consumption, absenteeism) Change the established way of working in a traditional industry Change working time legislation to better suit the 24 hour economy; real-time break planning, customised working hours, route adjustment 12

Successful pre-commercialisation stage Industry expressing a real need for the F2P product/service Business feedback confirms the unique value proposition Continuous feedback from end user (managers, planners, drivers) helped to improve the product offering Positive insights and feedback gained at major industry events: IFA 2015 Berlin IAA 2015 Frankfurt POST Expo 2015 Paris F2P will be the tachograph of tomorrow, replacing not only the current technology in place, but also the legislation controlling driving hours 13

Three take aways. (1) EIT Digital support / funding criteria: Fit with the SIA priority areas From the Strategic Innovation Agenda: Open up the market of active healthy ageing by providing affordable unobtrusive ICT-enabled cognitive, physical and social (avoiding social isolation / exclusion) wellbeing services. Focus on common or consumer-level devices for two priorities areas with a maximum societal and economic impact. Priority 1: Early detection and treatment of physical anomalies with a focus on cardio-vascular related diseases (physical wellbeing) Priority 2: Early detection and treatment of cognitive deterioration with a focus on stress (burnout) and dementia (cognitive wellbeing) Based on proven / validated (research) prototypes Clear route2market in a one to two years timeframe

Three take aways. (2) (E-) coaching in the context of primary prevention: Primary prevention: selling a solution for a not (yet) existing problem Impact of overweight, stress, sleep quality, low activity level at later age Risk of developing cognitive diseases like dementia Needs to provide incentives to persuade to subscribe and stay in the program, e.g. gamification, competition, joined challenge Needs endorsement (and potential financial support) from government, insurance, employer / occupational health company

Three take aways. (3) (E-) coaching feasible w.r.t. time2market / technology maturity: Use proven / validated technology (piggyback on the Quantified Self Movement) Martket introduction procces (maturity and acceptance level driven) First introduce in Business2Business markets (corporate programs), Next Business2Bbusiness2Consumer markets (insurance and occupational health companies) and Finally Business2Consumer markets (individuals)
